Cold weather golfing....What's the coldest weather you've ever played in?

What is the coldest weather you are willing to play in?  In my area we are in the upper 40's, which I think with a jacket on is not too cold to play in.  But the courses here are deserted.

Granted, I am new to the game, but I always heard golfer's are passionate about their game and will play in nearly any weather.

I guess we are just a bunch of wimps around here

Hope you still have nice weather where ever you are at!

I don't care how cold it is, as long as the ball flies reasonably well I'll be out there. The problem here is the snow and frost. Until it's gone the course is closed. We had snow Sat night that is still on the ground despite 3 days of 50* temps. I'll be out early Sun morning if the snow melts and I anticipate it will be in the low 30's. Trying to line up a tee time for Thanksgiving today.

As long as the course is open, I will still play.  Quite a few times when I was still living in Madison, WI I played when the temps were in the mid 20s.

Played all last winter here in PA - it was below freezing, but no snow.    I made this tool out of an old ice pick that allowed me to get tee's in the frozen ground.      There were plenty of courses open all winter in NJ, few in N/E PA.      Tough to play for score, as not even Rory could put the brakes on a Pro-V1 on a frozen green ...

PS - learned one secret ... play with 2 balls - keep one in your pocket to warm it up, and alternate them on different holes.

Double edge sword. You get a lot of run on a good drive on hard, frozen ground. But it is really hard to hold a green if it is frozen.

With the mild winter we had last year it was fun to get out and enjoy those winter rates.

Why do they call golf "golf"?  Because all the other four letter words were taken.

I plan on playing in the 30's. As long as there is no snow on the ground. Places close here so I will have to drive south.

I ground down an old awl (ice pick) to the length of a tee, and use that to get a hole to put a tee in.   I've seen guys use those little electric screwdrivers with a hex head drill bit to bore into the frozen tee box ... might actually try that this winter

I used to say I need 50 degrees but now I'm thinking 40! I'll throw some rubber tees in the bag.

I've walked 18 holes when the high temp for the day was 8 degrees F!   Would I do that again?....of course not!  LOL

How cold now?  It depends on the situation.  If I've been playing a lot of golf and the temps drop to the 30's....I'll probably take a pass.   If it's been a cold snowy winter and a thaw finally comes and I have a chance to play golf when the temps are in the 30's....my answer is HELL YES...I'M PLAYING!  It just depends........

As a general rule, temps in the 30's are OK depending on the wind chill.   I have a cart cover that certainly helps!  I pull a ski cap over my ears and wear mittens between shots to keep my hands warm.  So long as my hands aren't numb.....I can play.

I will take the cold over the rain any day. Living in the PNW, usually the mid to upper 30's is the coldest I will end up playing in most years.

Some of you are hardcore!

I think 40, and no rain, will be my cutoff.  There is nothing worse than getting chilled to the bone in a cold rain!  Plus I think anything colder than that would affect my game.  Maybe I am just a wimp!

Guess I need to move down south :)

I was out yesterday at 29*. Ball didn't fly as far as usual. Greens were real hard, no fixing ball marks, tool stops just below the surface where the ground is frozen. Tough to gauge approach shots and I missed all the par 3 greens despite landing the ball on the green before rolling it off. Still it was good to be out golfing in mid Dec.

Hadn't thought of using an awl, great tip, thanks I'll do it.

Played Saturday (12/15/12) temp was 38* at tee time. No wind so it was a great day.

Depends on the wind, if its in winter and you get that southern wind that brings the temp up to 45 i am good to go. Same, i wont play golf in 45 degree weather if its a north wind and cold.

If i am wearing my underarmor longsleeve shirt i can play down to about 40 depending on how i feel.

      Taking your dispersion and distance in consideration I analyzed the 4 posible ways to play the hole, or at least the ones that were listed here. I took the brown grass on the left as fescue were you need to punch out sideways to the fairway and rigth of the car path to be fescue too.  Driver "going for the green"  You have to aim more rigth, to the bunker in order to center your shotzone in between the fescue.  Wood of 240 over the bunkers I already like this one more for you. More room to land between the fescue. Balls in the fescue 11% down from 30% with driver. Improve of score from 4.55 to 4.40. 4 iron 210 yards besides the bunkers.    Also a wide area and your shot zone is better than previous ones. This makes almost the fescue dissapear. You really need to hit a bad one (sometimes shit happens). Because of that and only having 120 yards in this is the best choice so far. Down to 4.32 from 4.40. Finally the 6 Iron 180 yards to avoid all trouble.    Wide area an narrow dispersion for almost been in the fairway all the time. Similar than the previous one but 25 yards farther for the hole to avoid been in the bunkers. Average remains the same, 4.33 to 4.32.  Conclusion is easy. Either your 4iron or 6 iron of the tee are equaly good for you. Glad that you made par!

      Wish I could have spent 5 minutes in the middle of the morning round to hit some balls at the range. Just did much more of right side through with keeping the shoulders feeling level (not dipping), and I was flushing them. Lol. Maybe too much focus on hands stuff while playing.

      Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
