@mentions Now Available on The Sand Trap .com!

37 posts in this topic

If you're on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, you've probably noticed @mentions, and even used them yourself.  These little golden treats help connect you more directly with your fellow site members without having to do anything more than type a post - a post you're likely already leaving in the first place.  Super easy, right?  YES.

With this additional functionality, you might be wondering the best ways to utilize this for your life.  We've got you covered on the following topics:

  1. This is How You Do It
  2. Instant Gratification!
  3. This is How You Use It
  4. But I Don't Want To Know When I'm @mentioned

This is How You Do It

Just like with Facebook and Twitter, @mentions will automatically be triggered in the rich text editor as soon as you type an @.  When you do this, in the rich text editor, you'll see an autocompleting username drop down from which you can select a username.

This will insert an @mention into your post which links to the user's profile.

The @mention itself is a single object so if you backspace over it, the whole thing will be removed from your post.

The @mention is also available in the BB Code editor, through a new editor button, appropriately indicated by the @ symbol.  This button brings up a dialog where you can enter a username.

In BB Code, users can also simply type the tags [@] and [/@] around the username if they prefer.  On submit, this will turn into an @mention.

Instant Gratification!

There's another very important thing that @mentions do - they will send an immediate notification to the user being mentioned.  (You: "Shut the front door - that's awesome!")  They're a great way for users to communicate with each other and page each other in posts.  Huge engagement points.  Just imagine getting paged by a user you know.  That's an email you want to read and a post you want to respond to.  Here's what the email will look like:

This is How You Use It

You can basically @mention wherever you'd like to your heart's desire, but you'll only get notifications of @mentions from posts, reviews, and articles.  So how do you get the most bang for your @mention buck?  Easy peasy.  Here are a few starter points:

  • Reading through a thread and find multiple users you'd like to call out as enlightening and helpful (or perhaps even misinformed)?  Reply as usual and @mention all of those users, letting them know you appreciated their posts.
  • Contributing an article to the site?  Awesome!  If you're including some member quotes from posts, reviews, or any other discussion, @mention them in your article so they're notified of their new celebrity.
  • Sifting through a long thread about a product you're thinking about purchasing, and you know you're fellow user was mulling over the same thing?  Perfect.  Make sure you @mention your buddy so they can get educated, as well.  Even leave some of your favorite member quotes about the product for helpful reading!
  • Have a question for one of the site's Industry Insider members on a current product or future prototype?  Guess what?  You can @mention them and ask some questions (or leave some love!), as long as they're a registered user on the site.

But I Don't Want To Know When I'm @mentioned

For those of you who don't want to know about being mentioned, just go to your user preferences to disable the email notifications.  As with comment notifications and follow notifications, you can change your preference in the Account Details section of your profile.

I didn't get anything ... but it turns out that I had all of my email notifications turned off.  They're back on now so I'll probably be fine @Ernest Jones and @iacas :)

EDIT:  Yup, works now. ;)

Is it possible to have the notification come through "in site" as a PM as well as email? Seems that would be of more immediate value to posters who are currently viewing the site.

Cool feature, it works well.  I just need to change my email to my more current address so I can actually get the notification.

You were on the bounce list so you were unsubscribed. I deleted you from the bounce list.

Can you also implement a similar feature that notifies you when somebody quotes your post?

Pretty sure that already is an option in the notification settings.

    • Finding Value in The Used Club Market
On Craigslist around Phoenix we used to see loads of irons in the early part season because people would buy clubs they can't hit *cough* blades *cough*, or just clubs that weren't fitted or they didn't like and then sell them. That's how I got my nikes before they were stolen.   I don't buy into the new distance drivers and such, but the forgiveness is definitely a major improvement. I take my old Wooden Woods to the range every once in a while and not only do misfits cause massive distance loss, they just fly horrible as well. The new stuff is definitely helpful to worse players but if Ben hogan could drive a wooden club over 300 then why is it so impressive to driver a super forgiving driver over 300? idk, just my $0.02
    • Injury Question
With my insurance I can't afford a MRI.  I got one for my rotator cuff a 2 years ago and my insurance only paid $80 of the bill .  I'm still paying the bill since its either pay off it quickly and struggle with my school loans or pay it off slowly and pump more money into those things I used for school.  Without an MRI, I'm not sure how much help a doctor would be able to give me.
    • How to eliminate blowup holes
Everyone gets double bogeys. Even the pros. The pros just don't get them often.  We all have blow up holes. Mine tend to come in pairs. Then I'll settle down and hit "the shot." I consider an 8 a blow up hole. It's usually the result of a bad tee shot. Although on a real fast green once it was the result of a four putt.... in a tournament.... when I missed a 1 foot putt. Another thing we tend to do is try to do quick fixes during our rounds. Don't. They don't work. Play with the game you have. Fix your problem at the driving range later. If your driver is in the woods constantly, leave it in the bag for the round, and practice with it on the range. Hit an iron off the tee if you need to keep the ball in play.
    • Injury Question
Okay, so this isn't exactly something recent.  In fact its something I did in August, that seems like it just doesn't want to heal completely. The injury in question occurred on my downswing on August 7th, it felt as those I pulled every muscle from underneath my arm pit to the bottom of my ribs.  I gingerly tried a few swings after that and why it was tender I guess endorphins got me through the rest of the round (2 holes).  I probably should have taken a few weeks off to let everything heal after this, but seeing how I had lost 70lbs over the course of 4 months and would go onto lose 130+ lbs by October (mostly through golf) I was kind of blinded by the motivation to keep pushing myself.  I played with severe discomfort for a couple of weeks, and then it kind of faded though it felt tight to make a reaching movement with my left arm. Now months later, the pain is basically gone when it comes to golf, but every now and again if I do some unknown action with my swing I get what feels like popping sensation and the discomfort comes back for that swing.  The tightness when reaching never really went away either.  Most of the time it isn't a problem, its just something that occasionally bothers me and I was wondering if anyone has had something similar?  I'm currently trying to strengthen the muscles around that area to see if responds to what eventually got me over a partially torn rotator cuff.
