The article also says "it came after he hit a second ball"… so wouldn't that be his third ball?

I did a bit of web searching and learned that the AM spots for this tourney were simply sold for cash, but could not learn the cost. The highest H'cap i saw was 18, and plenty of those. Some AMs down to 0.

Now the best AMs, lowest scores 3 days prior,  do play on Sunday, contrary to former post which claimed only 3 days for AMs.

And, now here's the stickler, any females in the AM bracket?  Since these spots were for sale and apparently open to anyone who could pay and could meet the H'cap requirement, seems likely that some ladies, many of whom could certainly play as well as old rich guy with 18 H'cap, would be in the field.
Esp since the Pres (former) and probable Pres (to be) are major sponsors.

Well, more web searching.  Had to chuckle a bit to learn the tons of cash over the years have been pumped into the charity works of one of the richest areas of the country due to this tourney.

Finally, what is Gary Player doing at this thing?  Not in either the pro or am field so maybe just a 'hanger-on' for old time's sake.  Oh, maybe 'Health Ambassador' and Humana spokesman.

There is a Pro-Am the first three days, then just the Pro's on Sunday.

Yes it is played on three courses.

And it looks like they've gone to teams of 2.  I believe that when it was a 5-day tourney, the amatueus competed as teams of 4 alongside one pro.  But now I'm watching and I see a standard with 4 names on it, 2 of which are Horschel and Woodland.

I can't imagine how difficult it was in the old style for pros to have to play, basically, alone for 4 days while watching a bunch of hacks slow them down.

Would REALLY like to see some AM player lead the pack on the third day, then told to go home!!

Doesn't really work like that, they don't keep an individual score, just the team score, and the Ams use their handicaps. ;)

EDIT: @joekelly yes they are available to anybody who can afford it (only $29,000!!!) and has a handicap under 18.  Check it out:  http://thesandtrap.com/t/70484/ever-dream-of-playing-in-a-pga-tour-pro-am/0_30

Off topic, but I don't like Gary Player.

Seriously..?  I think he's one of the funniest, and knowledgeable players out there. If I could play a round of golf with ANYONE..it would be Gary.

Interesting leader board as of now..Good to see Ryan Palmer within 3 shots of the lead. Looks like all the " Big Names" have some catching up to do.

    • A bit of background. The Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) runs an annual event known as "Team Play." It is a wildly popular match play competition where Men's Clubs across the region put together teams of 20+ golfers together to compete against other clubs in a 16 vs. 16 match. In any given year, approximately 80-100 clubs will participate. Each club is grouped into "pods" of 4, and will play 6 total matches - one home and one away match against the other 3 clubs. The winning club from each pod advances to the Team Play Playoffs - a single elimination format - until a winner is crowned.  Antelope Valley Country Club just advanced to the championship match for the 3rd consecutive year. They won the championship in both 2022 and 2023.  Based on my review of the match history from the past 3 years (linked below), they have won 21 consecutive team matches. Keep in mind, these are handicapped matches, so this is not just a case where a group of sticks bands together to dominate the poor amateurs other SoCal clubs. Even if these guys are grinders who never quit, play their best under pressure and routinely putt the lights out, the law of averages still say that a streak of that nature is mathematically impossible.  Is there any plausible explanation beyond institutionalized sandbagging throughout the club? • Day 3- Practiced putting for 20 minutes.
    • Interesting that Scottie is #10 on the all time money list and he's been on the PGAT for 4 years. Of course, purses are bigger now, but  neat to look at non-the-less.  The list of top 18 money winners in PGA Tour history has plenty of surprises This list is updated through the 2024 RBC Heritage. To add, Scottie won 4.5 million at the Players, Jack played 44 seasons and won a little of 5 million on course.
