Purchasing a new set of Callaway X-20's and wanted to know which configuration makes more sense? I plan on also purchasing a Driver and 5W but would have nothing between 5W and 4I.

Any thoughts/feedback would be appreciated.

My personal preference is the always get the sets with the 3-PW. The reason for this is that I don't usually like the sandwedges included. Although keep in mind that you will have to buy a sand wedge (and gap wedge and lob wedge if you are like me).

IMO, you should hit some stand alone wedges, as well as the included X-20 wedge, see which one you like better.

I would take the 3-PW and then get a set of Vokey wedges.

I would get 4-PW, a hybrid, and some Vokey wedges. Or 5-PW and two hybrids.

custom order your set and take away the 3 iron... save you some cash. then pick up a hybrid, which loft depends on what you realistically seeing yourself needing... ie what you are comfortable hitting, whether your intention is to take the club off the tee or off the deck.

I'm regretting not having gotten 3-PW. I like to take a 3 iron off the tee on some doglegs.

i hear what others are saying about using the 3 iron for tee shots, but fairway woods and hybrids these days are so much more effective for just about everyone. i can sting a 5wood just as well as a 3 iron off the tee. from the turf, a 3 iron is much tougher than a hybrid or FW.

I agree. I ordered my irons from Golfsmith.com and was able to get 5-PW. I'm not good with my long irons and have two hybrids which I use in place of the 3 and 4 irons.

If you got the 3-PW, would you actually use the 3 iron? A 3 iron is pretty difficult to use unless you're pretty good and comfortable with them. I traded in my Callaway X-18 3 iron since I'd rather tee off with my TM Rescue Mid #3. Heck, I'm seeing more game improvement clubs replace the 3 & 4 irons with hybrids. If the SW is nice in the set, I say go for the 4-SW.

Forget the set buy indvidual irons 6-PW.

Get 1 Driver
1 Fairway Wood - 3 wood or 4 wood no larger than 170-180 cc so you can hit it off the fairway, light rough and off the tee. Large than that makes it hard to hit out of the rough.
3 Hybrids to replace 3, 4, & 5 irons
5 Irons 6, 7, 8, 9, & PW
3 wedges 52, 56, & 60 are popular but get what you want for distance and don't forget to pay attention to bounce. On wedge usually 56 with bounce in 12- 14 range for sand. The other wedges should be lower bounce if you play firm conditions, such as 4-8 bounce. Some player are droping their PW for a 46 or 47 degree fourth wedge.
1 great putter - make sure it fits you and your eye really well you'll make most of your strokes with this club. The most important club to get fitted.

Remember even the pro's are replacing their long irons you really have to on your game to hit a 3 - 4 and sometimes even a 5 wood consistently. Forget the macho look long irons and cut strokes buy the hybrids and score lower.

And the best urthane cover ball you can afford to loose.

Keep it in the fairway

buy 4-PW and buy some good wedges. (that's what I did)
I also got a hybrid to replace the 3 iron. For most the hybrid is a lot easier to hit than the long irons.....suggest you test out the hybrid and a 3 iron and see which feels more natural or comfortable and go with that

I would buy what works for you :)

Definitely try the SW from the set and see if it is one you want to use, if not then if you don't want a 3 iron, just order 4-PW or 5-PW.

If you like using your long irons, then order 3-PW.

For me, my previous set of irons, I ordered 5-PW and I regretted it. As I have gotten better with my longer irons, there are courses that I would have liked to have a 4 iron or a 3 iron in my bag.

My latest set of irons I picked up 3-PW and I also picked up the 2 iron. Do I carry it that often, no. My usually set is a 3 hybrid, a 4 hybrid, and a 4 iron. But depending on the course and conditions, I may only carry irons, or I may drop my 4 iron and replace it with my 2 hybrid.

Basically figure out what works for you based on what you like to hit/play and order accordingly :)

PJ, I think its a 3-pw or 4-aw or gap wedge combo. When I bought my X-20's I went with the 4-aw. The gap wedge is 50 degrees of loft. If you hit a 3 iron solid then go with the 3-pw combo then you can get a gap and sand wedge down the road. I find the pitching wedge and gap wedge a little big for shots around the green. I prefer forged wedges. I'm gonna pick up a 3 hybrid later on in the year.

Definately 3-PW for me

I had a hybrid for 6 months before giving it to my wife. Could not stop hooking it and now have a 3 iron back in the bag and can hit it low, long and straight almost every time.

I have the X-20's and I went with 4-9, PW, SW, AW all X20's and I love them. That left room for two hybrids but I went with Nickents.

    • Makes sense.  Like I said, I wouldn't have been upset at their original offer either, and based on the fine print it seems like they've held up their end of the deal.
    • If you've only had to adjust retroactively one time in 8 years and have around 5 people each year without handicaps, that's like 40-50 people total so it sounds like you're doing a pretty good job. I think your questions give enough to go off of. This might be a good way to get new people to actually post a few scores during the 6 weeks leading into the first event. Something like "New members will be eligible for tournament money once they have at least 3 posted rounds in GHIN" or something like that. If they can get 3 rounds in prior to their first event, then they're eligible. If not, they'll soon become eligible after an event or two assuming they play a little bit outside of events.
    • This is a loooooong winded narrative so if you don't like long stories, move on. 😉 Our senior club typically gets about 25 new members each year. We lose about 25 members each year for various reasons (moved to FL/AZ, disabled, dead, too expensive). Of the new members, usually 20 have an active GHIN handicap. About 5 each year do not have a GHIN handicap. When they join our club, we give each member a state association membership that includes GHIN handicapping services. We play a series of handicapped tournaments over the summer. When we sign up a new member who does not have a GHIN handicap, we attempt to give them an estimated index until they have sufficient scores posted to have an actual GHIN index.  Our first event typically is around May 15 so, in theory, a new member has about 6 weeks to post a few scores. Posting season in the Mitten starts April 1. Inevitably, several of the unhandicapped individuals seem  to either not play until the first tournament or can't figure out how to enter scores (hey, they are seniors). That situation then leads to my contacting the new member and asking a series of questions: a. Did you ever have a GHIN handicap? If yes, which State and do you recall what it was? b. Do you have an alternate handicap through a non-GHIN handicap service or a league? c. What do you think your average score was last year (for 9 or 18) d. What was your best score last year? Where did you play and which tee was used? e. What do you consider a very good score for yourself? Based on their responses I attempt to give them an index that makes them competitive in the first couple events BUT does not allow them to win their flight in the first couple events. We don't want the new members to finish last and at the same time, we don't want someone with a "20" playing handicap to win the third flight with a net 57. In the event some new member did shoot a net 57, we also advise everyone that we can and will adjust handicaps retroactively when it is clear to us that a member's handicap does not accurately reflect their potential. We don't like to adjust things retroactively and in the 8 years I have chaired the Handicap Committee, we have only done it once. So here are the questions to the mob: Any ideas how to do this better? Any questions one might ask an unhandicapped individual to better estimate their index/handicap? Would it be reasonable to have a new player play once (or more?) without being eligible to place in the money?
