That would probably just cause a massive spike in c*ckheads, " hey look! I'm on TV! "

Agreed ... the exposure is EXACTLY what the morons are after.  Ignoring them, or discreetly removing them, is the best way to make them go away, I think.

I wish they would stop yelling "get in the hole" after teeing off on a par 4 or 5...

It's pretty simple and I don't know why it's not already being done, boot their A$$'s off the course, police escort style. I would guess that less than 5% of the fans are truly idiots; it might actually increase attendance...

The "get in the hole!!" guy is the largest D-Bag in the world of sports. There is no point in yelling that out after every single shot. Especially on the tee box of par 4 and 5's. Just absurd.

A couple of thoughts: 1) Yes, have on-course security started ejecting the obnoxious fans.  They are certainly not there to watch the game, but to be buffoons.  2) The TV booth could mute the on-course microphones immediately after club contact.  Someboy would have to be quick with the mute button, but the way they jump around from camera to camera, it seems there are plenty of guys in the TV truck available.

You have to have security at each hole and just escort those out that yell out stupid things for attention.  The security officer should just walk over and escort them out discreetly, no television coverage or extra attention.

Maybe make it a rule that those that yell things and are escorted out are banned from future events like they do with the idiots that run on the field during baseball and football games.  I don't remember fans doing this at the Masters this year, if they didn't maybe they need to figure out how they stopped it.

It's annoying to hear them when I'm watching a tournament at home, I can only imagine how grating it is to be there in person while these idiots shout out these stupid phrases they've come up with.

I hate those idiots shouting all kinds of nonsense out there. "Nice shot", "WoW", "Woooo" or something like that is fine, but that other stuff is just ramblings of an idiot, perhaps drunken at that. I'm not saying golf should be the stiff upper lip gentleman's stereotype, but it's not football and it's not hockey.

"Mashed potatoes" was fun the first time. The following 542 was just *facepalm*.

If they are able to, give people warnings and throw them out if they don't stop. I can't imagine most of the spectators care much for it.

Forget the warning - put the warning on the ticket.  Make it zero-tolerance.  You do it and are identified, you are out with no refund.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

This problem is not limited to golf. Though it seems like a weird thing to happen at a golf tournament. People are stupid and selfish. Some feel the need to make the effort to become part of the show. It's been a big problem in music for some time. I've been to intimate acoustic concerts where people have talked right in front of the perfomer causing them to stop and attempt to end the disruption. I find it silly and inappropriate. In the same way that you wouldn't blow a duck call in church. I'm not sure what the cause is but it is rampant. It's like someone uncorked a bottle of nerds and they're running free unchecked. Too bad they don't realize how lame they are.

Dave :-)

Good thinking.  An active, visible campaign by the PGA to promote this would likely stop some of the morons (some, not all) before they even start.

It drives me up a wall to hear something yelled out after EVERY shot now.  Doesn't matter who is hitting it, if its off the tee or not, 90% of the shots have someone yelling something stupid.  I say zero tolerance and escorted off the premises and banned from the rest of the tournament. The announcer guy who does the Euro events puts me to sleep but I much prefer their ambience over having to hear so much garbage during PGA tour telecasts from "fans".

My philosophy on golf "We're not doing rocket science, here."

According to one of my buddies, who has gone to several Masters tournament using his families annual tickets/passes... They get tickets every year - and their passes have been in their family for years.  My understanding is that they are like willed into the family and passed on from generation to generation.  And your ticket privileges can be revoked for acting like a hooligan very easily.  They have a lot of rules for their patrons to abide by.

For the few who buy a ticket from a broker or scalper - the average ticket price is significantly higher than any other sporting event in the world... I've heard of folks spending $1,000 to $2,000 for a weekend pass...  Therefore I'm guessing the folks who do buy tickets, aren't willing to risk getting thrown out after dropping that amount of coin?

Agree completely. One strike, you're out, no refund. Include it in the terms and conditions on the back of the ticket.

Ignoring won't work.... they already do that.  Expulsion would eliminate 90% of it, because they want to be able to go home and brag to their friends and hear themselves on Tivo.  If they do it once, then security hustles them quietly off the course, that's too embarrassing for most people to risk again, especially after they sober up.  If they want to act like idiots, go to a football or baseball game.  It's accepted practice there.

How about print this on the back of each ticket:

Dear Spectator:

Due to the recent increase in unruly shouting, particularly after tee shots, such outburts are now expressly forbidden and will result in your removal without refund.  These outburts detract from the grace and finesse of the game of golf.  Examples of such outburts are, but are not limited to, the following:

"You 'da Man"

"Get in the Hole"

"Mashed Potatoes" (or any food-related phrase such as "Fried Chicken", "Beef Stew", etc)

"Light The Candle"

"Yabba Dabba Doo"

To ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for all, please only say the following golf-related phrases in a normal speaking volume:

"Nice shot"

"Good one" or "Way to Go" (spectators choice).

"Wow"

Thanks for your continued patronage and support of the PGA Tour.

People would then complain that you were infringing on their right to free speech and would threaten lawsuits.  Sadly, nowdays most people are all about their own rights, even if that infringes on the rights of others.

Free speech is not protected on private property

Free Speech is the government has no right to make any laws that would infringe upon your right to free speech, since a golf course is privately owned, they can kick you out for what ever reason they want.

Now you can stand on public right of way (sidewalk), and yell, "YOU THE MAN", all you want :p

Why don't the Networks just hire Moose & Rocco from Caddyshack to help the offenders find their way into a water hazard?  Off camera, of course.

Free speech is not protected outside of the government arena.  Just like the right to bear arms is limited by each state and banned in DC despite what the Constitution states.  Threatening a lawsuit is always a possibility but more lawyers wouldn't touch it.
