How many are trying out? They usually 6 for matches so they throw away 1 score.

They actually play 5 players in Invitation and Conference tournaments, with 4 from each team competing at Regionals and State. In each tournament the highest score from the team is dropped, called the "trash score" by my team and others in Colorado (our team takes it far enough that the person with the trash score gets to take all the trash from the day at the end).

Varsity teams usually are composed of 6 players, 5 for any given conference tournament with one backup, only 4 of which can go to the regional tournament to qualify for the state championship.

If there are only 4 good players that score better than you, you have a good shot at making Varsity. I've actually found it beneficial to me to be on a team where I had to work to try and make Varsity (my school has placed top two in state for the past five years) as it really motivated me to work hard and improve. Sadly there are four seniors graduating before next year, my senior year, and there is only one other player currently on my team who shoots in the 70's. Our coach and that player, along with me, have been working on trying to recruit some players to put together another decent team next year though so hopefully it works out for us.

Thanks for all that info, I'll keep it all in mind. Yeah, we'll see what happens in the spring.. all I could really tell was there was only 4, maybe only 3, golfers who could out shoot me.. but there's two golfers who I know that are going to be the stars of the team, and another who may linger behind them. I think, at this rate if I get my nerves down which I think I will by Spring, I can compete with those two.

Tryouts should be in January and February, but no pressure. Just join a club if you don't make the cut this time around.

Yeah, and JGANC has a lot of tournaments I can get experience in. However, I really want to make the team.. sporting the team polos and bag would be swagalicious. We'll see.. I look forward to it. I know I can do it, I have the skill.. I just need to commit, which is my biggest problem. whenever I commit, I hit great shots after great shots.. but I seem to hold back sometimes when people are watching. I'll get over it.

Given the amount of time you spend to it, I have confidence you will make it.

I'm middle aged (or getting there), and practice daily to lose weight and keep fit. I got some good instruction from this site, and am now hitting "pretty good". By February, I should be playing some "pretty okay" golf, and you should be playing some outstanding golf.

Good luck making the cut. Just keep up the enthusiasm!

Thanks a lot man, means a ton. I'll surely keep up the work, and love to discuss the game of golf here.

Golf is as much mental as it is physical.  Sometimes when you push too hard you see results like you had with your parents.  You can't simulate tryout or tournament conditions on your own, your brain knows it's not real and you won't get the release of adrenaline like you would during a real tournament.

The guys you're competing against might have been playing longer and have a mental advantage so don't ignore that aspect of your game.

Thoughts on my new swing? The finish isn't that good, but I'll fix it -- I'm coming over from baseball and still have the low finish.

Anyway, thoughts?

My one thought to you is that perhaps you should decide whether you want to play baseball or golf more. I noticed a large improvement when I quit playing baseball (fewer thin shots) just because the two swings get along poorly. I still will play it, but I actually bat lefty now so that I don't mess with my golf swing. However, it really is not my business to get into your personal life and tell you to quite a sport you love, because I know how hard that can be.

Notes on the video is that it appears as though your bottom hand may be a little strong but not enough to worry about at all. The other thing was that your hands appear to be really close to your body at address, which can lead to inconsistent contact (second shot sounded a tad bit fat and the third a bit thin with you shaking your hand like it stung) at least for me. A down the line video might be a good addition for others to see your swingplane in the swing.

Driving range will be open Wednesday. I'll work on a better finish etc. I don't think that swing is as good at it usually is. My back was sore during those swings, we'll see what happens Weds.

You may want to slow down a little, even though your young you could be overworking some muscles and ligaments more than they are used to with a golf swing you are new to. It's winter and I know the temps are not getting out of the 40's down here in the bay area I gotta figure your probably 10 degres colder up there.

you have some lateral head movement, forward towards the target on the backswing, and then on the downswing your head moves back and down.  its tough to make and time consistent contact by doing this.  its something i struggle with, altho i rarely get my head back.

Yes there is probably too much head movement, I also see a grip that's too strong (baseball) got to work that out over time, the movement almost looks like he's forcing himself to bend more at the knees at the takeaway ala Tiger and then get that "pop" straightening up move at contact, however I'm not sure Tiger does it like that and even if he does it's probably way more subtle, Kelzzy I think you may want to try just a bit more narrow stance and keep things more steady below the waist. Just try to be more relaxed over the ball and during the swing.

    • Day 12: Same as last couple days, but focus was on recentering aspect of flow. When I recenter earlier I make decent contact most swings but if I recenter late or not at all it’s a roll of the dice.
    • A couple of things.  Some of the clubs in your bag should be dropped immediately.  A 2-iron for example with what obviously seems to be a lower swing speed or possibly not great swing yet is a definite no-no.  To be hitting that 120-140 yards, which I assume includes run, is a sign that you are not getting the ball airborne at the correct angle to maximise distance.  The reason your 3 and 5 hybrid are going the same distance is that your launch angle is better with the 5.  Loft is your friend. Ideally I would suggest going to a golf or sporting store where you can hit golf balls on a simulator without being disturbed to understand your club carry distances and hopefully swing speed.  With that information we can definitely guide you better.
    • Let us be clear, unless you have proof of cheating, you just sound like a case of sour grapes.  In our club we have a guy who won club titles for many years.  Yes, he was a low single digit handicapper, but there have been quite a few others who played at his level.  Yet his mental strength and experience helped him win in many years when he shouldn't have.  Did he sandbag.  DEFINITELY NOT.  Did he just minimize his mistakes and pull out shots as and when needed.  Definitely.
    • Day 111 - Worked on my grip and higher hands in the backswing. Full swings with the PRGR.
    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.
