So, this was the first year that I really played golf consistently.  Got hooked at the end of last year playing a couple of times and then played roughly 40 rounds this year.

I absolutely love this game but now that it's getting cold in the northeast, I'm wondering what people do once golf courses are closed.  I feel like I've made strides and would like to not regress.

The only thing I can really think of is putting indoors.

So, what do you do?

I'm on the exact same ship as you ..Played golf consistently for the last 3 months made minor improvements but now... with it being winter wondering how can i keep it going .. Is it worth playing on the winter greens etc

I play until there is snow on the ground or the greens freeze solid.  Then I throw the bag and shoes in the basement until March.  Once the weather changes I then try to figure out which end of the club to hold.

Courses along the east coast often stay open year round.  Make some trips to NJ and play.

Courses are open all year here. However it gets to a point where playability is bad enough it isn't worth it. Chances are you have some indoor facilities in your area. I'm not crazy about sims but booking an hour in a stall is worthwhile. My favorite place here has video stalls and a sizeable putting green. If you have a PGA SS I've seen people hitting balls in there.

A cheap putting green is nice for practicing at home. I use mine year round. Every morning after my workout I putt until I make 18 4 footers in a row. Start over if I miss. I know I won't make many 18 foot putts but missing the short putts is a score killer. Though I do more slo-mo swings and drills in my basement than anything. Heck I do it in my office.

Yeah, I live in Albany, NY and from what I understand, golf courses stay open until it snows.

The only other thing that comes to mind that I can work on is flexibility.

An exercise program to work on flexibility and core muscles can't hurt.  If you've got room in a basement or garage you could think about getting a mat and a hitting net.

Here in SW Ohio we have a few courses that stay open on a weather permitting basis. My area is fortunate enough to have a range with heated tees as well.

Once in a while we'll get a decent day even in January or February. The one thing I really struggle with in the winter is the low sun. It's just a real pain to find the ball sometimes.

Yeah, there has to be someone out here that has a workout regime that focuses on flexibility and core muscles.

Unfortunately, I don't think my basement is high enough to swing a club.

And the garage is cold - haha.

But I like the idea of a mat and hitting net!

Hitting net in basement. Actually it's an old sheet and I use foam golfballs. My ceiling is a little low so I general practice with an 8iron with a punchy 3/4 follow through. It's better than nothing and I use video frequently to check very specific pieces of my swing. Hoping to not regress this winter, actually hoping to improve this winter which should be very doable thanks to Evolvr showing me how to prioritize and what to look for when analyzing my own swing.

Mat and net in the garage (and a heater) - room enough for my mid irons.  The entry carpet is perfect speed for putting and the other carpet is very slow (so I get to putt harder and see if I can maintain my line).

Also joined an indoor place just now where we can hit (there's about 30 yards of flight before the net - better than my garage) and putt and do short game and even workout.  They have Trackmans (Trackmen?) also.

For those of you who have nets, do you use real golf balls or plastic ones?

real golf balls, do a search on indoor ranges, indoor nets, indoor golf, home practice, etc etc etc.  Lots of cheap and easy setups.

Yep. World class instructors in an affordable format. Real balls are obviously the best but I had to compromise with the wife so I use the closed cell foam balls. The good ones are Almost Golf Balls or the Callaway Hex Practice foam balls. I cheaped out last time and just bought the Golftown branded ones at about a third of the price, they were fine too. One advantage to the foam balls is I just hung an old sheet to hit into and saved the cost of a net.

I've read about the Rukk Net Pop-Up being pretty good but a bit expensive.

I heard the The Callaway Tri-Ball is also good and seems a bit more in my price range.

In northern Maine our season has been over for a few weeks and won't start up till late May, hopefully a little sooner depending on the winter. In years past I just putt over the winter but the high school golf team wanted to fund raise for an Opti Shot and we just bought it a couple of weeks ago so that will be my winter playing, the benefits of being the coach..lol. It will definitely make the winter go by a little quicker.

For several years I had a device with four bungee cords that attached to the bottom and top of a door. I could hook it to the top and use either 1,2,3, or 4 bungee cords attached to a handle and make sets of simulated golf swings with it.

It was a very good golf exercise for all of the muscles involved in a golf swing.

Unfortunately the cords finally wore out and I haven't been able to find another one like it. This winter I will probably make something similar out of some bungee cord.

    • Have you looked at Model Local Rule F-9 Relief from Tree Roots in or Close to Fairway?  You could extend this to cover exposed rocks.  The rule is recommended to be used only for areas relatively near the fairway, a player who hits a shot 20 yards in the woods doesn't really deserve relief.   Players can always take Unplayable Ball relief, they're not required to play it from a rock or a root.  Of course, they hate to take the penalty stroke too.
    • I agree with @klineka, you're clearly doing something right.  Its always going to be a bit of a guessing game if you don't have any scoring history.  On the other hand, understanding that it takes only 54 holes to establish an actual handicap, and they have about 6 weeks in which to play and post enough scores, I don't think its at all unreasonable to require them to have an official handicap before they become eligible for prizes.  I don't know how you structure the fees for the series of competitions, but if its possible they'll play with the group without being eligible for prizes, you could consider a way to let them do that without contributing to the prize pool.
    • I run tournaments and want to put in a local rule that allows relief from tree roots and rocks that are not loose impediments. We have some really terrible lies in some of our courses in my area and nobody is getting paid enough to break clubs. Let me know if you think the verbage for this rule makes sense. Local Rule Roots and Rocks You may move your ball from a tree root or buried rock one club length for free relief no closer to the hole. However you may not use this rule to get relief from a tree, bush, boulder, or other foliage hindering your swing. Your only option here is to play it as it lies or take an unplayable for a one stroke penalty.
    • Makes sense.  Like I said, I wouldn't have been upset at their original offer either, and based on the fine print it seems like they've held up their end of the deal.
    • If you've only had to adjust retroactively one time in 8 years and have around 5 people each year without handicaps, that's like 40-50 people total so it sounds like you're doing a pretty good job. I think your questions give enough to go off of. This might be a good way to get new people to actually post a few scores during the 6 weeks leading into the first event. Something like "New members will be eligible for tournament money once they have at least 3 posted rounds in GHIN" or something like that. If they can get 3 rounds in prior to their first event, then they're eligible. If not, they'll soon become eligible after an event or two assuming they play a little bit outside of events.
