Not really despite the snow it's nice enough to play today. I am banged up or I'd get out there no doubt the courses are empty.

Just looked at the website for the course I'm playing (Common Ground), and I might be the only tee time all day :-$ Should mean a nice 2.5-3 hour round with a lot of time to do other things tomorrow.

Florida, Nevada, and Arizona are calling gentlemen.  Plan a vacation, snowbird it, hell, plan your retirement if you can and move.  Do whatever you gotta do, Ill be golfing.  It will be a bit chilly in January and February here but we won't have any snow.

I do dislike the limited amount of daylight, that is depressing to me, but getting back into the gym helps.  Pool was closed for renovations on Tuesday but should be good to go today, gonna do some HIIT in there, swim some fast laps and get the endorphins rushing a bit.

I wish, but I'm 28, so I'm not going to be moving to any of those 3 for a while. I am going to San Diego over New Years; already have a tee time at Torrey Pines.

There is one course still open here in Northern Michigan.  It's short and easy -- not my favourite.  However, at least I can still swing my clubs.  Got above 50 today with a lot of wind.  Next time I can get out is Wednesday and it looks good.

It's a short, sweet time of year here in Ohio.

We're still hitting highs in the 50s. That makes it plenty warm enough for me, but it keeps a lot of people off the course. Even with a shortage of daylight, I managed to deal with the leaves at my mum's place and still play 18 before the sun dropped. A 2-hour 15-minute round on foot and it wasn't because I was hitting them well either.

Played 28 holes Saturday, was going to get in another 18 Sunday but the wind chased me off... Weather is stiffening up the joints though...that and the 52 layers of clothing...

What part of Northern Michigan @JBailey? I'm in Mesick and just played at Caberfae Peaks on Sunday.

I'm just outside of East Jordan.  The course that's open is just south of Petoskey.

  • 4 weeks later...

I played golf this afternoon... in December...in Northern Michigan.

I pulled into a full parking lot at my course today. But instead of golf, they were there because one of the ski slopes was open. While putting my golf spikes on and getting my bag onto the push cart, everyone else is getting skiing and snowboarding stuff together. Kind of weird.

But it was a really nice day for golf - upper 30's lower 40's. There was at least one other group out there.

Can't we rename this the Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) thread?

OR the Off-Season Training Thread

for those with an off-season. In TX, we have off-season weeks - a flood hits, a winter snow lasts a week, it might get in the 20's-30's for a couple of weeks. Otherwise, game on.

Here it is December 9th in the Northern part of New York State and I'm still getting out and playing golf. The weather today was around 60 degrees so I got out and played 9 holes as did a good many of other golfers. The course looks in really good shape and the grass is nice and green which is quite unusual for this time of the year in this location. Looks like the nice weather is gonna continue for some time.

I'm Dreaming Of A Green Christmas, just like the ones I never knew.

I shouldn't be posting here, but what the hell.  Just booked 18 at the Quarry Course at Black Diamond Ranch for Dec 28th.  It's risky playing in Dec and Jan here because it might get into the 50's or 60's sometimes.  That's pretty cold for my thin blood.

Looks like a great end of week weather wise.  Hoping to get rounds in Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  Our local weatherman must have been feeling a bit Grinchy as he stated that usually when we have nice weather like this in December we pay for it in March and April.  I hope he's wrong.

Been struggling the last few weeks to get out for a game. Course has been closed due to rain. Course must be flooded in parts.

Just got new clubs and only had one 9 hole round with them. Hopefully this weekend i'll get out but not looking likely.

Need to get a few games on link course start of the new year, maybe a trip to Gullane or North Berwick.

Not planning on playing much this winter, more practice than playing. I was out last Sunday. Frozen greens and silly playing conditions wasn't fun.

My score wasn't representative of how I played. I hit a wedge on a par 5, full swing that landed about 3' from the hole.  It bounced about 15' back up and backwards and rolled to the rear fringe leaving a 80' putt. Had to roll it over patches of water soaked areas where snow had recently melted and you name it. Courses will eventually even out a bit but by then brown and dormant so they play easier.

Mid-High 60's this weekend in No. VA, hope the weather stays good for a little while longer, at least until I get to Florida after Christmas.

Not that the weather-guessers have been exactly spot on recently, but they're saying 60s this weekend.

May have to clear the schedule, wake up really stinking early and get some rounds in.

We've had 60's all week. Still not interested in getting out there if it means bouncing balls off cart path hard greens. With nighttime lows being what they are our ground is frozen until spring. I suppose I could play Open Championship style golf and roll everything.

    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
    • I agree with @klineka & @DaveP043 above.  When a new member first joins the club they cold be told that they are not eligible for tournaments until they have an established HCP.  As you said, it only takes a few rounds.  If they do not to post HCP that was their choice and choices have consequences.  If playing in the tournament is important to them then they should step up and establish an HCP.  Maybe they miss the 1st tournament, is that a real big deal?  And if it is a "Big Deal" to them then they had the opportunity to establish the HCP. As for not knowing how to report for HCP I assume your club has a pro and they should be able to assist in getting the scores reported and I suspect out of state courses may also have staff that can assist if asked.
