59- Does it Make Jim Furyk a Hall of Fame lock?

I agree with Phil - one round in a regular or playoff event doesn't change anything in terms of getting in or not getting in. Paul Goydos was mentioned, but David Duval and Chip Beck aren't in the HoF.

I don't think he should get in. 16 wins, 1 major, 1 FECC is borderline to me, and I'm in favor of stricter HoF requirements. I agree with Raymond Floyd on that.

I also agree that this is, uhhhh, I'll go with "an odd question," and I put the over-under on this turning into a rules discussion at about post 17.5.

I agree that I would like to see stricter standards shown by the voters, but unfortunately that ship has already sailed.  Halls of Fame are largely self-defining.  While I do not like the standards of the voters, I really can see no way that Furyk should not be in a Hall of Fame that Fred Couples is in.

I don't see the 59 having an effect one way or the other of him getting in or not, but then you never know what the voters will use for criteria, since it is beyond vague.  Let me say, I'm a big Fred Couples fan, he is probably my second favorite golfer, right behind Jack Nicklaus, but I really don't see his body of work HOF material.  I don't really understand why the PGA Tour has a fixed number of wins (20) for a player to have lifetime exemption and the HOF didn't feel that was at least a small criteria for which to base entrance.

Definitely.  I read Al Geiberger's book years ago and he was psyched to shoot the 59, but realized he needed to go out and win the golf tournament after that.

Given that Furyk has been in contention a lot the past few years but hasn't won since 2010, not closing the deal has to be painful (and somewhat diminishes the 59 which was an incredible round).

He's been playing about as good as he can over the past two years, and hasn't won anything.  I believe he has let some great opportunities get away from him.

Of course the other way to look at it is that he's playing great and eventually will take advantage of those opportunities.  But I just don't see him putting himself in contention as often in the future.

I predict the hall of fame committee will induct Furyk not only due to his borderline credentials, but BECAUSE HE DID IT ALL WITH THAT SWING.    Bonus points will be added for that regardless if anyone on the committee admits to it or not... plus it makes a great story.     Furyk with the wonkiest, most home made swing of all time, makes it to hall of fame ... reads well in the annals of time.

The Hall of Fame isn't just for any player who happens to have done well. I would hardly call Furyk a legend of the game.

And people keep crapping on about "that swing".

Every pro alive will tell you that he is great at point of impact.

Seems to me that a lot of people think "Oh wow! He has a shit swing, I have a shit swing" I can become a scratch player!"

I think his point was that shooting 59 is not exactly an indicator of being a Hall-of-Fame worthy player.

I disagree that he'll "rightly so" get into the Hall of Fame. I wouldn't have elected Couples and I wouldn't elect Furyk.

Furyk will make the hall of fame. His wins and longevity on the tour will get him in. We can debate the criteria, but the way that the hall of fame is run currently makes Furyk a shoo-in.

No way he belongs.  You shouldn't be able to make the major league Hall of Fame by restricting most of your play to the AAA minor league.  Especially when you do not validate your AAA records with an occasional major league victory.  Seve played most of his golf in Europe, but he validated his greatness by winning majors.  Monty . . . not so much.

The Golf Hall of Fame has become so watered down, in an attempt to put somebody (anybody) in every year, that it has become a Hall of Longevity. It isn't relevant any more, in view of recent inductees.

Halls of Fame should be reserved for legends of the game, not just for people who stuck around the game for a long time.  Larry Nelson belongs in it; Couples, Montgomery and Furyk (not yet) do not.
