How to win scramble tournament, is my team competitive?

16 posts in this topic

This will be my first time playing in my company 4 people scramble tournament and also my first time playing scramble tournament golf. For various reasons I haven’t played in my company’s past tournaments but usually the winning scores were around -15 or -16.

The best player on my team graduated from high school last year and he was a decent junior player who plays between 67 to 85 in his tournaments last year. He won two tournaments. He got scholarships offers from the Northeast colleges but declined (wasn’t good enough for Arizona or UCLA). The other two players have 12 and 9 handicaps and I am a 14. From your experience, will we be competitive based on the ability of our team? We will play from the white tees. What should be our strategies? Do I hit first or does the best player goes first or it doesn’t matter the order?

As far as strategy, let a consistent driver of the ball hit first. Once he's safely in the fairway, one of the other big hitters can try to get aggressive. As for putting, let your best putter go last. That way he gets 3 reads at the line before he goes.

Scrambles are good fun, but if you look for anything more than fun out of them you're setting yourself up for a disappointment. The lack of a marker means there are always questions around the winning score and as a scramble isn't played under the rules of golf there can be strange situations arise that might not be resolved to everyone's satisfaction.

Get the putts to the hole if you already have a tap in. Lag putting and good scramble scores don't go together.

Just go out , have fun, and drink as much beer as you possibly can (..err I mean, "network"). If you try too hard, someone will post a 55 and ruin your day.

Are they factoring in handicaps?  Sometimes they will take 10% of total handicap, which in your case would be (0+9+12+14) * 0.1 = 3.5.  So you would have to shoot a -12 gross to be competitive.

Some people say that putting is the most important factor, but I disagree.  Scrambles always come down to approach shots.  There will typically be one drive that is usable out or the 4.  Then, if you stick it in there to say 10 feet, there is a much better chance of birdie than say 20 feet.  Even with 3 looks at a 20 footer, it's still a low percentage putt.

practice your irons leading up to it. Out of 4 people someone is always in the fairway or has a good look at the green. Then it will be all about someone putting it close.. But in a scramble when your the only team on the hole, I will tell you that someone will be using an easer to get a skin or to atleast place in the money or prizes to make it worth it. I hate playing in them and normally never play in them. I only play when it is for a good cause. I look at it at a donation to support whatever the cause is and then networking and meeting new people.

Thanks everyone for you advice. Our company winning prize is just a dozen of golf balls for each winner so hopefully people don't cheat. The raffle prizes are worth far more.

I will try to work on my wedges for distances between 50 to 120 yards and putting. I think we will play according to handicap, with the highest handicap going first.

That's an 18 stroke difference, I hope you get him on one of his 67 days.

I play in a scramble every year to benefit the local school district's athletics programs. We have won it 15 years in a row. Last year the combined handicap of my 4-man team was 4 and we shot a legit -20. We don't get anything for winning, its just fun. So, don't be too caught up in winning, because you could always have a bunch of a$$holes like us stack a team that you have no chance of beating. Scrambles are a lot of fun, just enjoy being outside and realize it beats the heck out of working. If you do end up winning, it will be a bonus.

I pretty much agree with this-regardless of handicap.

Really depends on the rules, if they're selling string, mulligans whatever. Scrambles can be different formats with different "rules". Typically the only strategy we use is ladies or weakest hitters hit from the tee and putt first. That way there's at least one safe shot in play and the big hitters can go for it and you get a line on the putt. Last one I played was a fund raising event so string and mulligans. We posted a 56 and that was only good enough for T3, 48 won it. In those typically the team that spends the most money buys the victory. The 20 feet of string means they only need to get the ball within 2 feet. We bought 12 mulligans and used every single one. Fortunately they had someone posted to grab scorecards as soon as teams came off the course so the creativity was limited to the string and mulligans.

I have to agree, if a scramble is set up to be competative, with A, B, C & D players, no mulligans, and they compete by the rules. Usually 6-7 under is a very good score to win. this is usually the winning score of the scramble i play in every year. The guy running it, get a lot of people to return, and he pairs them up by ability pretty good.

As for a charity event, your looking 15-20 under. Depending on mulligans bought. A lot of teams might have 3 A players, that probably means a lot of Greens in Regulation, and very good putters.
