Don't pass up the Lansing area. Timber Ridge in East Lansing is an excellent course and the new Eagle Eye also in East Lansing is a championship quality links course. In the area also is Hawk Hollow, Michigan State University's Forest Acres (east & west cousres), Eldorado, Lansing muni Groesbeck, College Fields, etc.

Hawk Hollow is an outstanding course. I played in a scrable there for the Lansing Convention and Visitors Beaurau a few years back and it was great. There is a great little par 3 with what is almost an island green.

As I'm sure you know, Eagle Eye across the street has the replica of the 17th at Sawgrass. Quite a hole.

I have never played that one, but it just jumped higher on my list.

Copper Hills is a great course... and a tough test (make it a day and play all 27).

Jeep... have a good time at Garland, it's not my favorite "up-north" resort, but it is definately a unique one and has some decent golf at good prices.

Thanks. I played there last year and had a great time, but that was as much due to the group of guys I'm playing with as to the courses I'm playing. I am looking forward to playing Fountains this year. Last year it poured rain on our last day and we missed out.

P.S. Three more days till I am done working at my current job and 4 days till I leave for Garland. But who's counting.

It is a good course but you'll make it a day without playing 27. Last month it took me 6 hours and 15 minutes to play 18 at Copper Hills. It was the longest round of my life and I never saw a marshall once. Beware!

That's terrible.... I've only played there 5-6 times and mostly during weekdays, but I've never had a problem. I think anything over 5 is worthy of a refund or at the very least a sincere apology and some coupons or passes.

Did you say anything to the head pro or manager?

Arcadia Bluffs is in my opinion and many of the people I play with share in this, that Arcadia Bluffs is every bit as nice as Oakland Hills. Having never played Oakland Hills I couldn't say this for sure, but Arcadia Bluffs was incredible http://arcadiabluffs.com/

I have never played Arcadia Bluffs, but I will try to this Fall. Everything I hear is that it is absolutely awesome. I have played both Oakland Hills South and North. The North Course is every bit as nice as it's famous sibling. The big difference is that when you are playing the South, you can actually see where the greats of the game have played.

arcadia bluffs is the best course in michigan period ... i've played all over the state for the last 20 years .. and i was just blown away when i was there.

shepherd's hollow is nice as well .. very scenic .. i didn't like the greens very much though, they were slow.

there are soo many good courses in this state you just don't know where to go :)

I played Shepherds Hollow today and the greens were not slow at all today. There are many sloped green at Shepherds Hollow and you need to place your ball in the right places to have a chance for par. It's a course that you will score better on the third or fourth time you play it. I played the Majectic earlier this week both courses and Moose Ridge are excellent. Michigan has so much great golf from South to North.

Another great northern michigan course is Little Traverse Bay. great lay out and very playable.

On another note as fair the lay out is at Arcadia, i feel that the greens truly hurt the over all experience for the average golfer.

Also one more course, I played back on the fourth of July. Very laid back and a little further east that most might travel but well worth it. Fore Lakes in Kimball, MI is about 30 minutes south of Lexington. Great course, lots of challenging shots, and of course the lakes. http://www.forelakes.com/

We are heading back to Michigan for our 2009 golf trip. We are going back to Boyne because we liked it so much, but on the way north, we'll stop for a day of play in the Detroit area and stay the night. Last time, we played Shepherd's Hollow on the way north. We may do that again, but does anyone have any other Detroit/Southeast Michigan recommendations? It would be nice to play at least 1 new track on the trip.

    • Welcome to TST @Camjr.   We're glad you've joined.
    • Angle is not a factor. I hit the ball 100’ high. Par is net birdie. My CH is 16. The rough between the bunkers is like 10’ wide though. That’s not something you’re going to try to hit on purpose. Most of the area to the left of that is fescue/native vegetation and I’m pretty sure there isn’t a flat lie in any of it. It’s the second hole.
    • Hello all.  I'm about to be 57 yrs old, started playing when I was 16, and have quit and restarted the game more times than I can count.  I had started playing a weekly round with a friend, and finally made the jump to Senior A shafted Tour Edge clubs.  Instantly gained 10 yds with an easier swing (why didn't I make that jump sooner???).  Glad to be a part of the group. Cheers all,
    • I think I like this hole.  It is a clear "Risk-Reward" choice.  Since most of the shots in your cone cleared the bunkers I would say they are a minor risk and not a big issue.  Playing the aggressive line may give you 70ish yards in from what looks to be playable rough while conservative play is 120ish from fairway.  I know you said 70 vs 120 is minor for you but how does the approach angle in impact your results?  I figure both strategies are playing for Birdie since holing out from either is mostly luck. Looking at your proximity hole I think it says @ 50 feet when hitting from the fairway from 100-150 and 40 feet if hitting 50-100 from the rough.  Neither of those is an easy birdie putt.   I like the approach angle from the rough between the bunkers & the adjacent tees over the angle from @ 120 in the fairway but I really do not like the idea of hitting onto the adjacent tee boxes and that may impact my confidence with making the shot.  Also, too far left may be a worse approach angle then from the fairway short of the bunkers. For me this may come down to how confident do I feel when I reach that tee box.  If I am stroking it well off the tee leading up to the hole I would try for over the bunkers and the better angle in but if I am struggling that day I would likely opt for the fairway to take more bad stuff out of play.
