Went out today and played the best round of my life.. I get home, clean up the clubs and notice the shaft of my driver has a hairline crack.. I look further and it is definitely broke, no way around it and no way can I continue to use it.

My receipt to Golfsmith was 6/27/2012, it is going to be 7/31/2012 tomorrow when I try to return this thing.

What should I do? New club? New shaft? Will they actually let me return the club?

I don't have the dough for anything new atm.. :(

If you go there and vociferously protest, especially to a manager, you might get a break. More likely, he might offer to reshaft for you which is a great deal if you can get the labor for free, costs like 20-25 bucks normally. Try to get a decent shaft put in, especially one you can hit on the monitor to try out. This is not likely your fault and you have no reason to pay to replace it. If they don't give you some sort of break, you might as well buy elsewhere.

It's worth a try man. But I wouldn't go in swinging bows, I'd start out talking nice and if being nice doesn't work, then you politely ask to speak to a manager and up the tone. It's amazing what a little niceness does.

+1

As long as you go in and are polite about it they should take care of you.  I've never had a problem with Golfsmith and all there employees seem to be really nice and knowledgable.

This smells like a lie and they may call him out on it, if they do that and suspect him to be lying he's probably not going to get any compensation.  Better to go in their and tell the truth than attempt to lie and get a free shaft or club.

I wont try and defend lying to them but I would bet the damage probably started within the 30 days and he just now noticed it yesterday.

The 30 day return policy is a playability guarantee...... ......there is still a warranty on the club itself that should probably be applicable here. I'd take it to Golfsmith and they'll likely either replace it or facilitate your warranty claim with Callaway. Either way you should be fine.

Thanks for the advice guys. I think they'll also understand its a golf club and not a pair of shoes.. i havent been swinging this thing for 30days straight. Much appreciation. Maybe the fact that i had to return this club once already because of a piece breaking off will help my case that this club is slightly flawed. [First return was under the 30 day]

Just left the store. They took the easy option and sent it into callaway. but hopefully it doesnt happen again even tho im getting the same shaft. Maybe reg flex isnt what i need? Maybe im a stiff that is breaking regular flexes. Was hoping to just do an exchange..no golf for me til then..however long it takes.

It's not possible to break a too flexible graphite shaft like that. I can swing around 120mph if I want to, and my other (reg flex) driver doesn't snap. It does warp like crazy, but you'd have to use a 5 pound driver head or hit a tree root to damage it in the downswing. The resin used to build graphite shafts is serious stuff and it doesn't break down readily.

The only way to break a shaft is if it's defective, improperly installed, or totally abused. Steel can fatigue a bit, especially lightweight and cheap shafts at the tip. If you shank with the driver the shaft can get damaged but that's tough to do.

Oh alright, thanks for the drop of knowledge. It does seem like this driver/shaft has been getting some negative reviews based on the quality of the build; breaking, etc. So that must be the issue.

So basically I've dealt with both issues of this driver..

1st issue: A piece broke off of the head and I returned it for a new club.

2nd issue: Current, the shaft shattered at the hosel

I don't abuse the clubs or hit ground, etc.. and I've only taken this club out to the course about 5 times since purchase.. so.. poor product. Which is disappointing because I do love hitting with it.

My ball speed is around 130-136, idk what the conversion rate is to swing speed.

Why no golf?  You can still play, minus your driver.  There is always something to work on with your game

So I got the call.. picked up my driver.. and hmm.. a new shaft was on it. A completely new shaft type..

the shaft that the driver came with..

the shaft that was on my driver when i went to go pick it up..

It feels a bit heavier.. which is fine and nice.. but im just wondering if any of you have experience with this new shaft they put on. Did I get a worse quality shaft or what?

  • 4 weeks later...

After plenty of rounds with this new shaft.. it's the absolute worst.

It definitely doesn't fit my swing.. my speed.. or my game. It's too stiff, and the whole club just feels off. The head itself, compared to the shaft.. is light and crap.

Plan on just putting a head cover on this thing and never using it again. Will sell it asap.

Callaway really screwed me. I was hitting so well before the break, great drives, great everything. I'm broke for clubs though.. so looks like I'll have to find a way to make some driver money.. or just 3hybrid it out until winter

    • Hitting some good shots on my golf trip. It's good I can tell when I hit better shots the way I want to swing the ball versus when I use an older swing. Shockingly, the short game has been at worst, not harmful to my game. I am using similar feels to the full swing, in that I try to get my hands down. I've been nipping the ball clean off the turf.
    • I was laid off two months ago. Good severance, a 90 day layoff announcement regulation the company wanted to avoid so technically I'm still on the payroll for a few weeks, and a bunch of banked PTO, so I'm in a great spot and working on a startup idea I've been batting around with my brother for a while. That means I've got time to get to the gym! I'm at like 60-75 minutes 5x a week of strength training, and either a run or a bunch of time playing soccer or tennis with my daughter on the weekends. Stronger than I've been in forever. Up ~5 pounds of (noticeable!) muscle!
    • Do you have examples of exceptional scores versus their established handicap indexes?
    • Day 539, April 23, 2024 Mirror work once again. When I get back to swings, I'll just do it A. LOT.
    • A bit of background. The Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) runs an annual event known as "Team Play." It is a wildly popular match play competition where Men's Clubs across the region put together teams of 20+ golfers together to compete against other clubs in a 16 vs. 16 match. In any given year, approximately 80-100 clubs will participate. Each club is grouped into "pods" of 4, and will play 6 total matches - one home and one away match against the other 3 clubs. The winning club from each pod advances to the Team Play Playoffs - a single elimination format - until a winner is crowned.  Antelope Valley Country Club just advanced to the championship match for the 3rd consecutive year. They won the championship in both 2022 and 2023.  Based on my review of the match history from the past 3 years (linked below), they have won 21 consecutive team matches. Keep in mind, these are handicapped matches, so this is not just a case where a group of sticks bands together to dominate the poor amateurs other SoCal clubs. Even if these guys are grinders who never quit, play their best under pressure and routinely putt the lights out, the law of averages still say that a streak of that nature is mathematically impossible.  Is there any plausible explanation beyond institutionalized sandbagging throughout the club?
