See post #15 Nike Covert Tour 2.0, it's not listed as a proto though.

By "proto" I just meant "pre-release." Guess I should read the whole thread next time. ;-)

why is Tigs not playing in this???

Because he doesn't need to. Ranked 2 in the money list, so will definitely qualify.

A lot of the people competing this weekend are doing it to get into the top money ranks

WGC event = no appearance fee, unlike the Euro Tour event next week in Turkey which he is playing in.

The turkey event next week is really promoting it on golf channel. It seems that commercial comes on every hour and its highlights of nothing but tiger woods :(

That would be an apt summation of the field Tiger's going up against in Turkey. It would be an embarrassment if he doesn't win by six strokes.

I fell asleep on the couch last night watching the start of the third round. I woke up when DJ was making the turn and he was 18 under after shooting 30 on the front, and he had a six shot lead.

II was very surprised to see that he was still 18 under when I checked the scores this morning, with a few guys within hailing distance.

D.J. made a couple of boo boo's..Yet when interviewed, he just took it in stride.

Sounds like DJ to me.

Ian Poulter's hair is scaring me. He may win, but I will fear for my safety as he is doing so.

Johnson wins with -24. Poulter at 2nd with -21, GMac in at -20. Sergio follows. Johnson pushed the others off the table  with a long iron (260 yrd off the tee)  at 16, then chipped in for eagle.

I just couldn't stay awake for any of the rounds but I did catch bits and pieces. Hard to really develop any allegiance to DJ, just too damn dopey looking, but you can't argue with a man that post a -24 on the tourney.

Yours in earnest, Jason.

Does anybody else find it entertaining hearing some of the Chinese fans reaction after a good shot? lol

Do you mean polite, respectful, and engaged as good fans?

(not yelling stupid crap and dumping beer on each other and being obnoxious like in the US and Europe?)

Yeah - it's entertaining.  They really seem to be appreciating good shots.

What there some kind of moisture in the air, or was that smog? I didn't see any clouds, just grey everywhere. I don't know if I'd want to spend a week there.

It looks like a breeze winning by 3 but from reports it was tied going down to the last 3 holes where DJ eagled and birded 16 and 17 to get back into the lead.

One of the announcers mention that the air quality was listed as "unhealthy". Considering that a recent LPGA tournament was delayed due to smog with several of the players wearing surgical face masks while playing, I would guess that the general air quality in China is terrible. When you watch tournaments from China, you never seem to see the sun or any shadows.  No EPA air quality restrictions, just burn whatever you want and crank out the cheap goods for export. I would not be surprised to see plenty of lung and respiratory disease among the Chinese population in the near future. And plenty of them still smoke!

    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
    • Very much so. I think the intimidation factor that a lot of people feel playing against someone who's actually very good is significant. I know that Winged Foot pride themselves on the strength of the club. I think they have something like 40-50 players who are plus something. Club championships there are pretty competitive. Can't imagine Oakmont isn't similar. The more I think about this, the more likely it seems that this club is legit. Winning also breeds confidence and I'm sure the other clubs when they play this one are expecting to lose - that can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
    • Ah ok I misunderstood. But you did bring to light an oversight on my part.
    • I was agreeing with you/jumping off from there.
