Pretty new to golf and the forum but I have gotten decent with a 60* around the greens. When I am really on, I backspin the crap out of the ball, yet it never bites and rolls backwards. It seems to pause and then roll forward, like a car spinning out. When I am messing around I snap my wrist while ball is on clubface to add extra spin(really soft shot). I can see it spinning like crazy but nothing. The other day I spun one and it hit the fringe and spun backwards towards me. Not what I wanted. Seems like it "bit" on the fringe grass but it wont bite on the green. I can back up a whiffle ball on carpet. Just dont get why it wont roll back on a green. Green too hard or do I need supermassive backspin ?

Normally I dont, although its tough to hold greens where I play. However, there are some instances where I would really like to back it up a few feet like pitching over a hill when the pin is close to the hill.   If it would bite and roll back, I would have a little more room for error. I can only spin the 60* and sometimes the 52* on medium to light pitch shots, but every now and then I need it to come back some instead of rolling forward 10 -20 feet or more. If it would stop or come back some it would just be extra ammo in the arsenal of shots. Would be useful once or twice a round.

I don't mean to be condescending, but you're not good enough to be playing that shot. Nor are you (I hope) playing the high spin ball you need to play that shot. Learn to hit a nice little chip that will run like a putt and a little high pitch that will hit soft and stop in 10 feet or so. You'll be more consistent, will save shots, and will lower your sores and handicap.... ......and that's what it's all about! ;-)

I don't think I've anyone, even a pro, spin it a few feet back on a shot inside 30 ish yards, and if you're good enough to hit a high spin shot right by the hole from that distance, probably should figure out why you're that distance to begin with. Shouldn't ever need to back it up, land it short of the hole. The quickie pitching thread technique can have only a few feet of release if you practice enough.

I wonder who on this forum is a PGA tour pro, disguised as a normal player..

Not only do Pros have perfect swings, they also have the best equipment tailored to their swings, the perfect balls tailored to the swings, and they're playing on perfectly mainicured courses. That all helps them to spin it like they do. An amateur playing on the local muni won't ever spin it like that, nor should they worry about trying.

My ball can hold a green, normally. That said, last August I played a course that hadn't watered their greens in days and they were like concrete. Not even Ben Hogan's ghost would have been able to spin one back on them. haha

It looks cool, but don't worry about ever pulling it off.

I still think that shot is useful at least once or twice a round, although I dont know if it is possible on N Texas black gumbo greens.  I appreciate all the inputs, and have come to the conclusion that until I play softer greens, pause and trickle is all I can hope for.

    • We do not buy extended warranties. We will use one of our credit cards for the purchase that extends the warranty "x 2". Our thoughts are: a. if the item is a lemon, it will likely break right away and we can attempt to apply the original warranty or credit card extension. b. over the long haul, we will probably save more money by not purchasing the extended warranty and fixing/junking broken items out of our own pocket. The important thing is to keep some records of purchases so one may make a claim under the manufacturer's warranty. I recently sent back some Footjoy shoes for leaking and Footjoy did a reat job of making the claim process work very well. I had the original receipt, warrant info and box. Easy peasy.

    • This is pretty much how I look at it.  I understand there are times when the piece of mind has value. I think over the long haul I'm money ahead by never buying the extended warrantee. Hell, What do I know? I went to Ch!cago PubIic SchooIs.
