Jakester:
Honestly, 2 or more years ago I must admit that after / during any one single, first blow up hole of the round I would lose my cool / focus - BUT being more experienced now and playing a lot more golf - I have had situations where I have gone: blowup hole +4/+5, followed by birdie, par, par, bogey, par (or something similar). In other words, a blowup hole / couple bad shots do not ruin my round or put me into a slump at first because im very well aware I can recover and often times I do recover... WHERE I DO start getting angry losing focus is after 2-3 blow up holes, maybe with a few double bogeys mixed in...that point is usually when there is 4-6 holes left and I realize if I do not birdie / par all of them, I will not be low 90s maybe breaking 90....Don't get me wrong, honestly I still play the remaining holes as best as I can - and usually end up with 98-107. I do totally agree with your thought about not being comfortable over the ball, I get that feeling sometimes and still swing usually resulting in a poor shot.

Tees2Trees:
Yup, exactly - flashes of GREAT golf followed by terrible misses / mishits.
I will say I do not go to the range often (1 time a week if lucky)...I usually try to get to the course early and spend 45 mins on the range + an hour chipping / putting. Perhaps more range time during the week would help? There is many weeks where im only swinging a club on Saturday / Sunday...the days I play. I probably should be fitted for equipment as right now I am playing titleist blades...and probably should not be. I am only playing them because they were given to me and cost me $0...have been using them for 3.5 years. I am wondering if I might find more consistency using forged and/or cavity backs? However the irons are not my main problem. I would say without a doubt, my problem is the driver, 5 wood, 3 wood...basically getting off the tee. I know so many people who have improved their scores by tossing the driver and just taking 3-5 wood off the tee, but I am just as bad / inconsistent with my woods as with my driver!! I actually may be a little more consistent with my driver! So that does not really help me (getting rid of driver). My miss is a HUGE slice. It's so painful and demoralizing when I see that shot come off my club. Thanks for your helpful input.

Wardy:
(see above in my response to Jakester). And honestly, I would never quit. I should not have even said that. I had just got done with a terrible round...I think I was just trying to emphasize how frustrated I am w/ the game.

plum:

Yup, as I mention above my driver and woods are all over the place - its a mess. When I do hit a solid drive I am easily carrying 275-285. But when I miss it...forget it. Thats great your 3 wood works much more consistent then driver...but like I said I miss bad with woods just as if not more often then driver.

Those blowups come from allowing mistakes to compound.  I'm guilty of it too.... I'm that guy that shoots 89 in a tournament with a 13 on a par 4 (happened this year).

The trick is to not let one bad shot lead to another.  Take each shot as an individual event.  It's a helluva lot harder than it sounds, but if you can learn to do that, the blowups that used to be +5's will suddenly be +2's instead.

Another tip that I've found works for me is playing the course in 3 hole segments.  Don't worry about what you are scoring for the 9 or the 18... but instead focus on playing 3 solid holes at a time.  Let's say you start with 3 pars... you were even par for that 3 holes.  The clock resets, and now you have a new 3 holes to try to shoot even par on.  The good thing about this method is, it almost forces you to take it 1 hole at a time rather than thinking about how that sliced tee shot is ruining your round.

I look at this entirely different, I'm just glad that my entire round was not a series of blowup holes. :-)

That also still happens to me. :8) , but less so with each lesson.

    • Hitting some good shots on my golf trip. It's good I can tell when I hit better shots the way I want to swing the ball versus when I use an older swing. Shockingly, the short game has been at worst, not harmful to my game. I am using similar feels to the full swing, in that I try to get my hands down. I've been nipping the ball clean off the turf.
    • I was laid off two months ago. Good severance, a 90 day layoff announcement regulation the company wanted to avoid so technically I'm still on the payroll for a few weeks, and a bunch of banked PTO, so I'm in a great spot and working on a startup idea I've been batting around with my brother for a while. That means I've got time to get to the gym! I'm at like 60-75 minutes 5x a week of strength training, and either a run or a bunch of time playing soccer or tennis with my daughter on the weekends. Stronger than I've been in forever. Up ~5 pounds of (noticeable!) muscle!
    • Do you have examples of exceptional scores versus their established handicap indexes?
    • Day 539, April 23, 2024 Mirror work once again. When I get back to swings, I'll just do it A. LOT.
