It can be complicated because there are still talented as hell players out there who can't handle the pressure unless they do some serious work on their mental games outside the ropes... it's like that old military mantra of "craving fear" or learning to love the fear that some guys have and some guys don't. Or maybe they just aren't born with that part of the brain? It's hard to know the answer.

So I'm not so much being argumentative as I am just having a conversation trying to gain more insight on it.

They are probably just...stupid.

JoRdAn sPiEtH MAdNeSs !!

Jordan grew up in the Dallas area and went to Dallas Jesuit. I know a few guys who have talked with Jordan over the years, and they describe him as a good guy with his head screwed on right. He's had good experiences in the Byron Nelson since he was 16 and even made the weekend, finishing 16th and 32nd as an Am in 2010 and 2011.

Yea it's a pain in the butt, but that's the system they run when a playoff runs extra long.

I was actually laughing because I took my son to the movies right after Spieth hit his approach on 18 (in regulation) into the bunker, at about 2:40.  Found out via text on the way to the movies that he holed out to tie for the lead.  Grabbed some popcorn, junior mints, and a soda, and enjoyed the hell out of Despicable Me 2 for the next 1:45 or so, went home and ... I'll be damned, they're still playing!?!?!?!  Saw the last putts drop ... and only then did I learn/realize that he's still a teenager!!  Way to go, kid!

When it went to the GC, they bounced back and forth between the Utah Championship and the John Deere.  Never missed a shot of the John Deere as far as I could tell.......  I was watching on a bit of a tape dely though, so if a buddy hadn't called me to whine about CBS cutting out, I wouldn't have known to switch over to the GC until it was too late.

Yea, I was scrambling to find it too as I was about 15 minutes behind until I sensed 60 Minutes would take over. So I DVR'd the golf channel just in case. But again, I was only 15 minutes behind so... not so much quick thinking as much as I've been screwed by playoffs ruining my DVR plans in the past

I felt bad for the Canadian player.  He could have won it twice.  He needs to ditch the long putter.

He's gonna be seeing that missed 4 footer for the win in his dreams for the rest of his life!

Frankly, I think he'll make it moot and win before the playoffs. Hes gotta figure out Sundays.

That didn't take long, did it?

Spieth definitely made my OP moot for this year, but I still think temporary members should be able to earn points.  Without the JD result, Spieth would have 614 points instead of 1,114 and be in 61st place...give him t2 points and he would have 859 points and be in 24th.

My point is the next guy in Spieth's position might see a Zach Johnson par 18 or a David Hearn make a four foot putt to win the playoff.  Spieth played great and put himself in position to benefit from his hole out on 18 and the others misfortunes, but I think he would have deserved a spot in the Fed Ex Cup playoffs even if he had not been victorious.

Without the win, Spieth would still have 6 top 10s this year and 859 points compared to current #125 Shawn Stefani who has 310 points and 2 top 10s.  Who would you rather see in the playoffs? The PGA Tour should start allowing temporary members to earn points before the next Jordan Spieth loses in a playoff.

  • 1 month later...

If Jordan Spieth goes on to win the Fed Ex Cup (or even places in the top 10), then the biggest shot of the year will be the bunker shot that he hit the middle of the flag stick with on 18 and holed to get into the John Deere playoff.  That ball could just as easily have gone into the water and without that win, he would not be playing in the Fed Ex Cup and would not have invites to the Masters and other tournaments that he qualifies for by making the Tour Championship

Biggest shot of the year was Tiger's third on 15 on Sunday at Augusta. 2 inches left and this entire year might have been a lot different.

    • Welcome to TST @Camjr.   We're glad you've joined.
    • Angle is not a factor. I hit the ball 100’ high. Par is net birdie. My CH is 16. The rough between the bunkers is like 10’ wide though. That’s not something you’re going to try to hit on purpose. Most of the area to the left of that is fescue/native vegetation and I’m pretty sure there isn’t a flat lie in any of it. It’s the second hole.
    • Hello all.  I'm about to be 57 yrs old, started playing when I was 16, and have quit and restarted the game more times than I can count.  I had started playing a weekly round with a friend, and finally made the jump to Senior A shafted Tour Edge clubs.  Instantly gained 10 yds with an easier swing (why didn't I make that jump sooner???).  Glad to be a part of the group. Cheers all,
    • I think I like this hole.  It is a clear "Risk-Reward" choice.  Since most of the shots in your cone cleared the bunkers I would say they are a minor risk and not a big issue.  Playing the aggressive line may give you 70ish yards in from what looks to be playable rough while conservative play is 120ish from fairway.  I know you said 70 vs 120 is minor for you but how does the approach angle in impact your results?  I figure both strategies are playing for Birdie since holing out from either is mostly luck. Looking at your proximity hole I think it says @ 50 feet when hitting from the fairway from 100-150 and 40 feet if hitting 50-100 from the rough.  Neither of those is an easy birdie putt.   I like the approach angle from the rough between the bunkers & the adjacent tees over the angle from @ 120 in the fairway but I really do not like the idea of hitting onto the adjacent tee boxes and that may impact my confidence with making the shot.  Also, too far left may be a worse approach angle then from the fairway short of the bunkers. For me this may come down to how confident do I feel when I reach that tee box.  If I am stroking it well off the tee leading up to the hole I would try for over the bunkers and the better angle in but if I am struggling that day I would likely opt for the fairway to take more bad stuff out of play.
