I am working on my swing into a net.  Without being able to take a divot I am looking for a way to verify I am hitting down and taking a divot in front of the ball.

Is it a valid test to put a paper towel an inch or two behind the ball and see if you it the towel?

Assuming you're laying a single paper towel flat on the mat, I'd put it way closer than that. Almost touching really. If you put the paper towel 2 inches back you could still be hitting the shot fat. Search divot and mat in the forums here and you'll find lots of suggestions, most involving painter (or masking) tape.

Yours in earnest, Jason.

Tape works (and doubles as cheap impact tape), or cardboard instead of paper.  I use cut-up beer cartons sometimes because it's thin and stiff.  (and readily available.. lol).

Paper towel does not move and it gives great if not messy feedback.  Tears a part off exactly at the point of impact with the ground.

Interesting. I stand corrected.
