Keys to consistent ball position?

I've become convinced that one of the reasons for my inconsistent play is inconsistency in ball position, primarily distance from the ball. For those of you that are better players and tend to be fairly consistent, what are your keys to insure that you are a consistent distance from the ball, given that the lengths of the clubs vary and therefore so does the distance? Thanks.

Best way I've found is to try to maintain a consistent distance between the butt of your club and your body.

Routine.. If the ball is in the center of a clock, 12 pointing down the target line, then i walk in from the ball around 7-8. What i will do is, place the clubhead down behind the ball with one hand on the club. Then take my stance. This gives me a yardstick to keep good distance between me and the ball.

Not sure if I qualify as a "better player." I do practice well.

I use a $5 yardstick on the range. I know the correct distances for my swing and often (not as often as I should) lay a yardstick and and alignment rod (marked for how far apart my feet should be for each club) on the range. This "hitting station" helps me groove the correct feeling for each club.

My Moe Norman swing has training aids that I also use (a ball position alignment board) that help me practice the correct setup for my swing.

What I have always done is set up to the ball and grip it only with my left hand and then place my right hand between me and the grip. I touch my pants with my pinky finger and touch the back of the grip with my thumb. I make a "call me" sign with my hand and that creates consistent set up position away from the ball.

I am in the same boat. Found something researching that said get your posture, line the clubface on the ball and let your right arm dangle straight from your shoulder with no control from you. Move it straight over to the club and that's how far you should be. Set the left hand acordingly. Seems to be working although it makes me closer to the ball but seems more powerful position. I am a semi- hacker though so just passing on a way I found online that seems to be pretty easy to get consistent distance from the ball.

I was recently told to check my 'gate' before every swing.

Apparently I was guilty of trapping my hands in close to where my knees were & my chest, so now I ensure my hands have a sizeable distance between them before every swing. This has greatly improved my consistency

      Not much of an update, as due to a lot of work in the run up to exams, I haven't actually hit the range much recently. I've also quite enjoyed taking a break from endless swing thoughts and just getting things feeling a bit more natural. The flight is now high, with a 7 iron flight looking more like what my pitching wedge used to look like. The shape is now usually right to left with the bad miss still when I get the face closed at impact. Distance is definitely better, too, with a 7 iron now carrying around 170 on a good hit - at least 10/15 yards longer than with that shorter swing I had around the turn of the year. I'm going to get on the range a bit more in the next few months and will start uploading some footage, but things are looking and feeling pretty good.

      I find it becoming a strange discussion. My 2c. Stick with your evolved instructor. Or respect the given instructions. And deal with it. Use what you think is helpfull. Otherwise I do not understand why you would seek advise in this thread. I might be wrong but to me it seems you do not trust your evolved coach and or the given opinions.    To me, it presents an insight how top coaches are looking at your swing.

      Handicap card completed - Off a 23 which is a bit higher than I'd like, Going to play in my first comp next month hopefully. Still working on those blow up holes. Shot an 86 yesterday which is my best round in a long time!

      Because you seem to think that nobody else has any valid arguments, I felt compelled to contact a friend of mine and ask him about the subject. He has won twice on the MacKenzie Tour, 4 times on the Gateway Tour and played in the US Open in 2010 at Pebble Beach. I Facebooked him a few days ago and heard back from him today. He said that his Tour buddies of that calibre typically shoot in the mid 60's (or lower) if they play an "average" course for a Pro-Am or a sponsor's event or for a casual round. He added that he played a municipal course in Phoenix last week (he didn't say which one) and shot -8 without ever having seen the course before. And he was never able to make it through the final stage of Q-School so he self-admittedly doesn't have the skillset of the PGA guys. I still say the average Tour player would shoot in the low 60's at my course. Here's the scorecard of it, and Nick Taylor's scores from the 2006 Provincial Tournament. He was only a junior at the time and hadn't played for the University of Washington yet. Safe to say his handicap has improved a little bit since then  and he still shot 68 twice and under difficult tournament conditions! No way he'd shoot that now.
