Reminder: Phil Mickelson attempting $1 million shot on Monday Night Football

During the the halftime show tonight for the Broncos-Chargers game, the "KPMG Chip4Charity,"will give Mickelson one shot to earn as much as $1 million for First Book -- which apparently comes out to 400,000 books. Phil will take dead aim from one of Qualcomm Stadium's end zones and fire at a target in the opposite end zone.  The target will have a green and three rings including a bulls-eye center.  The closer he gets the more money gets donated.  If he nails the bulls-eye the charity gets the $1 million bucks or 400,000 books.  Phil's sponsor KPMG will donate to First Book, a nonprofit organization, that connects book publishers and community organizations to provide access to new books for children in need.

Why didn't Quentin Jammer take a shot at it?  I saw him standing in the background.  (I'll be wearing my lucky #23 jersey tonight!)  Nate Kaeding has a halfway decent swing.

I am just glad that Mickelson will be using a mat, because if not I imagine that Phil Rivers would twist his ankle early in the second half in the divot that Mickelson left, causing the Chargers to go down.

I wonder if Mickelson will be donating as well?  Especially if he misses the target.

Oh, and I now have a crush on the girl in that video, whoever she is.

As a Colorado resident and native, I firmly believe Mickelson should not use a mat and just try to hit the mat while swinging from the Chargers endzone. In addition, he ought to make sure and take a few beaver pelts, and dig a few trenches while he's at it. While I think Payton Manning was a waste of money, I'll still be wearing #18 when the time comes.

The hometown Mickelson is a season ticketholder to the Chargers who recently bought a stake in the San Diego Chargers.

"My wife, Amy, and I, feel strongly that literacy and education are critical to the future success of today's youth," Mickelson said.

KPMG's Family for Literacy began five years ago in cooperation with First Book and is led by the spouses of KPMG partners and professionals from across the firm's offices. To date, KPMG has delivered more than two million books to children in local communities throughout the country.

Before the game, Mickelson, dressed in the powder-blue of his Chargers, joined the MNF set and was asked about the Ryder Cup. Two weeks ago, the Americans couldn't make a 10-6 lead after two days hold up and lost 141/2-13½ Europe.

"I'm still licking wounds," said Mickelson, who counts four major championships among his 40 career PGA Tour wins. "It still stings. It was one of the toughest losses I've even been involved with. I can't believe we didn't pull it through."

But Mickelson had little doubt who would win the game. Mickelson, pointing out that the Chargers have beaten Manning-led teams five of the last six games, and that the Chargers have beaten the Broncos nine of the last 12 games, took the Chargers.

So it seems he went long, but still got 50 grand.

I understand he hit his 56 degree... That's the wrong club for him. Bones blew it bigtime and now millions will never learn to read... I'd think he could hit his 60 degree to that distance easily and tends to underclub and swing hard. Dunno why he didn't go with the LW. Even I can hit my 56 100 no problem and I don't consider myself the longest iron player on tour. Sucks they didn't show it, though.

It was long, all right. around 125 yards. Even I don't miss that badly. It was almost a field goal.

Good game though. Phil should've asked if he could sub in for Rivers. Would've thrown fewer interceptions.

Yeah he rarely hits anything other than the 60 but if he is hinge and holding the shot a 56 would be about right. My guess is the adrenalin got him.

Were the rules such that the ball had to end up in the bullseye, or just hit the bullseye?  I hope it was just to hit the bullseye because I can't imagine that a plastic tarp is going to be very forgiving with the bounces and the spin.  Also, if that is the case, he only overshot by about 7 yards.  Not horrible considering the situation.
