Need help buying mizuno clubs

Hi everyone, I'm new to golf been playing for about 3 months and am constantly scoring about 89-93.. Right now I'm using taylormade r9 TP irons with dynamic gold s300 shafts.. But the irons I'm using are really worn out as I bought them used.. Now I'm in the market for new irons and would like to buy the mizuno mp 53 irons.. I wanna know would it be harder to play with? And would I be making the step up in quality, feel, forgiveness etc in getting the mizuno mp 53's? Please give me some suggestions thx for you help..

Wow, you wore out a set of r9's; I'm thinking you are just tired of them cuz it takes a long time to wear out a set of irons. Anyway, in my mind you shouldn't have any problems moving to the Mizuno's and you will probably like the feel a whole lot better. As for foregiveness, that what you get when you go to church.

Here in the UK Mizuno provide a free fitting service with no purchase requirements. If there's something similar near you that would allow you to try out the MP53's with S300 shafts and see how you get on. For reference the DNA fitting process I had for my MP59's was:

Haha.. I didn't wear them out.. I bought them used so I guess the previous owner didn't take good care of them, and I didn't know much about golf at the time of buying.. But I can't choose between the mp 53 or the jpx 800 pro.. I just want the clubs that still offers me the same forgiveness as my r9 tour preferred but with better feel

Get fitted so that your clubs match your body size, arm length, etc. As a new golfer, that non-swinging fitting is really important. You're a good enough player (based on breaking 90 in first three months) that you will adjust your swing to the fit of your clubs. You'll have better long-term results if you fit your clubs to the good swing you hope to have. Use the DNA swing thing from Mizuno to help choose the right shafts.

Mizuno's are .25" shorter than you R9's when both are standard length. Mizuno's also can be flatter than others. Not sure about the R9's lies. Lofts are about the same. Give the JPX800 Pro's a hard look. Really great clubs and a little more forgiving than the MP 53's according to the reviews.

I started playing the Pro's last season and love them. I picked up a set of MP 53's but have only hit them indoors. I expect the MP 53's will be my mid-sumer form clubs that I play when I'm hitting the ball really well and I'm breaking 80 most rounds.

You'll find lots of great reviews and threads here about both the MP53's, the JPX800 Pro's and even the MP59's. All are worth the reads.

Definitely get fitted before you buy.  You wouldn't marry a woman site unseen would you?

Sounds like a great place to be in - purchasing some new Mizzuno irons!

Before I bought my mp58's I hit the 800's and liked them. They feel good, sound good, and provide a little more forgiveness than the mp series. My friend who plays to a 1 handicap bought a set and loves them.

The reason I got the 58's is I found a set that was 1" longer (cause I am taller) and 2 degrees upright online that were slightly used by a guy who couldn't hit them. Got them for an amazing price - half of retail - setup to my specifications. Otherwise, the 800's may have ended up in my bag.

If youre a 20 handicap, Id definetly go with the 800 Pros over the 53s.  With any Mizuno MP iron, you need to have a pretty good swing to get the most of out them.  Honestly, you might even want to consider the regular JPX-800s.  They arent forged (which may or may not be all that big of a deal to you) but they are made more for a mid handicapper such as yourself.

Yes I would agree the JPX 800 pro's or JPX 800's would be a great choice.  Mizuno does a great job with the fitting process, match your swing speed for the right shaft.

Go buy some Mizzy's and join the family! :D

But honestly, do the DNA fitting like others have said.  Even if you don't buy from that particular retailer/fitter...  The fittings are free and give you a lot of insight into the Mizzy family of clubs.  The MP-53's are seriously sweet.  I was this close [----] to buying them... But went with the MP-59's due to the titanium insert for increased forgiveness and sweet spot.

Same as me. I hit the MP-53 a smidge better in the fitting but it really was a nominal amount; either club was more than suitable for me.

The only argument for going 53 instead of 59 was that the fitter said the 53 was a little more forgiving on bad shots. From my perspective though the MP-59 looked better at address, felt like I could work it a little better and is by far the best looking club I think I've seen. I'd say I was [------] close to buying them.

I'd underscore the fitting; it is very important. Since I come from the school that says that your reach should exceed your grab, I'd suggest getting a set of clubs you will grow into b/c they will make and/or keep your swing good. Once you have a golf swing you can pretty much play any club you like. So after that its just a matter of finding what you like.

Thank you you all for all the great and helpful reply's.. I just got fitted today but not at the mizzy shop, they are closed for a week so I went to the epon shop and got fitted.. Apparently my lie angle is off by 4 degrees which made me have to bend over more at address.. Also my shaft on the r9's are dynamic gold s300 at 120 grams which according to my swing speed are 1 step too stiff, they recommend the r300.. But I kinda like the s300.. Tried the epon irons the 700 and 500 series and felt quite good but I'm still leaning towards the mizunos..

Ps. I think I'm gonna try the jpx 800 pro like you guys said.. And also will try the epons as well..

You should try the regular JPX 800s as well.

Hi guys I tried the mp 53 and 59 and also the jpx and the jpx pro.. I felt the mp 59's to be easiest to hit and felt really tight and good with it.. I just want to know what u guys think of the epon irons?? I heard some ppl said it is the cream of the crop irons in the market.. And it doesn't get better than the epon's as far as irons are concerned.. I just wanna make sure which irons to get.. Either the mizunos or the epon's.. Both are fitted to your liking and also around same price.. I want to get my irons and will not buy again for a big while so I don't wanna hurry in to make a decision.. Thanks in advance

Both are great irons.  If the price is similar and you like the Epons better, I say go for it.  As with all of the other Japanese forgings such as Miura, Endo, etc; a lot of the time you will pay more because you are paying for a name and a brand of irons that is somewhat rare.

IMO, the performance and the quality is the same with all of them.

      Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.

      Right. The difference between being 120 out and 70 out for me (this is the important part) is negligible and not worth putting other risks into play off the tee.   Ok the argument against driver is that my shot cone is comically large. It puts every possible outcome into play. You can't see the green from the tee so there's a good chance I'd have to wait for it to clear which would slow down play. That's the third tee right in the middle of the firing range there. I really don't want to wait just to hit a terrible shot and I especially don't want to injure somebody. Yea I have no problem playing out of the rough short of the bunker if I'm just going to lay up short of the bunker, but I absolutely need to avoid flaring it right into the penalty area if I'm going to be laying up in the first place. As a general strategy I understand where you're coming from. But since we're specifically talking about me (this is a shot I'm going to have to hit on Saturday), I think the cost is fairly marginal. I hit the ball 8' closer on average from 50-100 than I do from 100-150 from the fairway and rough and the green success % difference is 4%. Bunker might as well be a penalty drop. Based on the data,  Here's my SG:A data compared to a 10: I honestly don't know how to use SG for decision making. That's why I was mostly looking at proximity to hole and green success rate for comparison. I mostly use SG as a way to track my progress. All good. Like I said, I appreciate the discussion. It makes me think. If I didn't want to see alternative/opposing viewpoints to my own I just wouldn't post anything. You should post it! In your own swing thread, of course. It's been a fun exercise.

      Played my first 2024 round at Pierce Lake. Boomed my first drive down #10 fairway, then slowly slipped into mediocrity. 83 (69.6/131). The high point was going 2 of 4 on sand saves. My sand game is pretty marginal but today I must have discovered the secret for a couple hours.
