I'm new to this forum and just saw this thread...after reading the original post I imagined he was talking right to me. In fact, it was exactly that time (July 13) when I was trying to establish my official handicap. I had just joined a club and needed an index to join the league.

Anyway, here is my story if anyone is interested. Been playing since I was about 12 (24 years ago) and was better than average in HS (about a 6) but never needed an index. I didn't play in any tournaments besides the school events, so no one cared about an index. We just played golf (lowest score wins).

In college I didn't play seriously, just with some buddies every once in a while and if it was for money, same thing applied. Lowest score.

After that I didn't play much and bounced around for a while (in the Navy) so didn't have a regular group to play with. Establishing an index never occurred to me, I just tried to go as low as possible. Never really played for money that much, which is odd to some.

Then, once I settled down and could afford to play more I joined a club two years ago. Now the index means more than anything. It was a bit of a struggle at first, but getting used to it.

It can be hard for guys like me when we are giving up 10 strokes to someone and get pencil whipped, but that is the way it goes. I can deal with it.

I tend to play in events more when there is a gross winner. Feels like more of a challenge, especially when there are a couple of scratch players in the field.

Really good JB. That ought to make me the highest handicapper out there on Saturday.

I got to think I jacked something up with my earlier score postings. I've played like utter crap lately, but I wasn't playing that well in May either.

Up for the third-straight time to a 20.6.

Outside of working on my main piece, I think one reason I've had a good drop in my index is just because I've been playing a tougher rated course more often.

I got in five 18 hole scores (some of them were two 9's combined to 18) between 07/01/2015 and 07/14/2015.  All five are now included in my top ten of last twenty.

My HI is now 17.6 down from 19.2.

Impressive, I love that feeling of entering my scores online and looking to see the asterisk next to it noting it is in my top ten.

Back up to 18.6 although I insist that I am playing the best golf now. :8) The good news is, I have now soft numbers to beat and the next GHIN report is likely stay flat or go down.  If not, 8/15 GHIN is looking good as long as I keep playing my best.  Another good news is that I get another stroke on my next tournament this weekend.

Two steps forward, and one step back, two steps forward and one step back, ....

My goal for 2015 was to keep my index in single digits.  I had a very good 2014, and now that some of the better scores have finally gone out of the computation/ Recently my index has gone from 7.8 to 9.2.  It should be an exciting fall of 2015 to see if I can keep it under 10.  I have only played twice in the last month, but starting Friday, I will be playing 4 times in 6 days. Giddy-up.

Ughhhh.... I was not even paying attention that today was the 15th until I got my handicap revision email.  Still headed the wrong way after 3 revisions.  Up to 30.5 from 30.3.  I am starting to think I should play with just a 9 iron and a putter.

Dropped 1.4 strokes, down to 18.6, thanks largely to the 85 I shot last Saturday.

Stayed at 4.8. I've been playing really consistent lately but I'm hoping to break a low one in the next couple weeks.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.

    • I do not follow amateur or Korn Ferry tour but this story might get me to pay attention. At age 15 to be as accomplished as he is makes me think we may be seeing a future star.  A story of him breaking out may help reinvigorate golf viewership. Miles Russell has a hot start, cools off but finishes with a 68 in first Korn Ferry event Miles Russell, a 15-year-old Jacksonville Beach resident, made his Korn Ferry Tour debut on...
    • Day 8: Indoor backswing work, mostly rehearsals of takeaway. Hit some balls wtih 6-iron working on adding flow, but not too Much which I tend to do, swaying too far away from target.
    • Day 55: 4/18/2024 Got to the range again today. Planned to do my priority pieces and then hit targets with irons. But after my priority pieces I hit a few drives and tugged them all hard left. .... Uh... oh boy.  So, I spent about a half hour trying to hit targets at the range with my driver.
