Interesting Golfers You have been pair with?

As a teen, (45 years ago), my two brothers and myself were matched with an 80+ year old golfer. We hit the ball long and wildly, while the senior hit it about 120 straight, every time. We walked 9 holes together.  He told us stories of his youth and taught three teenagers how to be gentlemen on the course. This was one of the few venues where young men and senior citizens could come together and spend a wonderful summer afternoon.

Most interesting pairing I've had was a guy who worked for GE and spent the entire round telling me how he got to play eat, drink and play golf on the company's dime.  He'd played some of the nicest courses around and charged them all to his company card.  After our round, he insisted upon buying me lunch and a few drinks.  I tried to politely decline, but he was not going to take no for an answer.  I spent a good 90 minutes sitting there listening to him tell stories.

A few weeks later, he was nowhere to be found.  His 'high life living' had caught up with him and GE fired him.

Live and learn, huh?

That is a great story, it is very cool how the older players interact with my son. I know he gets a kick out of talking with them, they are always kind to him and aways offering there help.

I think one of the reasons I have always felt comfortable around older people is the time I spent caddying and golfing as a teen- when you leave school and head off to the real world, this can be a big advantage over someone who has had limited interaction with older people. There are certainly other ways to get this experience, but golf is a good way to do it.

What I do remember about the old guy was his name.  It was Glen Dillon and for some unknown reason he carved his name in a crossbeam of a wooden shelter on one of the holes.  This was at Gallaway golf course in Memphis.

A few really... First one, I turned up to play a competition on the Sunday, paid me sweep and asked the pro who I was playing with, the groups where shuffled a little due to a few not turning up, with a grin, the pro said "Barry White", said to him "Well, I hope he doesnt break out singing half way round!" :) Met Barry outside and what a lovely fella, though obviously had to sing the odd song while going round! ;)

Then, in a competition just last week, I looked on the website on Saturday to see who I was playing with, Chris Brown, thought to myself "Me and bloody singers", then spied his handicap... Played off 3, thought "Christ!", and there's me shooting with a 24 head start... Anyway, Started playing a few holes, bit chinwag going round, then he asked me what I did, said I was a builder, asked him the same question... Ruddy secretary of Boldon golf club... He plays over at our place because thats his leisure time, and I tell you what it is, one of the most interesting rounds I've had, got a lot of inside guff to the cogs of club golf, and even though he was an awesome player, very modest in his approach to his game, genuine nice fella and he even bought me a beer in the club house afterwards... Oh, and I came off with 37, he had a 38... Nearly got him! ;) hehehe

Then I've had rounds with blatant cheats too, their interesting to go round with, magically finding balls where I know there wasnt one there, "checking" if a ball is theirs in the rough and putting it back, but, improving the lie of the ball, changing rules to suit, miscounting shots then argue the toss when I say "Are you sure?", I love them me, because I dont actually care if they cheat, but, will put pressure on them when I know they are, like, looking for a ball, I'll stick to them like glue, remind them if they are going to check the identity of a ball they have to notify everyone in the group of their intention, then when they bend down to pick it up, I'm over the top of them... Really gets their backs up, and sadly for them, they get stressed, bugger the hole then go in the huff... Me, I just walk away grinning thinking "You bloody idiot!" :D
