My situation is this, I live in northern Finland and play on a god forgotten course, which luckily is in great shape. Members of this club are all old people who picked up this sport at older age, basically I got none who could help me out over here. Played golf for 2 summers as young kid and took a 9 year break due to committing all my time to other sport and work. I got a spark to start again this summer and man I've had fun, this time I want to improve, which surely will be a rocky road.

For last 2-3 months I've trained quite alot, basically as much as I possibly could after work and stuff, start to feel it in upper back. ^^ I've gotten my striking to ok base, nowhere near where I want it to be tho. Currently I hit slight fades or pretty straight, which I dont mind too much, but having to use that ''or'' word is what I want to remove out of that sentence. My goal is to be able to shape the ball left to right and right to left.

However before going to that road, I need to get my swing to good base and there surely is alot of stuff to work on. Saw my swing for first time on these videos and was quite surprised of how much I was sort of ''tucked' in from my shoulders, that is probably one of the things I need to work on. I hope you can help me out on my journey and post stuff that I should take a look into and start working on.

Thanks in advance, Tepi

Damn you winter, don't come here!

Looks like your hips are a bit faster than the rest of your body. Its causing you to spin out to fast and that will cause the shoulders to dive left through impact, which then draws the hands left slightly, causing a cut. If you look at impact your left leg is nearly straight and fully extended.

Work on keeping flexion in your front leg longer this will allow time for the hands to drop down, and come from the inside.

What can help is flaring your feet out about 20-30 degrees. Do this by bringing your heels in, your stance is wide enough.

Check out this video, but all the videos in that thread are good stuff,

Saevel, I can't thank you enough! I watched my swing in slowmotion and realised how fast my hips were compared to club. Today I went to range and tried out what you suggested, flaring my feet, after two balls it was pretty obvious what was the idea behind it.

I went ahead and took my old stance, because it felt like I would need a hip replacement very soon by flaring my feet. ^^ I started to work on my timing and before the basket was empty I felt the diffrence, my hips and arms were working so much better together. When I hit the ball, I felt that the club was around my right leg by the time my hips shot out.

I don't know is that anywhere right but atleast it turned my fade into a draw and occasional thin shots were gone due to left leg not extending too early. Come this weekend I will work on that timing as much as I can! (Hope it doesn't start snowing :( )

Will try to update this before snow is on the ground if possible.

If I ever come by Dayton, I buy you a meal in restaurant of your choice!

That is strange, unless you are doing  something wrong. If you flair your feet, it should help free your hips up to move. If you look at your first video your back leg doesn't nearly extend as much as it could. I am not saying you need to, but it helps with syncing up the shoulder and hips in the swing more, and getting the hips to turn on the correct angle. I'm not sure if you try to feel like your maintaining flexion in that back leg, but its not something that's advised.

When i first got my hips to turn steeper, i felt a stretch in my lower Lat muscle on my right side (for right hander). I had not pain in the hips.

Check out that thread, read it through before you pass judgement. But,

Ah I got it, ye there was no pain that way, just felt a stretch in my (groin?) area. By flaring my feet, hips actually turn right in my backswing and my right leg goes straight, is this a good thing? All in all, is this a drill to get hips working better or is this something you should stick into, flaring feet to open hips that is?

Guiseppe, it was a 3 iron I think.

If it was a 3 iron, that would allow it to be moved forward a bit, but it still looks like its pretty forward in your stance. I am guessing you don't take a lot of divots and if you miss it you hit it thin or behind the ball slightly?   If you look at your hands at address, they are actually behind the ball; the shaft angle of the clubs should bring your hands slightly ahead of the ball at address (look at pictures of pro golfers and you will see the difference).  Maybe try moving the ball back in your stance just a bit and pay attention to your shaft angle at address?

Ye might have been bit too forward, often times hit 3 from middle of my stance on course, keeps the flight bit lower which I love. Think thin shots were due to my left leg extending too early, yesterday had none when I changed my timing a bit. I believe my angle of attack is pretty close, since when the ball is closer to mid and hit it thin, I still grab a divot just couple centimeters after the ball. Gotta head to practise range before it's too dark, (Will try to film if I catch someone)--->

Well your going to feel a stretch, you haven't used those muscles before. Yes, the smaller muscles of the hip get a work out from the golf swing. They are there to control lateral hip movement and balance.

No, flaring your hips helps with proper rotation. I would recommend just adding it to your swing.

Also, the back leg does not go fully straight, but it does straighten to some degree. For me I don't worry about it, i don't restrict the movement the hip does. Its going to rotate, and the back hip will rotate back and up, and the back leg will loose some of its flex.

  • 3 weeks later...

So, season came to an end 2 weeks ago basically, upper back was hurting pretty bad so couldnt really hit as much as I wanted. Something I will train to make stronger this winter, will be 6 months before we can hit the ball again over here, no indoor facility whatsoever...

Managed to get one guy to film iron and driver swing from last session and this time found out how to edit these for slowmotion (I suck with computers).

Don't really see much change to where I started, but can't expect much for that amount of balls. Didn't flare my feet, but will incorporate it in there next summer. One problem I had with that was I couldn't get my setup facing target when I did it, but that was just due to not being used to it probably.

When I check other peoples swing in slowmotion, I notice their clubhead is in 180 degree angle, the toe pointing to ground, for me it is in 90 degree angle. Is that something to worry about and what is causing it?

  • 9 months later...

Okay, last day of my vacation is about to end, been practising pretty damn much for last month and my game has improved quite a bit. Haven't done so much work when it comes to my swing, but that's the thing I want to focus more on now. Lately been working on building lag and basically using my wrists, never used those before really.

Currently quite lost on what to do next, hope you can help me. Couldn't find any program to get slowmotion on those videos, sorry.

@Tepi

That is a pretty nice swing.  What are you trying to improve the most?

Basically want to work on things that prevent me from having same angle of attack and hitting sweetspot everytime, posture, head movement and so on. Any error and possible drill solution to fix it is welcome. More power throught technique would be welcome also. :)

Big problem I got is playing straight against the wind, what happens is that the ball goes 1/2 the distance of normal and then shoots straight up in the sky, do I generate so much backspin or why can't I get that penetrating ball flight? I have learned to judge the wind pretty well tho, but it feels kinda strange to hit my 220 club from 160. ^^

    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
