I'm 53 and have played golf since 5 or 6.  My dad's 82 and has been shooting his age or better for the past dozen years. I played on my high school golf team and then my college golf team (although it definitely wasn't that competitive), but I was never able to really give myself over to the game.  I got married soon after college to an amazing women, had/have three wonderful children (now young adults), but never seemed to have the time/resources to play any more than 4-6 times a year.  Now, after teaching for many years and the Lord blessing us in so many ways, I have the opportunity to truly devote myself to this wonderful game.  I'm wondering if any of you fellow lovers of the game would care to chime in with any friendly suggestions and words of advice.  All takers are welcome! God bless!

Tough love!

To the OP, welcome to the forum! As someone in your age group, here's what I'd suggest.....

Join your state amateur association and play in every local, county and state tournament you can. When you're winning everything you look at at the state level, move up to national competitions such as the USGA Senior Amateur. Once you get to the point that you're able to play at a level competitive with Fred Couples, and Vijay Singh, you'll be ready to consider a run at very few Champions Tour qualifying spots that are available each year. Until that time, have fun and enjoy the game!

Since you played since you were 5, to be real, I don't think you should have a problem.  I think a lot of those older guys started when they were like 4 or 4.5 years old, so they might have a better short game.   We did a party last week to get my uncle to sign up for that tour, after about 12 beers he agreed to do it, then he started drinking beer also.  But when they faxed him the application, they were asking to many personal questions, so he filled it out no problem with my aunts credit card and social security number.  It pisses me off a little, because I think he is just doing it to get one of those oversized golf bags they use, when his spot could go to someone like you who actually likes to play.  He is alos telling all the girls at the cheese sandwich factory that he is on the tour.  I want to prove it to her that he isn't but i don't think there is anyway to find out for sure.

what david in fl said..... plus play a toooooon. Groove your swing to a point where you don't need to make any major changes, and then play every course as much as you can. Play on different courses with different grass, different shot shapes... play with as many people you don't know to. Get used to playing with someone new to make sure you won't get nervous (at least, not as nervous) as in a tournament setting. I would read sports psychology books and learn how to deal with pressure. I'd say the difference between the average web.com tour player and an average pga player is the ability to hit the shot when it most counts... they are all great players! Everyone can hit Tiger like shots at the range... gotta take it to the course.

Driver: 10.5* callaway Razr Hawk Tour - 350 yards(usually into the wind, it can be windy here. at least 400 with a little wind behind me)

Hybrids: 2 and 3 callaway Hybrid razr tour (312 and 287 respectively)

Irons: 3i-10i callaway forged standard length(278, 263, 250, 235, 221, 213, 201, 190)

Wedges: callaway jaws cc 52* 12 approach, 56* 16 sand, 60* 13 lob (0-185)

I wonder who on this forum is a PGA tour pro, disguised as a normal player..

I appreciate the effort that it must take to write this much gibberish, if not the intention.

You cannot see them, but there are thousands of guys your age, many with better credentials than yours, doing their yoga every morning, eating only healthy foods, avoiding alcohol and tobacco, putting in 4 hours each day on practice. If you aren't doing all that, and more, then you deeply underestimate your competition. These guys live in USA, England, South Africa, Thailand, Japan, Argentina...anywhere there is a golf course. Your desire is exceedingly common. However, your goal is possible, but very improbable. Better luck with the state lottery.

To bad Gilberg probably will not ever tell us his uncles name.  I would definitely be pulling for him to win.

To the OP: If you think you can compete with Fred Couples, go for it. If not, just enjoy your time out on the course. Simple poll to determine if you are good enough to play on the champions tour.

Are you the best player at your club?

Are you the best player in your state?

Are you the best player in your section?

Have you qualified for any USGA Senior competitions?

If you didn't answer yes to all of these, then maybe just enjoying rounds with your buddies would be a better goal.

Yeah, wanna make 14 dollars the hard way?

I'm a "by the numbers" kind of guy. You will need a handicap of +2 or +3 at your local club to have a shot. I'm not going to lie, going from a 9 to a +2 in going to be VERY difficult but hey, if you can devote the time needed, I say go for it. I would definitely agree with playing some local tourneys to see where you sit.

At 53 you're past your prime already on the Champions tour. Your best chance of playing on that tour is if you pay for one of the pro-ams.

Gilberg keeps posting 2-4 times then disappearing for a couple months. Perhaps the asylum where he lives keeps revoking his internet privileges.

I think one of the mods should start a Gilberg thread.  They could put everyone of his posts in there.  Should be good for laughs.
