Watching the Sony Open at Waialae Country Club it looks like the margins of the putting greens are painted green. I'm well aware of the necessity for the player to know whether is ball in "on" or "off" of putting green. I've not seen painted putting green edges before. Anyone else?

I just have 1 question...what's a Hawaya..?

It's where old people in the Midwest go for fun. ;-)

I didn't even notice until you pointed that out...good catch. I have played a course this winter that had parts of the fairway painted green, but I'm surprised to see that at a tour event, and in HI no less. Maybe a lot more courses do this and I just haven't noticed.

Should be a good week, this is Adam Scott's first tournament this season without Steve on the bag, one of his surfer buddies is carrying this week.

This started in the Rules folder because I was curious if any other Rules Officials had been called upon to delineate the margins of a putting green with paint. Where I work, we carry four colors, red, yellow and white for the obvious reasons ... and green, which is for our mistakes.

I watched last night and have no idea what you're talking about. I didn't see anything like that. Post a screenshot or something.

This tournament is a visual let down compared to Kapalua last week. Kapalua has stunning views and huge elevation changes where the camera can follow the shot with the entire hole in view.  The Sony is crowded with houses and looks very claustrophobic in comparison.

I also find the tourney a bit blah compared to Kapalua, it just seems so ho hum by comparison. maybe it's just me..?

Im getting tired of hearing jordan spieth say go hard on every shot. Lol

Hahaha for sure. Also tired of the announcers kissing his a$$ after every halfway decent shot.

Benji Weatherly! Awesome pro surfer when he was in his prime. I love when the lines blur slightly between my two favorite things to do!

I thought it was a variation of a greeting :smartass: .

Back to OP, saw Tianlang's name below cut line (actually near the bottom).   Didn't see much of him on TV.   I take it that he hasn't made much progress since last year?

Did the Golf Channel guys announced that Spieth is the next Tiger  ?

The way they talk about Jordan, you would think so. Not to dis J.S., but there are Many talented players out there. What I don't like is when t.v. folks try to cram something, or someone dow our throats, dam commercialism. :yucky:

Rory didn't step up last year so I guess Jordan gets to try on Tiger's shoes this season.

I have to press my TV's mute button sometimes.

(LPGA coverage is far worse.  They try to make players more interesting than they really are.   I don't want to know what a player's favorite past time is.   Just cover the damn sports.)

I thought I was the only one, no disrespect to Jordan Speith, or Harris English, but the early crowning as the next best thing just gets very, very annoying. I just wanna watch golf, I don't care if he surfs, rescues puppies, eats only veggies, just show me golf!!

That's why I would rather watch euro commentary over American commentary any day, any darn time.

    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
