Switching out 4i for hybrid

6 posts in this topic

I know it doesn't matter, but it's a bit of a blow to the ego. I can hit my 5i and up fairly consistantly and well most of the time (when I've been practicing...). Recently got a 21* 913H to replace my 3i and I hit that well too. My 4i however is a damn mess. At the range I flush 1 out of 5 balls. Because of this, I really only use my 4i for punches under trees. Being a fairly fit 30 year old, I feel like I should hit this club, but I'm considering swapping it out for a 23* 913H. Any other younger dudes who've done the same? Happy?

If I could wear a pink tutu and hit the ball better I would.  What was your question again?

LOL... That actually made me audibly laugh...

Dude... I'm 31, and I carry a *bleep*ing FIVE -hybrid...

The emotions you're experiencing are one of the biggest mental barriers to amateur golf success, i.e. the poorly-inspired desire to "man up." These same neuroses also lead to things like swinging too hard, buying stiff shafts when regulars will better suit your game, using a Pro-V1x when any mid-range ball will work just fine...

In other words: don't worry about it! If it helps your game, do it. Even if it means wearing a tutu...

Lol. Fair enough. I know I should, and chances are very good I will very soon. Guess my only question is whether there's any downside to hybrids compared to long irons (e.g. If by some miracle I did learn to hit a 4i well). I can't think of any...

The only real downside is not being able to keep it low with most hybrids. I don't think you bought one to keep it low though.

Lose the ego and go with whatever makes this game easier.  My irons are pretty much a set of hybrids (hollow irons) and I couldnt be happier with them.

Sure, Id love to have a set of forged blades but for right now Im loving the distance and launch of my MX-1000s.

    • What'd You Shoot Today?
Hit my first 100+ in 9 or 10 games - 101 (low 90s hitter of late) Which really pissed me off because before today, I would have said the only reason I'm struggling to shoot under 90 was because of my driver getting me into jail all too often, Today was the best day I've ever had with a driver, not once in the woods, hit 11FW in regulation with an average of around 220/25, which is an absolute first for me by a mile. However 52 putts, lost count of how many triple putts I made - off the charts! In my defense I've never played on such challenging greens, also a first for me, still no excuse.

Hi, Dan. There was a brief thread on that here (easy to miss as the volume of topics can get pretty high around at times): I just played a round today at a fairly popular county-run course (Twin Lakes), and I only see a couple GG rounds there per week. Surprised me, as I thought I might see a few per day or something. Since I play in the mornings typically, I doubt I'll have the luxury of a pin being marked prior to my playing that hole! After 4 rounds entered, here's how I stack up against 15-handicappers: GG gives me an 18 index, so let's see.... 6 strokes lost in driving and putting. 2.7 gained in approaches/short game.  That's 3.3 lost compared to a 15-handicap. Math works out. Also seems about right- my irons have been decent, as has my play around the greens. Driving erratic (too many penalties), and I've lost focus on way too many first putts to give me too many three-putts.
    • Your best golfing bargain
E-bay   200.00 fairway wood new for 50.00  sitting in my closet till the one I use breaks or gets a time out.
    • Rib fracture
I haven't been playing but just because of my schedule. I'm actually about to go play a little executive course in about an hour or so. I feel pretty confident because it never hurts in the gym anymore. I hope you feel 100% soon, try to give it more rest than you think it needs. Also make sure you are getting proper nutrients, someone with a broken bone may want to look into bone supplements because of the need for additional calcium. I took this pill called bone restore or something to make sure I got an adequate amount of vitamin D, calcium, etc
    • Reading Greens
I passed on Aimpoint. That doesn't mean that was the correct decision - I could probably use the skills there. Instead, I just created my own pre-shot routine, just like with any other shot. I won't go through my whole routine, but basically when it comes to reading breaks I squat down and the most important part of it (for me) is me determining which was the green drains rainwater. All greens have to drain. I then take a very wide look at the green in my peripheral vision and match it with the trees in any treelines around to have an offset in my vision to determine the magnitude of any slops/breaks. Then I just imagine lightly tossing a ball in my mind and seeing where I think it would go. Works for me, for now. May not work for you. I just realized that when I focused hard on a line and where I was going to put it that's when I would greatly misread breaks. Putting has a huge negative tunnel-vision influence on me.
