Pretty big news considering ESPN and NBC has been such an integral part of the Open for so long. I would not be surprised to see next year be Johnny Miller's final year of doing golf (unless they can land another major or he switches networks). Hard to picture Fox doing golf. Is Joe Buck going to be the Booth Announcer?

NBC dropped the NBA, Wimbledon, and now will lose the US Open. So much for the NBC-Golf Channel synergies. I guess it's putting all its money into the Olympics? It all depends on who it chooses for the announcers. I've had enough of Miller, J Roberts, B Costas, the bald guy with the inside scoop, etc. Fox covers MLS which I think isn't bad. I doubt they are going to mix in the news division. I hope not.

Who knows. The PGA Tour is locked down through the end of the decade. The British is locked down for a while, I doubt CBS would give up The Masters without a fight, and CBS has the PGA Championship through 2019. Not sure what other sports NBC could get into. Baseball? Doubt it. Maybe the playoffs if TBS/TNT doesn't re-sign? I suppose they could expand their football coverage, take over for Fox or CBS, but that seems similarly farfetched. They do have the NHL, but that's mostly relegated to NBCSN. Not sure basketball would fit at NBC anymore. But hey, Community was renewed!

Is Harmon coming back? I thought I read that somewhere. I also just learned that NBC bought rights to NASCAR and the Premier League. Not cheap.

I don't care for anything Fox, other than they did a good job with the NFL when they took it over. I think the USGA bought the money. It's tough to blame them.

TGC just pointed out something that I agree with tho ... Usga certainly didn't need to make this announcement today ... A bit rude, I'd agree. They could have saved it for Monday or Tuesday.

Not the first time they've done it.

"The timing was peculiar. It was the second time in five years that the USGA made a major announcement during the PGA Championship — it announced a change in the size and shape of grooves in golf clubs at the 2008 PGA Championship."

This is terrible news.  We'll end up with Joe Buck and either a talking golf ball ala scooter or a glowing golf ball .

I may be in the minority here, but I prefer Joe Buck to Jim Nantz (though it's kinda like saying I prefer the pain of stubbing my toe to a toothache).  Fox didn't mess up when they grabbed the NFL, so I'm sure that this will work....just don't go grab that Chamblee character....can't stomach him.

Sure they messed up the NFL, they have Joe Buck doing games. As bad an Nantz is....Buck makes me want to break my television.

Nantz isn't the problem with CBS. Phil Simms is. I would much rather listen to Aikman. But Joe Buck all around is terrible to listen to. However, I would be very interested in listening to Gus Johnson do some golf commentary. He makes everything so much more exciting.

NBC does a great job with the US Open. I enjoy Miller, and I think Rolfing and Maltbie are two of the best on-course reporters in golf, along with Feherty. I enjoy Gary Koch as well. I guess NBC will still have the Players, Florida swing and FedEx Cup.

As for who would be in the booth, I would not be surprised if Thom Brennaman is the host. He's been rising up the network and is their #1 college football guy. I would also not be surprised if they try and go after Miller to do what Faldo does and do a two-network stint....but let's not forget Miller is getting up there in age and may be ready to hang it up soon. This may be a way for him to go into the sunset. Other options for analyst would probably include David Duval, Tom Watson and Colin Montgomerie, who have some TV experience.

I liked Berman. He was so bad at doing golf it was actually funny and had me laughing. Crazy as it sounds, I actually enjoyed that. I would keep texting my friend all throughout the round about his terrible one-liners. Gonna miss that :(

Aikman and Buck are fine.

Nantz? meh.

Golf? Who knows? I mean who knows golf at Fox?

Some familiar faces with new would be perfect.  Steal Maltbie and/or Feherty away, plug in Duval with Brennaman or someone like Ernie Johnson.

    • Makes sense.  Like I said, I wouldn't have been upset at their original offer either, and based on the fine print it seems like they've held up their end of the deal.
    • If you've only had to adjust retroactively one time in 8 years and have around 5 people each year without handicaps, that's like 40-50 people total so it sounds like you're doing a pretty good job. I think your questions give enough to go off of. This might be a good way to get new people to actually post a few scores during the 6 weeks leading into the first event. Something like "New members will be eligible for tournament money once they have at least 3 posted rounds in GHIN" or something like that. If they can get 3 rounds in prior to their first event, then they're eligible. If not, they'll soon become eligible after an event or two assuming they play a little bit outside of events.
    • This is a loooooong winded narrative so if you don't like long stories, move on. 😉 Our senior club typically gets about 25 new members each year. We lose about 25 members each year for various reasons (moved to FL/AZ, disabled, dead, too expensive). Of the new members, usually 20 have an active GHIN handicap. About 5 each year do not have a GHIN handicap. When they join our club, we give each member a state association membership that includes GHIN handicapping services. We play a series of handicapped tournaments over the summer. When we sign up a new member who does not have a GHIN handicap, we attempt to give them an estimated index until they have sufficient scores posted to have an actual GHIN index.  Our first event typically is around May 15 so, in theory, a new member has about 6 weeks to post a few scores. Posting season in the Mitten starts April 1. Inevitably, several of the unhandicapped individuals seem  to either not play until the first tournament or can't figure out how to enter scores (hey, they are seniors). That situation then leads to my contacting the new member and asking a series of questions: a. Did you ever have a GHIN handicap? If yes, which State and do you recall what it was? b. Do you have an alternate handicap through a non-GHIN handicap service or a league? c. What do you think your average score was last year (for 9 or 18) d. What was your best score last year? Where did you play and which tee was used? e. What do you consider a very good score for yourself? Based on their responses I attempt to give them an index that makes them competitive in the first couple events BUT does not allow them to win their flight in the first couple events. We don't want the new members to finish last and at the same time, we don't want someone with a "20" playing handicap to win the third flight with a net 57. In the event some new member did shoot a net 57, we also advise everyone that we can and will adjust handicaps retroactively when it is clear to us that a member's handicap does not accurately reflect their potential. We don't like to adjust things retroactively and in the 8 years I have chaired the Handicap Committee, we have only done it once. So here are the questions to the mob: Any ideas how to do this better? Any questions one might ask an unhandicapped individual to better estimate their index/handicap? Would it be reasonable to have a new player play once (or more?) without being eligible to place in the money?
