  1. 1. Does Furyk's 59 make him a lock for the Golf Hall of Fame?

    • Yes, he goes from borderline to lock.
      6
    • He would have got in anyway
      12
    • No, he still won't get in without winning more tournaments
      12

So what do you think?

Are 16 wins, a US Open, a Fed Ex Cup Championship, $55 M and a 59 enough to secure Furyk a spot in the Hall of Fame?

I say yes, but think it would be a no brainer if he goes on to win today.

Notah Begay shot 59. It was one round. Paul Goydos isnt gonna end up in the Hall of Fame. This question is stupid-Im not even voting in the poll it is so stupid.

"The expert golfer has maximum time to make minimal compensations. The poorer player has minimal time to make maximum compensations." - And no, I'm not Mac. Please do not PM me about it. I just think he is a crazy MFer and we could all use a little more crazy sometimes.

I agree with Phil - one round in a regular or playoff event doesn't change anything in terms of getting in or not getting in. Paul Goydos was mentioned, but David Duval and Chip Beck aren't in the HoF.

I don't think he should get in. 16 wins, 1 major, 1 FECC is borderline to me, and I'm in favor of stricter HoF requirements. I agree with Raymond Floyd on that.

I also agree that this is, uhhhh, I'll go with "an odd question," and I put the over-under on this turning into a rules discussion at about post 17.5.

I think Phil is being unfairly harsh here (way harsher than I've ever seen an unprovoked Shorty), however, he isn't wrong.  One round, especially on a weekday, albeit during a relatively important tournament, is going to mean very little in the grand scheme of things.  A 59 during a major that you go on to win would be a different story.  But on a Friday, in a decent field playoff tournament, is really nothing more than a nice little bit of fluff to add to a resume.

Just look at the list of 6 guys who shot 59.  It has very little bearing on HoF credentials.

To me, shooting a 59 is kind of like a pitcher throwing a no-hitter or a perfect game. Yeah, it's really cool and a great achievement but it doesn't make somebody hall of fame worth.

Since they do not have a 59 or less section at the HOF, then no. I don't think Furyk should be in the HOF.
I don't think 59 makes the golfer. Its great for him, a great round of golf. One round isn't a defining moment for Furyk.

While the 59 is not along with his other stats going to get Furyk into the HOF, a few more wins and maybe another major might do it. As Erik says, the World Golf HOF requirements should be tougher. We talked about this once but Fred Couples is in and he has one major and 15 PGA Tour wins.

59 won't get it done.

Sadly, over the last two seasons Furyk has had the chance to add to his legacy and absolutely lock up a spot in the HOF, but he has failed miserably down the stretch in multiple big spots. Dude can't finish. I feel bad for him but I think his winning days are over.

Did anyone who posted a reply that said 59 does not make him Hall of Fame worthy vote in the poll?  Right now, 5 say it takes him from borderline to a lock, 2 say he would have got in anyway and only 2 of 9 votes say he needs to win more.

I agree that a 59 on its own is not Hall of Fame worthy but Furyk has some similar credentials to Couples who is in the HoF.  He currently ranks #4 on the all time PGA Tour Money list with only Tiger, Phil and Vijay ahead of him.  His 59 was the most dominant of the recent 59s beating the average field score by over 12 strokes compared under 9 to 11 for the most recent 4.

Furyk isn't one of my favorite players, but there have been something like 1.5 million rounds on the PGA Tour and only 6 sub-60.  So he is one of 6 guys in that club, 1 of 4 currently in the $50+ million club, 1 of 5 to win the Fed Ex Cup (with the $10 M bonus not included in his official tour money) and has more PGA Tour wins and the same # of majors as Couples who is in the Hall of Fame.  It is not unreasonable to think he will get strong consideration and his 59 may push him over the top in some peoples minds.

I didn't vote because I need a fourth option ... "I don't follow the Hall of Fame and have no idea how close to Hall of Fame worthy he may or may not be, however, I know that a 59 on Friday of a tournament that he went on to LOSE brings him about 0.01% closer than he already was."

All three choices you gave in the poll required that you actually have an opinion on Furyk's Hall of Fame credentials.  I don't.  I only have an opinion on what a 59 does to those credentials. :)

Now, simply going off of what you added in this post, I guess I would guess that he would get in anyway.  If he has more wins than Couples, and the same number of majors, and a Fedex Cup, then, sure ... why not.  I'll vote him in.  (But the 59 has nothing to do with it) ;)

I guess I didn't vote in the poll because I was afraid I may feel the wrath of Phil McGleno.

I'm with you. I just don't know enough about the Hall of Fame to formulate an opinion.

Color me ignorant, but if Fred Couples is in, shouldn't Jim Furyk?

Without knowing anything about the hall of fame, my guess is that the media and player/fan adoration of Couples gives him a bit of a boost over Furyk.

I could see that.  Jim Furyk seems like he could potentially be the nicest guy in the world.  I have absolutely no idea, I've never met him, and I've never seen anything about him that would lead me to believe he is anything but a good guy.

But for some reason, he just doesn't interest me.  I never root for him, I never care how he does.  He's just ... kinda there.

Maybe its the swing?

Couples was popular and he also has more international (and Champions Tour) wins that Furyk.

Prior to Furyk's 59, I would say that I thought Couples had a better HoF resume than JF, but the 59 (along with his Fed Ex Cup title and high position on the money list) narrows the gap considerably in my mind.

The 59 should be mentioned if he gets inducted into the HOF but it shouldn't have any influence on whether he does or not.  I didn't think Couples deserved to get in, so I would be against Furyk getting in given his current record as well, but I don't get a vote.

I probably don't think like a golfer but I wouldn't put any more weight in a 59 (for Hall of Fame purposes) than I would for some guy going 7 for 7 with 5 home runs in a baseball game.

I would consider both great feats but it would barely figure at all in my opinion of a body of work award like the Hall of Fame.

    • Eh. He broke ONE of Tiger's records. Youngest to be ranked #1 in AJGA. It didn't help that Tiger's birthday is in late December, or that Tiger didn't play many AJGA events before he was 15. Did he do any of these things? TIGER WOODS' AMATEUR VICTORIES YEAR WIN(S) 1984 10-and- under Junior World Golf Championships Boys    1985 10-and- under Junior World Golf Championships Boys    1988 Boy's 11-12 Junior World Golf Championships   1989 Boy's 13-14 Junior World Golf Championships   1990 Boy's 13-14 Junior World Golf Championships, Insurance Youth Golf Classic   1991 U.S. Junior Amateur, Boys 15–17 Junior World Golf Championships, Orange Bowl International Junior Look at some other AJGA Players of the Year. How many of these names do you recognize? A few, for sure. I assure y'all, I'm not trying to pee in your Cheerios. I just don't get what the point is. Okay. I get that, then. Thanks.
    • Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
    • Just stumbled onto the article.  Totally random and thought it might be interested to hear other thoughts. maybe I am tired of all the LIV crap and  this just caught my attention.
    • Day 1: Spent some time hitting some balls. Working on my hips and a “soft” and straight trail arm.
    • Slight digression on the way to my point. Back in the day there were a lot of people who said that Tiger won because of “the Tiger effect” where people pushed too hard and made mistakes trying to catch him and fell by the wayside. I thought that was BS. It was just that he was that much better than them. I don’t think anything has changed my mind on that.    The hype about Miles Russell is very limited. I’ve seen nothing about him outside of some fairly hardcore golf websites. But I think that the reason those people are talking about him is because he is very good. Same as Tiger. And like I said he just broke one of Tiger’s records. That gets hardcore golf fans to pay attention.
