After much discussion with the family, we've decided it's time to move. The job market here is simply abysmal, yet I see a ton of opportunities in FL. Time to start packing up the house...

Supposed to be quite nice in Denver this weekend.  I'm thinking its time to hit the range!

Yup!  I will a tee time for 18 holes on Saturday!

Finally, the snow has melted.  It should be nice from here on out.  Except maybe a few unexpected snow storms until the end of April.  But generally playable for the most part.

I just hit balls at Wellshire and it was so nice.  Warm enough to golf in shorts and a t-shirt.  What courses do you suggest for this time of year?

I like to play different courses. I like variety. Usually I'll play Fox Hollow, Deer Creek, Riverdale Dunes, or Fossil Trace.

Fossil will open on 2/17 and the other courses are all opened up this past weekend.

I hit a small bucket and practiced some putting/chipping for about 45 minutes and then walked 9 holes on Saturday (about 2h 30 m total). It was 28°F out and the wind was a howling, real feel was in the low teens. I've never seen wind that strong. And I've never played in anything less than about 50F. I really wanted to try out my new (to me) Golf Pad gps app so I bundled up and toughed it out. It was unfortunate how windy it was, I layed up on one of the shorter par 5s (it's tempting to go for it but the green is virtually surrounded by a bunker and water past that, about maybe 270 degrees around) and I had 98 yards to the center, pin back left (thick of the water/sand line), no safe spots. I knew from several shots back that I was coming up wayyy short even when clubing up... so I grabbed my 8i and went for it. I wasn't playing for score that day so if I lost a ball, eh, I didn't care. I hit my 8i wicked flush off a good lie and the ball popped up and I said "ohhh no... that sucker is gone!" Nope, it caught that wind and fell out 15 ft short of the pin, on the green! haha! Never played 3 clubs up with success!

Anyways, I have a cold today (lol, serves me right). I shot a 45 somehow. Almost a hard to believe score for me, but I had been practicing my short (nGIR) chip shots and it apparently proved very fruitful. My problem was driving, I have no idea how to drive the ball with layers on. Most shots I had to take 1/2 to MAYBE 3/4 swings to make a ~200y drive. Not all of them were online either, it was difficult to say the least. Felt like zero compression on the golf ball on all my shots. 43 is my best on these 9 holes, my improved chipping compensated for the poor driving so it washed out I guess. I was happy (except for my cold!)

At least my wife get's to do something she enjoys. She has gone cross country skiing.  I got to work on my back and shoulder muscles, shoveling snow again, lol. Over the hump now, I should get away next month for some practice and maybe a couple of lessons.

Funny about Golf weather, I just spent the weekend in Huntsville, Ontario where on Saturday it was minus 31 Celcius, which I think for you Yanks, that's minus 20 or more.

I'm shining my clubs here in Canada until the 2nd week of April.  :-(

Playing in Williamsburg this weekend, supposed to be 67 on Saturday and 64 on Sunday.  After this quick snow we had, a couple days of really nice weather will be nice.

Playing Fords Colony on Saturday and Kiskiack on Sunday.  Haven't played either.

    • Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.
    • Right. The difference between being 120 out and 70 out for me (this is the important part) is negligible and not worth putting other risks into play off the tee.   Ok the argument against driver is that my shot cone is comically large. It puts every possible outcome into play. You can't see the green from the tee so there's a good chance I'd have to wait for it to clear which would slow down play. That's the third tee right in the middle of the firing range there. I really don't want to wait just to hit a terrible shot and I especially don't want to injure somebody. Yea I have no problem playing out of the rough short of the bunker if I'm just going to lay up short of the bunker, but I absolutely need to avoid flaring it right into the penalty area if I'm going to be laying up in the first place. As a general strategy I understand where you're coming from. But since we're specifically talking about me (this is a shot I'm going to have to hit on Saturday), I think the cost is fairly marginal. I hit the ball 8' closer on average from 50-100 than I do from 100-150 from the fairway and rough and the green success % difference is 4%. Bunker might as well be a penalty drop. Based on the data,  Here's my SG:A data compared to a 10: I honestly don't know how to use SG for decision making. That's why I was mostly looking at proximity to hole and green success rate for comparison. I mostly use SG as a way to track my progress. All good. Like I said, I appreciate the discussion. It makes me think. If I didn't want to see alternative/opposing viewpoints to my own I just wouldn't post anything. You should post it! In your own swing thread, of course. It's been a fun exercise.
    • Played my first 2024 round at Pierce Lake. Boomed my first drive down #10 fairway, then slowly slipped into mediocrity. 83 (69.6/131). The high point was going 2 of 4 on sand saves. My sand game is pretty marginal but today I must have discovered the secret for a couple hours.
    • day 34. Technique practice. Became too quick and outcome oriented. need to slow down and work on technique again.
    • Day 534, April 18, 2024 Practice before lessons today. Priority piece. No sim this time. 🙂
