Today I had one of my greatest moments on the golf course, my first hole in one. It was on #4 of the South Course at the Golf Club at Terra Lago. The hole was playing at 156 yards from the tees I was playing with a middle pin and I hit a great seven iron that landed on the front of the green and rolled right it. It was a great moment!

The depressing part is that I was all alone without another golfer anywhere near me... nobody saw it. I know that I've mentioned somewhere on the forum that I was afraid that my first hole in one would happen this way because I play a lot as a single and sure enough that's how it went down.

Congratulations on the ace. The only one I have had I never saw it go in the hole. The pin was behind a bunker on the front of the green and there was a hill between the bunker and the hole where you couldn't see the bottom of the flag. The only way we knew it went in is because the guys on the next tee started hollering.

That's a good point; at least I got to see mine drop into the cup...

I still wish somebody had been there to see it though.

This reminds me of the USGA commercial where the kids makes a hole in one and is looking around to see if anyone saw it. I can just see you looking around.

Still it is a lot of fun to have a hole in one. Something to be proud of. Did you buy yourself a drink?

I was actually replaying the front 9 when it happened and I didn't hold it together too well... I finished double, triple to shoot a 44. It was late in the day and the ball was getting hard to see though.

76-year-old makes two hole-in-ones in one round

Most golfers only dream of making a hole-in-one in their lifetime. For Nashville resident Sam Jones, one just wasn't enough.

The 76-year-old made two in the same round playing with his seniors group at Windtree Golf Course in Mt. Juliet, Tenn. on Dec. 6.

"For an amateur to accomplish something like that is pretty unheard of," said Dan Felton, events director at Windtree Golf Course.

According to the National Hole-in-One Registry, the odds of accomplishing such a feat are 67 million to 1.

The two aces boosted Jones' lifetime total to five in 31 years of playing.

Using his Cleveland 4-iron hybrid for both shots, Jones aced a pair of par-3s — one on the front nine and one on the back.

The first came on No. 5, a 120-yard hole with a large green and an uphill slope.

"I don't see long distances very well, and thankfully I had two other guys playing with me. I hit the ball straight at the green and saw it hit and going toward the hole," Jones said. "I couldn't make it out going in the hole, but both of those guys said, 'It's in the hole,' and there was a group beside the green at the tee for hole No. 6 that saw it."

Playing with seniors group members Milton Frazier, 67, and Robert Abney, 76, Jones had plenty of witnesses for his memorable accomplishment.

"He hit a beautiful shot," Frazier said. "It landed on short of the pin on the green just to the left, and it just kind of rolled uphill to the pin in the back of the green and it curled in."

The second was on No. 11, a 125-yard hole that played downhill with a back-of-green pin placement.

"I was just kind of dumbfounded I guess," Jones said of his reaction to the second one going in. "I thought it was going to be short, but it hit the green about middle of the way and rolled up into the hole."

"I was just beside myself. It is just an unbelievable feat," Frazier said. "If I had not seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn't believe it — I saw it and it is still hard to believe."

The group of nearly 70 seniors meets each Wednesday at Harpeth Hills Golf Course, and a portion of them travels to play at various courses around Middle Tennessee on Mondays and Thursdays.

"We've had lots of hole-in-ones, but I don't think I've ever heard of (getting two) before," group organizer Terry Weakley said. "We have a good group. Some of them are pretty sharp, and some of them are pretty lucky."

When pressed to classify Jones as a golfer, Weakley laughed and said, "He's semi-good and very lucky."

Frazier said he's never made a hole-in-one of his own but has now witnessed three for Jones.

Abney, also serving as a witness on three of Jones' holes-in-one, is still in search of one of his own as well.

"Put me and Milton down as jealous," Abney said. "Maybe we're just a lucky omen for him."

Jones, an evangelist for Harpeth Baptist Church in Kingston Springs, remains modest through all the success.

"The fact that I'm even able to get out there and play is good to me — I just love being there."

    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
