  1. 1. Has Sergio Garcia officially taken this too far?

    • Yes. He shouldn't have said that.

    • No. That remark wasn't racist.

Garcia was on stage with the rest of the victorious 2012 European Ryder Cup team when he was asked by Golf Channel's Steve Sands, who was emceeing the event, whether he would invite Woods over for dinner at the U.S. Open next month.

The Spaniard replied, according to The Guardian : “He can come over every night – we will serve fried chicken.”

People are sensitive. In my mind, it's not a racist comment, it's a stereotype.

Sergio is, plainly put, a moron. I don't know how someone that has a head as big as his can make it playing a game that requires a good mind game. I'm slowly gaining a little more respect for Tiger since the scandal, mainly because he's getting so much bull crap from the media lately.

First, I'll state that I'm far past ready for this Sergio-Tiger thing to go away.

Second, it all depends on intent. If Sergio was attempting to make a joke about the Fuzzy-Tiger fried chicken incident, then no it's not racial. If he's making that statement because of the racial stereotype, then yes it is.

Let someone talk long enough they will show you who they really are. That remark was racist as hell. You would think Sergio would keep a lower profile after the players.

I guess I look at what being racist is differently.  To me, a racist comment would be something that was negative based on that persons race.  To me, while the comment is stupid, it's just stating a stereotype.  Tiger is also Asian, if he said he'd serve some sesame chicken, would you still think it's racist?  People need to relax.

It's not racist as much as it's ignorant.  Sergio would be best served to shut his mouth and stick to the European Tour where he can avoid having to get his butt kicked by Tiger again.   Maybe Tiger can invite Sergio over for some taco's and Spanish rice...jeez what an idiot.

I've officially gone to not caring about him to not liking him, totally classless.

I wanted to answer "no it was not racist, but he should not have said it". So a mix of the two. I think he was trying to make light of the Fuzzy joke that went over extremely poorly and this one was just as poor. Just a stupid thing to say.

This is pretty much exactly what I was thinking. I'm not sure Sergio was actively trying to channel Fuzzy though, that would be downright moronic with the way Fuzzy's comments were condemned.

Then again, "downright moronic" pretty much sums up the whole Sergio vs. Tiger thing.  They both need to grow up and act like professionals.  The media is feeding off it and blowing it way out of proportion, but a "no comment" response by both of them when prodded by the media would shut the whole thing down.  You can't maintain a fire if there's no fuel.

As to the OP, "Channeling Fuzzy" was the first thing I thought when I initially read the comment too.

Sergio apologizes, but not to Tiger:

"Sergio Garcia is apologizing for saying he would “serve fried chicken” while making a joke about having Tiger Woods over for dinner.

The British newspaper The Guardian reports Garcia was asked in jest while on stage at the European Tour’s awards dinner Tuesday night if he would invite Woods to dinner during the U.S. Open.

The Guardian reports Garcia said: “We will have him round every night. We will serve fried chicken.”

The newspaper says Garcia released a statement through the European Tour: “I apologise for any offence that may have been caused by my comment on stage during The European Tour Players’ Awards dinner. I answered a question that was clearly made towards me as a joke with a silly remark, but in no way was the comment meant in a racist manner.” Garcia has acknowledged not getting along with Woods."

Sergio made a remark that is routinely aimed to make light of a certain race in a derogatory manner -- therefore, I'd call it a racist remark.

Hmm... everyone says they are tired of the verbals between these two non-niceguys. But if they end up in the last pairing on Sunday at Merion, people will turn their TV's on, I think. It would be quite a setting for Sergio to win his first major in. A litte heat spices things up, as long as it's not too much. Hearing Tiger swearing or seeing Sergio going bezerk in bunkers doesnt bother me too much... I prefer that to Dufners och Goosens blank faces no matter what happens on the golf course.

This so-called story has to end and be buried forever. The drama is more intense than what you find in reality TV.

    • Agree. The next omission needs to be that ridiculous team concept. Nobody cares about a team when they really don’t represent anything except being a group of diminished morality and/or washed up pro golfers. Or wait, we’ve also got total nobodies who’ve accomplished nothing who now get a participation trophy! Doesn’t that sound invigorating!
    • LIV moving to 72 holes is a subtle admission that 54 holes was nothing but a joke all along.
    • I was going to start a thread, but this seems like the place.  Yesterday I played my matchplay match at my local club.  My opponent is a notorious sandbagger by reputation.  The pro once pulled his tournament rounds from the past several years and said that it is impossible his tournament rounds are legit based on his handicap. here is what happened last night.  I am getting 4 shots from him.  His current handicap index is 15.3 i shot 45 on the front.   Was down 4 after nine, he had three birdies and shot even par. I was closed out on thirteen, we halved with a bogey.  That bogey put him one over par for his round.   He then took a triple on 14 and then left. As if that wasn’t bad enough, he lied about his score.   I wrote down on my scorecard what the score was.  He put higher values that didn’t affect the outcome of the match to pad his score and apparently make it not look as obvious.   He shot 36 on the front, but claimed 40.  The higher values for his score were in the online scoring app our club uses.  He did it this way: I won #7. He had a 2 foot putt for par that if he made would still lose the hole.   He picked up and said it didn’t matter since I won.  He took a 5 instead of a 4 after picking up a gimme. on #8 his approach shot on this par 4 was 8 inches.  I verbally conceded the putt but I had hit into a hazard.  I finished the hole with a 6.  Instead of birdie he put in for par. on #9, another par 4, his approach was to 18 inches.  I missed my par putt and then knowing how close I verbally conceded the putt.  I missed my bogey putt, he never conceded mine.  Instead of birdie he put down a bogey. He padded his score by 4 shots on the front.  And then did again on 10.  I rinsed one and made 6 on a par 4.  I putted out and he was fishing balls out of the lake so I drove off to the next tee.  He had 15 feet laying two but claimed a 5.     love to know the odds of a 15 handicap being even thru 12 holes on a round of golf.
