Forgive me if this has been addressed elsewhere - I did a quick search and couldn't find it.

As I was watching the RBC Heritage I noticed a few players in their preshot routine doing that very outside-in swing that goes across their bodies.

What are they trying to promote or accomplish by doing this?

Yeah, I have seen that too.  Most notably and I think most exaggerated ... Tiger Woods.  The other, off the top of my head that I know does it is Graeme McDowell.

I have no idea, but if I had to take a wild guess I'd say that perhaps because their tendency might be to miss with a swing that is too much in to out?

But seriously, that is a complete wild guess, and I really don't know.

That's pretty much it.

Corey Pavin does it too.  Tom Watson mentions this in Lessons of a Lifetime .

Good obseration OP. I started noticing this when Sean re-tooled TW's swing, and now it is becoming increasingly popular. Maybe I should try it, as my standard miss is a hook, and usually even when I try to swing down the line, my divots are still slightly in-out.
