I drive the ball well.  Maybe not well relative to e-golfers who carry 260 on a bad day.  But I drive it well, I have 1 or at most 2 OB drives per round, and I grunt during my drive.  Nothing loud, just a subtle grunt that is the result of exhaling my air while beginning my backswing.

What are your thoughts on grunting?

I'd call hindrance, make you Sharapova/Nadal types replay the first one and then start docking points for excessive gamesmanship any subsequent times.  That is an awful habit, it's unsportsmanlike and it should have been nipped in the bud when Monica Seles first started doing it.

Oh wait.... wrong sport.

I want to say you're probably swinging too hard if you're grunting. The only time I can think of grunting when I do anything is lifting in the gym and that's because of the massive amount of effort being put into that exercise.

But whatever floats your boat...

Whatever works.  Id probably chuckle if I ever got grouped with you though.  Now if you yelled, "POW!!!", we might have an issue.

If it works then there's nothing that can be said of it IMHO... I know playing Mens Softball that our SS is a small guy but he grunts sometimes when he hits and I've noticed when he does he gets sharp low line drives up middle all the time... So I'm guessing there is something to be said about grunting!!!!!

I play with a guy who only does that when he hits a block. Don't even have to watch the ball, if we hear "ooofff" on the tee box it's staying out right. Weird.

Stretch.

Played with a guy who did this, only time i ever heard anyone do this. It was very weird to say the least. He wasn't that very good of a driver of the ball.

Though there is some credit to releasing a grunt. Or if you look into japanese sword fighting, they have that KYA sound that is used during the strike to release tension from the body, increase speed and power. Tennis players are widely known for this, some of the noises they make are hilarious though :p

I like to imagine my grunt as a sound similar to a t-rex holding in a sneeze.

What really helps is yelling, "MASHPOTATOES" in the downswing

L
I drive the ball well.  Maybe not well relative to e-golfers who carry 260 on a bad day.  But I drive it well, I have 1 or at most 2 OB drives per round, and I grunt during my drive.  Nothing loud, just a subtle grunt that is the result of exhaling my air while beginning my backswing. What are your thoughts on grunting?
I wouldn't mind. It would be something I could bring up with my regular guys for some laughter. I agree with an earlier post - if you're grunting to let out pressure, you need to work on that. If, on the other hand, you are grunting for showmanship, then more power to you...

I can't grunt an yell mashpotatoes at the same time that's what my playing partners are for. One of them yells mashed potatoes the second one yells get in the hole and the third one acts surprised when my drive only goes 245. Good playing group.
