If your handicap is what you claim, yes, you should not try this ball.   The ball has low trajectory & spins which will likely hurt beginners than help.  Golf can be an expensive hobby and there is no need to add to it by losing expensive balls into water hazards .

No I don't know or calculate my handicap - I just don't know how to remove that from my profile it's like it defaults to that.  I typically shoot in the low 90's and occasionally break into the high 80's and I play an average of like 3-4 times per month during the summer.  My natural shot trajectory is probably not what you call high but more low to mid.  I have been hitting it higher the last 3 or 4 years than I used too, most likely because I'm making much more solid contact and hitting more down on the ball.  I don't thin the ball much anymore, my bad shots are fatted.

EDIT - I just used a free online calculator to get a rough estimate using my last 5 scores at Conklin Players Club which is where I normally play and it spit me out a 17.  So I guess I'm pretty bad, lol.  I wonder though what my handicap would be if I didn't 3 putt seemingly 10 times a round

Callaway XR 9.5 + 1, Taylormade R15 3 Wood, Burner 3 Rescue, Callaway XHot 5H, Warbird 4H, Nike Vapor Fly 6-AW Irons, Titleist Vokey 54, 60 Wedges, Taylormade Rossa Fontana Putter, Srixon Z-Star Tour Yellow.

Best Score 2017:  82 (Traditions at the Glen, Par 70)

Favorite Course - Conklin Players Club (Par 72) - Best Score 86

I've been playing the Pro-V1's exclusively this season as I have taken a much more serious approach to becoming a scratch golfer. There is not a doubt in my mind that this ball out performs any other ball that I have used, most notably in the spin category. I may have seen a little increased distance with my driver, but I noticed a significant increase in how well I can control the spin of the ball on approach shots. Depending on the shot, I can make a 7 iron release 3 feet forward or spin 3 feet backwards, which really inspires a lot of confidence in my shorter irons.

Yes, they are expensive but that's just part of it. To help ease the cost, I usually buy a box of new Pro-V1's in the spring that will be used for tournament play only throughout the year. Then for practice, I go on eBay and buy Pro-V's that have been recovered and cleaned. I bought a bag of 25 balls for like $27 dollars, and about 15 looked 100% brand new. The other 10 may have some logos or markings on them, and maybe 3 would have very small scuffs caused from the grooves of a club (no cart path scuffs). I have yet to notice any difference whatsoever in performance between the box of new balls and the recovered ones that I've bought from eBay. The only differences are purely cosmetic with country club logos or sharpie markings.

I never understand this ball argument. I play any ball that isnt scraped up. I have played every brand and multiple models of each brand and have truly NEVER noticed a difference in any of them. I do not notice any difference in distance, spin, softness of landing, anything.

Yet I hear 20 plus HCP players saying they can only use one type of ball. I think it is more just a mental thing, they had a good round once with that ball and they attach confidence to that ball regardless of any real performance advantage.

I will ONLY play a brand new high number Titleist Prov1x with my own autograph on it.  Ever since I broke 110 to shoot a smokin hot 107 a few months back with a Prov1x my game has been on fire.  I have been smoking my irons like crazy with the Prov1x.  I can really feel it come off the hosel and toe of my long irons and the distance and feel is incredible.  My pitching wedge is blasting shots at least 115 yds and landing dead still with no spin in the green side rough.  I have been sticking the rough and it's all thanks to the brand new high numbers Prov1x with my autograph on it.

The prov1x has also reduced my pull hook to more of a straight pull.  I only with they made them in yellow to find in lateral hazards easier.

I am a PLAYER and the prov1x is a PLAYER's ball.

Theres nothing like waking up, heading over to the course, setting a fresh new Pro v1x on the tee, shanking it into oblivion and knowing, I am a player. Completely cosign this post.

Another thing I like about the Titleist balls (and I speak of the brand as a whole, not just the Pro-V1's) is how their logo is stamped on the ball. This is a very small detail and obviously shouldn't be the deciding factor on which ball you are going to choose, but if all other things were equal, I believe they use the most practical brand stamp. I'm one of the guys that likes to line the logo up with the line of my putts, and it's easiest to do with Titleist balls. All brands pretty much have added a straight text on the side that you could use for alignment, but I find it easier to use the wider "Titleist" text. I played some Callaway balls before switching to Titleist, and I hated their curved logo. I always had to put the "sharpie ring" on all of my Callaways. Good ball, just not a practical stamp.

Maybe I'm really stretching it to make a bid for Titleist at this point. The primary reason I prefer the Pro-V1's is the spin control. As I said though, if all things were equal, I still believe I would choose the Titleist brand for putting purposes. Now I can just add subtle markings for tournament play instead of having to draw a complete circle around them.

    • I agree with @klineka & @DaveP043 above.  When a new member first joins the club they cold be told that they are not eligible for tournaments until they have an established HCP.  As you said, it only takes a few rounds.  If they do not to post HCP that was their choice and choices have consequences.  If playing in the tournament is important to them then they should step up and establish an HCP.  Maybe they miss the 1st tournament, is that a real big deal?  And if it is a "Big Deal" to them then they had the opportunity to establish the HCP. As for not knowing how to report for HCP I assume your club has a pro and they should be able to assist in getting the scores reported and I suspect out of state courses may also have staff that can assist if asked.

    • Cool here's my tweak, "If a player’s ball lies in the general area and there is interference from exposed tree roots or exposed rocks that are in the fairway or 1 club length from the fairway the tree roots and exposed rocks are treated as ground under repair. The player may take free relief under Rule 16.1b.[But relief is not allowed if the tree roots only interfere with the player’s stance.]
    • I would never do the extended warranty on the $50 slow cooker.  I also routinely reject the extended service plans on those toys we buy for the grand-kids.  I do consider them on higher cost items and will be more likely to get one if the product has a lot of "Electronic Tech" that is often the problem longer-term.  I also consider my intended length of ownership & usage.  If my thought is it would get replaced in 2-3 years then why bother but if I hope to use it for 10 years then more likely to get the extension. I did buy out a lease about a year ago.  Just prior to the lease end date the tablet locked up and would not function.  I got it repaired under the initial warranty and would not have bought it out if they had not been able to fix it since IMO once electronic issues start in a car they can be hard to track down & fix.  They did fix it but when I bought out the lease I paid up for the extended warranty the would cover electronic failures because my intent is to keep that car for another 8-10 years and I just do not trust the electronics to last.  Last week the touch screen went black and was unresponsive.  It reset on the 2nd time I restarted the car but that is exactly how the last malfunction started.  I fully expect to have a claim on that on repair under the extended warranty.  I do not recall the exact cost to fix last time since I did not pay it but I think it was @ $700-$800 and I suspect that will be higher next time.
    • Have you looked at Model Local Rule F-9 Relief from Tree Roots in or Close to Fairway?  You could extend this to cover exposed rocks.  The rule is recommended to be used only for areas relatively near the fairway, a player who hits a shot 20 yards in the woods doesn't really deserve relief.   Players can always take Unplayable Ball relief, they're not required to play it from a rock or a root.  Of course, they hate to take the penalty stroke too.
