Okay, I see. The point is whether a lob is sufficiently useful or not to kick out an extra long club.

While you don't need Phil's talent to be a semi-magician with a LW, it's a personal choice.

I think the LW is a valuable "get up and down" weapon, and I've practiced enough to wield it somewhat effectively. I've changed philosophies over the years. But after trying everything, I'm firmly in the Stan Utley camp of soft arms, no lag , and pivot around your lead foot, which is the similar method that Erik and Mike employ on this site. They got me back to reading Utley and watching golf videos. Then I saw that MayoWaiteGolf is employing a similar method. That's enough evidence for me. The Verdict is in - use the lobber ... for me.

I rented this weekend and the set had a 60, but no SW (for me, that's a 56).

Normally the SW is my 'go to' club for most everything within 100 yards.  So I had to use the 60 for all my shots.

I was taking good swings for the 60, on anything from 20 to 80 yards, using it for pitches, it had enough bounce for the course.

I absolutely loved it.  I'm reconsidering pulling my own 60 wedge a lot more now.....

Added a 60* recently and even though I don't use it a lot it has been useful, especially in situations where you need to make a tight pitch or chip over a bunker and get a lot of spin to make it stop.  I have used my SW in the past with mixed results but with a LW I can get it to sit down more easily that an open faced SW.

In my bag:

Wow. I couldn't imagine heading out for a round without my 60* Callaway. I have a pretty high handicap (18), but for some reason me and that wedge have always clicked. My driver, woods, mid-irons & putter are all a crap shoot. But the 60* is one club that I have total confidence in. If I'm anywhere inside of 50 yards of the green that wedge is in my hand.

Same goes for me for the love of the wedge. I have had my 60 degree Callaway Jaws Series wedge in the bag since 2010. Love that thing!

I would have a

4 iron

21*

19*

3 wood 15*

I think this will work better for me.

i think that pretty much says it all... do what you think will work.  you'll never know until you try.

If you aren't good enough to use a 60 degree then by all mean lose it. If the greens are slow, I can get by without it. It is my favorite bunker club because they turn the sprinklers on the traps on my course and use shitty sand, so you need to use something without much bounce. Now if the greens are fast and you are faced with tight lies then a 60 degree is your club in tight situations, but most people can't pull off the shot. It is also a factor of how good you are at hitting various clubs different distances. In my case I am better at adjusting the longer irons and find I am more accurate with a four wedge bag.

My 60deg low bounce only comes out when it's off a fairway lie near the green and I have a hazard to get over but on those occasions I'm glad I have it.

If there's no hazards to get over then it's a variable bump and run.

Any sort of fluffy lie or rough to content with and it's normally the SW, since the high bounce generally results in more consistent contact.

    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
