I was just wondering what drills, if any, folks use to practice putting at home.  I've been thinking about buying some artificial turf to put in my basement for putting practice.  Has anyone else done this?  If so, what type of setup do you have, and what kind of drills do you do?

Thanks in advance!

I sort of stumbled on my practice routine by accident. There is an oriental rug in the living room with lines on it. I was trying to roll the ball down the line one night while watching TV and it had about an inch of break to the left. I thought nothing of it because it's an old house and likely not level.

My wife came through about that time and I told her to putt one down the line. I told her it had about an inch of break.

She rolled 2 or 3 balls down the line and not one of them had any break. Then a horrible thought occurred to me. She was simply making a better roll than I was.

After that I went to work rolling the ball down that line with a line around my ball trying to make sure the line on my ball never had any wobble as it rolled.

After many, many nights of practice I consider rolling the ball on my intended line the best part of my game. Now if I miss a putt it's almost always a bad read and almost never a bad roll or starting it off of my line.

Now if I can only develop enough common sense to quit over-reading the break.:doh:

Probably over 90% of my misses are on the high side. Of course part of that is that I HATE to miss on the low side. Nothing worse than putting the ball and knowing it's low and not even getting the thrill of rooting for it.

I putt 25 footers on carpet for about 35 balls.  I use a laser (bought from Home Depot) to line up the ball to target.

I used to practice lag putt/distance control, putting one ball littler further than the previous one for 7 or 8 straight balls.

I practice 10 footer on kitchen floor for touch.

I practice correct swing path by placing two large books and putting through.

From golf fix, I practice putting two balls side by side at the same time.

There's a lot you can do.

At the edge of my den is a low threshold molding where the den carpet meets the foyer hardwood. I try to put 12-15 footers to a spot on the threshold so that they touch or roll up it without enough juice to get over it.

It seemed to me that I was training myself to keep the ball just short of my target.

I have a cheapo 7' roll out putting green with the plastic ball return piece (I plan on replacing this next year).  The main drill I do is this:

I putt three balls from 2 feet out.  If I miss one I finish putting the remaining balls then start over until I make all three in a row.  I then move to 5 feet and repeat the process.  After 5 feet I move to 7 feet.  I came up with this drill to help keep me calm over key putts.

Irons: :nike:Covert 4I - PW

Ball: :nike:One RZN

I have a very similar story.  In our old house we had a plaid game room carpet with a low carpet pile, which seemed to have a perfect speed for the courses that I play.  The plaid lines promoted a smooth straight roll off of the club face.  I loved it, and my putting showed results on the course.

After we moved my wife would not allow me to have plaid carpeting.  I know that my putting has suffered because of it, mostly on the shorter putts.

  • 4 months later...

I drop a coin down, walk 10 feet back and then practice trying to get a ball to either roll over the coin OR to stop near it. What helps is that the lounge floor has breaks in it so its not a truly flat surface so adds a little extra to the practice. Consequently my putting over the last month has improved immensely.

I use the coin drill too. Helps my distance control a lot I also try to locate a simple on the middle of the ball to match the spot on the ground that I can roll the ball too

I used to have a 9 foot practice green with holes in the far end. The dog ate the cupholes cause it liked the foam at the cup end. I bought another one. I couldnt see wasting the old one so I overlapped them and razor cut them together, removing the doggy chewed end. I duct taped them together underneath and have a 16 ft practice area to knock around on.

    • I did read the fine print tonight. It said replace with “similar features & function”.  8 yeas ago my purchase had features that today are available on the lower end models and the current version of my model has more “bells & whistles” than what I got 8 years ago.  So I am thinking they honored the agreement and I can’t argue the offer. since getting a credit for the full purchase price all I am really out over the past 8 years was the cost of the extended warranty, which was less than a low end  treadmill would have cost me. now the question is which model to replace with.  I’ll stay with Nordic Track or I forfeit the $1,463 credit so I will get Nordic Track.  And they honored the warranty and were not hard to work with which is a plus.
    • Generally speaking, extended warranties are a terrible deal and should almost always be avoided. They are a huge profit center for the companies that offer them, which should tell you almost everything you need to know about how much value most consumers get when purchasing them.  This is correct, and the old adage applies - only buy insurance when you can't afford the loss. This usually doesn't apply to most consumer goods.  To your second question, no I don't believe the offer is fair. They are replacing it, but it is not being replaced at "no cost to you". Since the amount being disputed (over $500) is non-trivial, I would probably push the issue. Don't waste your time on the phone with a customer service agent or a supervisor. They have probably given you all they have the authority to do. Rather, I would look at the terms of your agreement and specifically legal disputes. The odds are you probably agreed to binding arbitration in the event of a dispute. The agreement will outline what steps need to be followed, but it will probably look something like this.  1. Mail the Nordic Track legal department outlining your dispute and indicate you are not satisfied with the resolution offered.  2. Open up a case with the AAA (American Arbitration Association), along with the required documentation. 3. Wait about 4-5 weeks for a case to be opened - at which point someone from Nordic Track's legal department will offer to give you the new model at no cost to you.  They certainly don't want to spend the time and energy to fight you over $500. 4. Enjoy your new Nordic Track at no cost to you. I recently entered binding arbitration against a fairly large and well known company that screwed me over and refused to make it right. In my demand letter, I made a pretty sizeable request that included compensation for my time and frustration. Once it hit their legal department, they cut me a check - no questions asked. It was far cheaper to settle with me than to send their legal team to defend them in the arbitration.
    • I never thought of looking at it on multiple purchases like you said.  Yes, the extended may help me on 1 or 2 items but not the other 5 or 6.
    • Day 84 - Forgot to post yesterday, but I did some more chipping/pitching.    Back/neck were feeling better today, so I did a much overdue Stack session.
