What is interesting in that my ball height is noticeably higher than most everybody.  I am a picker and I am working on a more descending blow.

Do other people out there have verified max ball heights?  If so what are you seeing?

I don't have any verified heights as I've never been fitted.  But, all of my club distances are basically in line with the average listed above in the PGA Tour table, with the exception of my 3-wood and Driver.  Would it be safe to assume I am around these different ball heights for my clubs?

I want more of a descending blow because I believe I will get more distance out of it.  I know distance is not everything but it helps a lot.  A high ball flight that you have trouble getting down is very difficult in the wind also.  Can I land a 3 iron on a green, for the most part yes.  If there is a 10 mile an hour wind the descent angle isn't going to help being able to control ball in the wind with a the high flight. By the way I am the guy that reads the advertising for clubs that says, "helps you get the ball in the air" and I think what like straight up?

If it is windy, why wouldn't you just hit a different shot? Your stock shot isn't meant to cover all conditions. If you are striking the ball well, why mess with that?

I know this sounds dumb but what's the best way to lower trajectory with a full shot? I can do it when I'm hitting a punch shot but I don't know how on a full swing. I have a friend who hits hot 100 yard approach shot nice and low with a lot of spin and I have no idea how to do this.

If you can carry a 6 iron 190 and your handicap is a 17 I would work on less distance and more accuracy.  Try a 3/4 swing that goes 170 but lands on the green.

My biggest issue is my outside in swing pulling some of my irons, and also when I am within 110yds on most holes at the course I play at my short game is struggling.

But i was just asking a question in general more curiosity then going out to instantly work on it.

I hear you, figure out that 1/2 swing with your wedges and how far each goes.  It will bring your scores down fast.

This is an old thread and I'm a new hack but I'm wondering if I should be more worried about the height or the launch angle. And when I say this I'm thinking of middle of the fairway and thinking about what club I should grab on the approach shot. If I put my mind to it I can get a lot of height on the ball but it's at the cost of 10-20 yards.

Do you control the height by positioning the ball or with more lag or both?

    • Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
    • Just stumbled onto the article.  Totally random and thought it might be interested to hear other thoughts. maybe I am tired of all the LIV crap and  this just caught my attention.
    • Day 1: Spent some time hitting some balls. Working on my hips and a “soft” and straight trail arm.
