What would you do with your wedges?

So, I was looking at my clubs and realized I'm one club short of a full bag (my wife can just keep quiet on that one). I think I need another wedge to fill the gap between the gap wedge in my set and my 56º. The gap is a Nike CCI cast, and as far as I can tell it's at 50º. There is a major yardage gap between it and my 56º.

My delema: The wedges I want (Mizuno) come in 50,52,54,56,58 and 60. Would you, were you in my place, get either a 52 or 54, and have 50-52/4-56, or retire the current 56º and get a set of three matched, evenly spaced wedges, such as 50-54-58?

What if you kept the 50, retired the 56, and bought a 54 and a 58 (or 60)?

I was thinking something like that, I just hate to spend the money on two of them at the same time, lol. I guess I could get the 54, then retire the 56 for a 58 a bit later, and then when I get the new iron set (which won't have an integrated 50º), add the 50.

Which begs a new question. 50-54-58, or 50-54-60?

I would try out a 52 or 54. The SW at least for me is almost exclusively used out if the sand. I have a 51 GW I use for all "utility" shots, chips, green side, etc. My PW (45) is used only for full shots more like a 10-iron if you think of it that way. My point here is you have to find what works for your game. For me 6° between my pitch and gap is no big deal. I'll use the PW for 100-110 and the GW for almost everything else 100 yards in. I also have a 64 I use for extreme flops/up & downs or deep, deep bunkers ~ a few courses that I play are really old and the bunkers have some super deep bunkers. I used to carry two Gap Wedges: 49, 53, the SW57 and the 64 but the 53 was too short and the 49 just kind of sat there. The spacing was equal: PW w/set 45, SpPW 49, GW 53, and SW57 but didn't really work. Now I'm comfortable w/ 45, 51, 57, 64. In my old set of Titleist DCIs my PW was 48 and I had a set of Cleveland BeNi wedges 52, 56, 60 that were really nice but I primary used the PW for "wedge work" and kind of ignored the 52 GW. Now my 51 is my 'go to' wedge and for my game that is what works. Anyway. Try a combo out and I would not worry so much with what loft or what demarcation is stamped on the sole of the club. Test them out, know your distance with said club and how you want to use them. Happy wedging.

I keep a 50, 56 an 60. I also use the 50 for my shots 100 and in. The 60 for shots under 50 and my greenside play. The 56 is mostly for sand. I would suggest picking up a hybrid instead of 4 wedges. But that's just MHO.

50/54/58 is what I like. I have a 58 with 14º of bounce and its great for pitching around the green.

Just get the 54 and have it bent to a 53 - will take about 4 minutes at any golf store or pro shop.

Mizzunos are forged so they are soft and easy to bend. Others are cast - can be bent, but one never knows if they will crack.

Seriously, this is an easy call. Get the one you want, have it adjusted, and enjoy it!

Then, your wife will know that you are not one club short...hope you have enough balls.

Pick up a 60 and bend the 56 to 55 if you feel the need. I do 48-54-60 and love the set-up.

I appreciate the advice. The reason I'm looking at another wedge is that the CCI gap wedge goes about 110 yards, and my Nike 56 goes a max of about 50 if I give it the beans. I've recently been having approaches that were just out of reach of the 56, but I'd have to take a lot off the gap. If I were to get something like another hybrid I can't see it helping my scoring. The longest par 5 I play is 577. Driver, 3hybrid, wedge. The longest par 4 is 291. Driver, wedge or chip. Most of my shots seem to be lost from missing the green, or being too far from the pin.

You might start out and see if you can hit a 60* LW. Some have trouble with a 60*; many tour pros have a 58* as their highest lofted wedge.

Beyond a PW, many golfers carry a 50 - 54 - 58 mix. I carried a 46* iron-set PW, plus 50 - 54 - 58 for about two seasons. I dropped the 54 + 58 for a 56* at start of this season. I just find three wedges easier to manage than four.

A secret on wedges: In numbered irons, normal shaft length differences up and down the set are 1/2". For wedges, these differences often drop to 1/4" or 1/8" depending on model. If loft difference between wedges is only 4*, and shaft length change is only 1/4", the distance gap between the wedges may be closer together than with your irons. Just something to be aware of when planning your new wedge mix.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Depends on how you want to do it. What's your highest lofted non wedge..

For example, mine is a 46 degree. So i would probably go 50 or 52 degree. I don't mind a 6 degree gap, i can work it.

If you have a 48 degree, then your looking at 52, or 54

But you typically want at minimum 4 degrees separation in loft down at the wedges, but you can get away with as high as 6 degrees.

I started with the PW thru GW that came with my G20 set (45, 50, 54 and 58 degrees respectively).  I've experimented with using a 60* lob, but for me it doesn't seem to add any particular value, the 58 seems to do what I need it to quite well.  Not long ago I switched from the G20 lob to a Vokey, still 58/12, and that club seems to really click with me, it is all I use around the green, the others are pretty much "full swing" clubs for when I'm too far out for the lob.  I find that loft mix to work well since I prefer more granularity in close than in the long game, but I think wedge mix is really personal preference.  It has to be what feels right to you.

From what I can tell, my 9 iron is 41º, PW is 45º.

When you guys say three wedges, are you counting the PW? Or three in addition the the PW?

By whatever method, all I want to do is end up with a club that hits that 50 or 60 yard gap between the two wedges I have now.

Gotta agree with Pirate Jim on wedge mix being personal and all about what feels right and what works for you. Some people like to have one "utility" wedge and other wedges for full swings, etc.

You need to check the 56. There should not be a 60 yard gap over 6 degrees. If the 50 is 110 then the 56 should be more like 85-90.

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
