I believe the good folks that run this site actually prefer a resurrect to a new thread on the same topic, I mean they do merge stuff all the time right? But it is funny when someone replies directly to a 4 year old comment in the thread.

The correct term is "Vanity Handicap". Typically.......these are the guys who play a lot of golf but only post a small number of scores each year.  More often than not, if you look up a player who is a 1HC and he only posts 20 scores a year......he's probably carries a vanity HC.

There are exceptions though.........some college golfers who are legit plus handicappers post very few scores too for Handicappying purposes.    They only play scratch events anyway so it doesn't really matter.

Never quite understood the vanity handicap. I played with a guy last year who was supposedly a +1.  I recognized his name from our member roster, and I asked him why he never played any of our association tournaments. He told me that the competition wasn't strong enough in our association and that he only played in the regional and statewide competitions. I then proceeded to beat him by like 12 shots. He shot like 81. At the completion of our round I told him there was plenty of competition for him in our club.

I have since looked up his handicap index online. None of his tournament scores are below 80, yet his scores for all his casual rounds are all under par. Having played with him and witnessed his game there is absolutely no way this guy ever breaks par. I bet his fellow competitors just loved him at the US Open qualifier where he posted a lovely 94.

It's especially fun when you have someone like that in a money game.  In poker that's what they call a "fish" - he's just donating to the cause.

It does suck sometimes to get those guys in an ABCD event. I was in an ABCD scramble last year. My "B" player was terrible. The good thing was my "D" player was a giant sandbagger so they cancelled each other out!
