I enjoy getting paired-up with strangers.....................9 out of 10 times, it's a good experience.

I honestly don't comprehend why anyone wouldn't like to play with new people unless they feel insecure about their game.  IE....they are bad golfers and are afraid to hold up play.

In my experience, if you're a horrible golfer but respect the course and play at a reasonable pace for your abilities, even most scratch golfers don't mind playing with you.  Most I have run into are awesome, even when you suck.  For the most part, they are very understanding, and remember the days when they weren't so good at golf and usually try not to make you feel uncomfortable about playing badly.

Yes.  Part of the reason why I haven't taken my wife to the local muni ... she is nervous for this exact reason.

I'd prefer to play with friends but don't mind if I have to join another group.  Sometimes it is a benefit, for example, I played a course for the first time and caught up to this older guy who played the course before, he gave me some tips of where to hit the ball on the front 9.

There was a time when I first started when I'd rather play by myself so I didn't hold anyone up when I would hit a lot of bad shots, but now it is much better when you play with someone or a group for the competition aspect and so you have a witness when you hit a good shot and can get some validation for it.  I'd dread the day I played a round by myself and hit my 1st hole in one.

You're right on the $$$$$$$$.   I honestly enjoy the company of all golfers.  I don't care how good or bad they play!  In my experience, the golf skill means nothing.  It's all about the social................if they are pleasant company, it's all good!!  ....and it's usually good 90+% of the time.

For me, there are only 2 deal breakers:

1.........pairing up with players so slow........that my group falls 1+ holes behind and we are backing-up play for everyone else.  For me, this is excruciatingly painful. IMO...this experience is worse than a stick poked in my eye....LOL

2........playing with that temper tantrum guy......that guy throwing clubs and cursing every shot gets...this gets old.

Otherwise....my experiences playing with strangers is quite good....... 90% of the time.

I have to admit that a few years ago, I was that guy...........  I'd hate to say that, but it's true.

One day while playing with a good friend of mine, I hit a horrible tee shot and slammed my driver into the ground and then threw it (and it wasn't the first time I had done it).  We were standing next to a lake, and I went to pick up my driver and my buddy said "I've got it" and went and picked up my driver and started to walk back toward the tee.  Before he got to where I was standing, he threw my driver as hard as he could into the middle of the lake.

I couldn't believe he did that, and just stared at him, pretty shocked.  He looked at me and said "If you're going to treat your club like that, you obviously didn't want it."  He then proceeded to tell me that even though I was one of his best friends, if I ever acted like that again, he would never play another round of golf with me.  At that point, I was legitimately ashamed of the way I had been behaving on the golf course.  From that point on, I promised myself that I would never get physically angry on the golf course, no matter how bad I was playing.  Since then, I haven't done much more than give a quiet "Damn It!" after a horrible shot.

After we finished that round, he proceeded to take me into the Pro Shop and buy me a brand new R9 Driver, on the condition that I treated it right, and didn't act like a maniac on the course ever again. It was that day that I realized how that effects the entire group you are playing with in a negative way and how it was forcing people away from playing a round with me.

I'm sure you're being facetious or attempting comedy but this is a good example of why I don't like to play with others. My bad experiences last year included a half round with guys at least 40yrs older than the cart girl detailing how they would ravish her. By the 9th hole I'd heard enough and elected to pass on playing the back 9 with them and headed for home. I'm all for admiring the female form, just don't understand the purpose of being gaudy about it in the company of strangers. Though I'm sure the beer had something to do with it. Another thing I enjoy almost daily but not at 10AM.

You and I might be better matched than I thought.  I tire quickly of testosterone driven sexual slurs too.  I don't know why it is that so many guys choose that method to validate their manhood.

Yeah, If I get that elusive first ace I want to have someone to buy a drink for. LOL  Makes me think of that old USGA commercial where the kid gets an ace and the only one to see it is the groundskeeper.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Ditto.  With my luck I will get my first one with no one around to verify. My buddies will call BS on it until they see it with their own eyes.

I usually get a little more nervous on the first tee box with strangers.

Have had some real dinks, but also some good people.

I once paired up with inspector fu*cking gadget. He had every piece of training equipment possible in golf. He also smoked the most pot I have seen a person smoke in 4 hours.

He offered me a beer and I said 'Sure' and he handed me his driver by accident?

LMFAO, that is hilarious, just spit coffee everywhere

Umm, that's an average score.  And if you play on a public course with a threesome, you have to expect a joiner.

So that's max one extra shot on every hole compared to your score.

I really don't care how many times he hits the ball. Did he keep up? Buddy of mine plays off of an honest 23 and struggles to break 100. He can get around in under 4 hours easily though. As k-troop said though, if you're on a public course with less than a 4-some, you're going to have others paired with you on occasion. At least you will unless the starter is an absolute incompetent.....

Have to agree. A few weeks ago I was playing with a couple friends and had an elderly lady paired with us. My only complaint was that I didnt light up a cigar because she was riding with me, but we actually had a good time. (And she was a much faster player than my 2 friends)

I suppose that you never played that badly, even when just starting out?

Yesterday the started joined our 3-some with a single. Rode in the cart with me. Very nice older guy, hit the ball straight, was friendly, told a couple good golf jokes, and knew the course well. He was giving me advice as I had never played there before. Actually had lunch and a beer with him after the round and exchanged business cards.
