If you have an iPhone, go with Golfshot. I am so salty that they haven't updated the Android version to 3.0 because I have a Droid RAZR MAXX but Golfshot iPhone has a lot of great features and it's accurate. Don't think that $30.00 is pricey because it's not. If you were going to buy a GPS specific to Golf, you'd spend roughly $50-100 for a decent one so realistically, you're saving 20 bucks. The only downside with Golfshot iPhone is that from what I hear, it dominates the battery. On Android that isn't an issue because most Android phones have an extended battery available.

I tried the GolfLogix, and didn't care for it.  I compared it with fairway/tee box yardage markers and with my friends GPS and found it to be off as much as 10-20 yds on many occasions.I then downloaded the SkyDroid for $1.99 and it seems to very accurate, I did the same comparison and everytime I was within 2-3 yds of the yardage markers and friends GPS. The SkyDroid does give you front center and back yardages, but also gives you yardages to front and back on bunkers and water. Another cool thing about it is that you can use the aerial view as well. In aerial view you can zoom into the green and get more accurate yardages to the pin by just touching the screen to where you think the pin is located and will give you yardage to that. Very cool, and for $1.99 how can you beat it?

I use Swing by Swing religiously.... a great app and a real bargain..... all courses mapped for free, and you can even get them to map it for you if it's not in the database! (rarely isn't though.... I've only come across 1 course that isn't mapped in the 2 years I've been using it)...

The "Club tracker" part of the App is the part you will find  most usefull though.... you hit "start shot" before you hit the ball.. then as you are walking to the next location enter data such as club used and shot shape, then when you reach the finish location of the ball you hit "end shot" and the magic is done for you....

After the round you can check all shot distances with each club, the program also collates all your shot data and gives you an average "how far you can expect to hit" each club data output taking the average of all "full" shots with a particular club.... you can also see this data for that particular round while playing the round.... very usefull in case you happen to be hitting it hot that day...

VERY usefull to find out exactly how far you expect to hit a club... I really have my wedges dialed in now and am pin high 90% of the time.... wonderful piece of software... for a wonderful price.

Slowbo.

Your distances might be off because of bad info at the range.  At my local driving range the yardage plaques haven't changed in years, but the tees move almost every day, sometimes a good deal.  This is where a laser rangefinder is best...when I get there I laze the targets and get accurate yardages before I start swinging.

The Skydroid app can tell you a distance to any point and it offers the ability for you yourself to go in and add points to bunkers, water hazards or safe landing areas.

For the cost it is great and depending on your phones gps strength you can have distance of 1-3 yards off or as much as 10 yds off.

I've used it for 2 years and recommend it, but before buying it or any cell app, check if you have good cell coverage in the places you play.

If you don't then you'll just waste your money and should get a laser range finder imo

    • Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.
    • Right. The difference between being 120 out and 70 out for me (this is the important part) is negligible and not worth putting other risks into play off the tee.   Ok the argument against driver is that my shot cone is comically large. It puts every possible outcome into play. You can't see the green from the tee so there's a good chance I'd have to wait for it to clear which would slow down play. That's the third tee right in the middle of the firing range there. I really don't want to wait just to hit a terrible shot and I especially don't want to injure somebody. Yea I have no problem playing out of the rough short of the bunker if I'm just going to lay up short of the bunker, but I absolutely need to avoid flaring it right into the penalty area if I'm going to be laying up in the first place. As a general strategy I understand where you're coming from. But since we're specifically talking about me (this is a shot I'm going to have to hit on Saturday), I think the cost is fairly marginal. I hit the ball 8' closer on average from 50-100 than I do from 100-150 from the fairway and rough and the green success % difference is 4%. Bunker might as well be a penalty drop. Based on the data,  Here's my SG:A data compared to a 10: I honestly don't know how to use SG for decision making. That's why I was mostly looking at proximity to hole and green success rate for comparison. I mostly use SG as a way to track my progress. All good. Like I said, I appreciate the discussion. It makes me think. If I didn't want to see alternative/opposing viewpoints to my own I just wouldn't post anything. You should post it! In your own swing thread, of course. It's been a fun exercise.
    • Played my first 2024 round at Pierce Lake. Boomed my first drive down #10 fairway, then slowly slipped into mediocrity. 83 (69.6/131). The high point was going 2 of 4 on sand saves. My sand game is pretty marginal but today I must have discovered the secret for a couple hours.
    • day 34. Technique practice. Became too quick and outcome oriented. need to slow down and work on technique again.
