I was just wondering if every one of their stores operates on the same kind of customer service based sales model that the one in Duluth, GA does.  Or maybe it was just the guy who was helping me out...

I went in this morning to try out the 913D2.  After about 15 seconds, he approached me and asked what he could help me find.  I told him and before grabbing a club for me to hit, he asked me several questions about my ball flight, my misses, high launch, low launch...  Then, after getting all the info he needed, he proceeded to grab a few clubs of varying loft with different shafts. Which is what I would expect.  Gave me about five minutes to get loose and then came back.  Also expected.  What I didn't expect was what basically turned into a driver lesson.  After a few swings, he asked if he could give me a tip or two.  Of course I welcomed his advice.  he gets out alignment rods, starts positioning the ball differently in my stance and adjusting my feet.  All this knowing that I wasn't there for a lesson, just to try out a few clubs.  After about 10 minutes of instruction and guidance, I started hitting a more consistent ball.  Then we started changing up the variables of the club.  He probably spent 30 minutes with me in total, ensuring that I had the optimal club for my swing.  I was seriously impressed with this guy.  Needless to say, I bought the club.  I wasn't even sure I was going to purchase anything at all.  Just wanted to give them a look.  We all know how much fun it is to spend money on new clubs.  And, when we were done, I was so excited about the playing my new driver tomorrow.  But also, I was excited about putting the things he showed me into practice as well.  I feel like I got more than I payed for with that visit to PGA Super Store and I will DEFINITELY be going back when it's time to put something else in the bag.

Is this kind of experience the norm, or do I need to ensure I find the same guy every time I go there?

I go to the one in Roswell.  It is hit or miss. Have gotten some great service and have also got the guy who really didn't seem to know the answer to anything.  But overall, it is kinda busy in there.  It can be tough to get help at times.  The guys are hoppin', but there are just a lot of questions to answer.

It might help that I was there about 10 minuted after they opened.  Wasn't a whole lot going on when I walked in.  I did notice that it got way busier in the short time I was there.  So, maybe the trick is to just show up at 9am.

Well, my opinion of that store is now totally blown.  It had to be that I was lucky enough to get a good associate the first time.  I took my wife there the other day to get a full set.  We were there to spend money.  After 45 minutes, the only person I had spoken to was the dude stringing a tennis racquet.  And that was just to ask him where the restroom was.  I counted over a dozen employees who just walked by and said nothing.  One looked right at me and gave me a stupid little grin and just kept going.  Sure, I could have walked around to find someone to help us.  But, I'm not in the searching for salesmen business.  They, however, ARE in the selling business.  But it sure didn't seem like it that day.  I will NEVER go back to that store.  There are plenty of GS and EW stores in the world.  I get service when I to these places.  I was so pissed off.  I didn't even get a word from the four employees, who were standing by the front door, as we walked out.  I guess their conversation about Obamacare was too important to sacrifice a few seconds of time to ensure that a departing customer was well taken care of.  Never again.

Good job, PGASS.  Not that losing my business will put them under or anything.  But if more and more customers continue to have those kind of experiences, they'll put themselves out.  Ridiculous.

Had a similar experience at two of the other Big Box Stores.  At BBS-A would have had to light myself on fire to get anyone to pay attention.  Went to BBS-B and had an experience similar to the OP - what did I want, what did I expect, how was my game, etc. etc.  Walked out with a Titleist 913D2.  First driver I've used regularly in 25+ years (NOT the first one I bought unfortunately) and absolutely love it (much of the time).  Had the same experience again at BBS-A when I stopped to look at new bags.  I was in the neighborhood and thought I'd give them a try since it was close.  Same thing - not a soul looking to help anyone.  At BBS-B salesman put down what he was carrying, helped me and I walked out with a great Sun Country bag (and a new pair of shoes but that's another story).  A lot of it seems to come down to management, training and compensation structure - seems odd that such opposites would happen at the same store.

A few ads in the newspapers advertising the 50% off, and a few emails in the last 2 weeks or so. Sorry, already deleted them.

I believe you are referring to the GolfSmith in Paramus (also on 17). Mostly clothes, lefty clubs and off-name grips left at GS, though I did pick up my Odyssey 2-ball putter for $110, brand new when the sales first started.

I don't think that's the one. Fairly sure the PGA Superstore was where the mail was coming from. I'll keep my eyes open if another one shows.

Very sorry- it IS the Golfsmith that is closing. I just got another email about it. I could have SWORN that the email came from PGA superstore. My bad- sorry to create any mad scrambles or depressed customers. Oh and it's 75% off on stuff!!!!

When and where on Long Island is a PGA Superstore opening? Been a Golfsmith customer for awhile but always walk around in awe when visiting Myrtle Beach superstore.

This should be the experience you or anyone should expect with a consistent swing AND when purchasing a premium driver from any dealer that sells  product ( as opposed to dealers that simply  provide product).  My guess is the guy you were dealing with has had tech rep or professional golf swing analyses training combined with a solid sales back ground.

  • 2 months later...
Checked out the new Westbury, NY location that just opened. It was a nice looking store a lot of hitting bays in the back some instruction bays and a few itemized by manufacturer specific bays. All filled up during my brief visit. Nice size putting green area. It was hard to get a real feel for the place since it was its opening weekend and I wasn't looking to buy anything. Well not really looking. I am looking to trade in my x22 tours for something more forgiving but for whatever reason wasn't really looking today. Anyway I didn't get offered any help by an associate which is fine since I wasn't looking. Hopefully my next visit will be more golf club oriented. I wasn't blown away by the used club area but like I said they just opened. Will find out on my next visit if or where you are able to hit demo clubs or used ones. All in all nice store. A ton of golf goodies. Anyone else check it out this weekend?

I'll wait until after the holidays to check it out.  I was pretty surprised when I received the mailing about it as I had no idea they were putting one on Long Island.  I'm sure it will cut into the Golf Galaxy business that is close by.

    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
    • I agree with @klineka & @DaveP043 above.  When a new member first joins the club they cold be told that they are not eligible for tournaments until they have an established HCP.  As you said, it only takes a few rounds.  If they do not to post HCP that was their choice and choices have consequences.  If playing in the tournament is important to them then they should step up and establish an HCP.  Maybe they miss the 1st tournament, is that a real big deal?  And if it is a "Big Deal" to them then they had the opportunity to establish the HCP. As for not knowing how to report for HCP I assume your club has a pro and they should be able to assist in getting the scores reported and I suspect out of state courses may also have staff that can assist if asked.
