Watching the tournament last weekend, I saw that Jim Furyk had a new sponsor on his shirt and cap - 5 Hour Energy shots.  Does anyone besides me find this troubling?  This product is essentially an unregulated drug that is abused widely by high schoolers, ravers, and truck drivers.  Hardly the image I would think the PGA Tour wants to promote.

I can't believe people even buy stuff like that. It's basically a caffeine pill dissolved in a tiny bottle of juice. You can get a box full of caffeine pills for the price of one of those little bottles. Disappointed in Furyk, in case he cares.

Glad I wasn't the only one thinking this.  His herky-jerky swing kind of fits the product though, don't you think?

Although his performance on the playoff hole would suggest that the 5 hour energy had just worn off!

It may seem tacky, but I really do not have a problem with it - it's legal and teenagers abuse anything they can. Most are probably not going to start drinking 5 hour just because they are a sponsor.

Calling it an unregulated drug is a bit strong. Energy drinks are about the only growing segment of the non-alcoholic drink industry - a problem that could easily be solved if anyone sold a good cup of coffee anymore.

I think it's a bit desperate on his part to take on such a product, but in reality it's no worse than Redbull or Starbucks.  Every NFL game is sponsored by Budweiser and Coors so hard to be too critical of Furyk.

Yup. You could even say it's better than Red Bull because it has no sugar.

It's just a heavy dose of B vitamins. I myself can't golf well when I'm too amped on caffeine, sugar, or whatever else. This just isn't a product I associate with golf.

What troubles me the most is how bad the logo on the hat looks

Yeah, that was my take on it.  I don't care for the product, but I don't really feel like PGA Tour shirt logos impact my decision making that much.  Although I've had this inexplicable urge to timeshare a jet lately....

I just can't believe anyone would drink a 5 hour energy drink before they play golf...let alone Jim Furyk.  I seriously doubt he actually drinks that stuff.  I can't even play golf after drinking two cups of coffee let alone drinking crack in a bottle.  You want to have feel...be calm and relaxed.   You don't want to feel like you are going to jump out of your skin while standing over a five footer to win a tournament.

Well, if you see him blow a three footer 30 feet by, off the green and into a bunker, you will know why!

I'm pretty immune to caffeine at this point in my life, but even still I tend to avoid it playing golf.

When I was playing rec ice hockey I'd drink half (our games were anywhere between 6 and 10 at night, so a full one would keep me up until 3 or so) a 5 Hour Energy. Provided a little kick for more sustained energy during the games.

And the ingredients aren't that bad for you, c'mon.

I'm sorry but you sound ridiculous. What do you want to do, ban 5 hour energy? Its freaking caffeine, maybe some taurine or something else. No, ravers do not ABUSE 5 hour energy. You cannot stay up until 6 am off caffeine. They are using cocaine, speed, and ecstasy to stay up all night.

Sounds like you want the ultimate nanny state...

If anyone is stupid enough to start drinking 5 Hour Energy just because some golfer endorses it, well, shame on you.

    • I’ve recently started KBs too and really enjoy it. I have one day of armour building complex and one day of a mobility routine. Adding in a speed training day too.    which routines do you do @Elmer
    • Again, I’m not an expert so take it with a grain of salt My question is whether laying back even further becomes too conservative and that strategy is suboptimal as a result? Essentially what’s the cost of guaranteed longer second shot vs the x% risk for hitting the bunker? I think the optimal way to answer the question is looking at strokes gained, in consideration of the hazards and penalties, and picking the strategy that maximizes SG off the tee. I’ve seen some apps that do this but I’m not sure how accurate they are.   And again, asking all this so I can learn what I should be doing in these situations rather than questioning your approach Bill. I would give an example of the course I’m joining this year where I plan to aim at the bunker, but I don’t want to take over your swing thread any further!
    • What @DeadMan said. From the satellite it looks like there's tall grass to the right, long of the fairway post-dog-leg. But left it just looks like regular rough all the way to the neighboring tee boxes. If that's true I'm aiming left edge of the green and bombs away every time, hoping for a 30-70 yard up and down opportunity.
    • What's the case against blasting a driver at the green? I'm guessing it puts the penalty area/fescue too much into play, but if that's just standard rough around the green, there would be a good case for it. If it's not driver, then I agree with your approach. The one thing I would add is to shade your aim towards the bunkers vs. center of the fairway. Hitting out of a bunker is (marginally) better than a penalty drop.
    • Yes, if you are gonna layup, then layup. No need to nickle and dime a few extra yards and bring bunker back into play.
