How is my scoring progressing?

2 posts in this topic

This is my first year of playing golf, I played some last year but only 5-10 times. I have really been playing quite a bit lately, hitting the range and practice green as much as possible. I was shooting in the 105-110 range less than 2 months ago and I have fixed many things in my swing through the help of my friend who is a scratch golfer. Yesterday I played 18 at a par 72 course and shot a 91! It could have been lower but my short game still has many hiccups. I feel that shooting in the low 90's after a month and a half was pretty impressive. It could have been mid 80's if I would have made a few of the handful of mid range par putts that I missed. So general thoughts on how I am improving and how long did it take you to break 90?

Great job!!!!  5-10 times last year is quite a bit so I don't know if I'd judge a month and a half as being fair ;) but nonetheless that's great!

You pinpointed it that the short game was your problem.  It's the fastest way you're going to knock off strokes so make sure you give that a lot of time to practice.

I was the same way sort of, I picked up the game for the first time and played maybe about 10 times shooting 100-120.  I fell in love and really worked on the game the following year when the snow melted.  I didn't shoot a low 90 score until mid summer I'd say.  I think I broke 90 the end of the year and then broke 80 the following year though.

Practice a lot, and especially work on that short game, and keep up the great work!

The distance one practices and one plays in a tournament are two different things. I've looked at the course lengths on the tour and they typically play 6400. I'll use our local TPC Snoqualmie Ridge as an example - the whites are 6111 and the blues are 6522. They'd probably practice from the whites but the course set up for a tournament would be one all its own: about 122 yds shorter than the blues which could be accomplished by playing the from the whites on all of the par 3s, and a couple of the par 4s.

Did he steal this from @iacas . I am sure I've hear Erik mention this feeling before ;)  I am pretty sure he is means where the right arm is at and with relation to the club. You don't hold an umbrella with a laid off club position, it wouldn't keep you dry. With Ricky's case he probably needs to feel the club that much upright at the top to get where he wants it. It's also a good feel for not getting the right arm retracted behind your side and keeps it out more in front of the body.

I wasn't looking at it this way.  But that is a very good point.  I recently read on another topic the idea of driving a tee all the way down 4 inches or so behind where you tee the ball.  And imagining there is a ball there to have a "target" for the low part of the driver swing. I tried this last night just hitting into the net and using foot spray.  And the results were very good.  Strikes were higher middle instad of low heely or worse which has been the consistent norm. I am going to take to the range and try.  I have way too many bad shots from hitting down and sky marking the driver or hitting too up and catching a teed ball thin.
