Is this normal? I got them brand new special ordered today, never hit before. I hit each club about a dozen times and they were all scuffed more than my 3 year old Taylormades. Even when I miss hit a couple, the inside of the clubhead was scuffed. This was just a ball, couldnt imagine if a little piece of rock or pebble got picked up with the club. Anyway, I am a perfectionist and this bothers me. Has anyone had this issue with the i20s, I mean when I see this after 10 balls, I start thinking my $900 investment isnt going to last me very long... Doesn't look like anything uncommon all new clubs have cosmetic wear after a range trip.

Maybe you could buy another set to look at for home? Just kidding... the wear evens out and they will look fine. Just look at the pretty shots instead.

My clubs look like that, only I don't keep the ball quite as close to the sweet spot as you do.  I hate it when I get those marks on the face out on the toe past the grooves.

Driving ranges are hard on clubs....they use so much sand that the grit marks up the clubs pretty quick. They say you should wipe the face after every couple of shots to minimize the wear and tear.

That happens, it's just the paint rubbing off. That's why you tape up irons in the store to try them out, even though you hit off mats. The balls often have nicks, and ranges have sandy grass, so as long as you're not hitting rocks, it should be fine.

Its just weird because after 3 years, my r9s have very minimal scuffing that looks this way. I heard someone say it will even out, but i dont see how thats possible since i dont plan to hit any balls on the top part of the face. Am i confused on what you meant?

Most range balls are pretty nasty, not unlike hitting rocks. I've had my new clubs about a week and you'd never know they are just a week old. Hit my AMP 3w from a fairway bunker and removed a good bit of finish from the bottom and face. My black pearl Cleveland wedges, finish was toast after a few hits.

Do some irons come with a light plastic spray coating to protect them during shipment, and eventually flake off? I have had irons scuff in the early going, but after I washed them a couple of times in hot water it seems the scuffs became less noticeable.

Any golf retail people who know for sure?

The only plus about range balls beating your clubface is it keeps rust off the clubface if you occasionally forget to clean off your clubs after a round.

Absolutely normal, just how PING's look after the first few shots.  Tour player's irons would look the same way.  Has nothing to do with the wear of the grooves, they'll last a long time.

Is that actual worn metal or golf ball skin? Can't imagine worn metal on driving range balls, unless they're not washing there balls... I have literally thousands of driving range balls on my clubs and it looks nothing like that, a brass brush makes them look new like they've never been hit. U didn't buy them from discounted retailer did u? (China)

Normal - get an eraser and most of it will come off.

That's not the grooves wearing - it's residue from the balls.

Enjoy the clubs. I can only imagine the pain you'll experience when the paintfill disappears.

  • 2 weeks later...

noticed today the irons actually had marks on them from hitting the balls that i could feel with my fingernail.  i.e. the clubface is actually scratched here (look on the left side).  is this all still normal?  i have hit only balls, no rocks...

Mine look almost identical ... except my marks aren't near the hosel like that, they are way out near the toe.  Whoops.  I see the nicks, and that's probably from bad balls, or sand on the balls, I'm guessing.  The black stuff, though, is probably the paint stripes from the range balls though.  Either way, it's not going to affect the performance.

I got mine in August and the first trip to the range I took my new wedge into the practice bunker.  On the 3rd or 4th shot, I discovered - the hard way - that there was a big rock in that bunker beneath the sand.  So I have a nice little chunk missing from the bottom of my sand wedge.

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
