The guys I play with during the week play double par, 6 on a par 3, 8 on a par 4,and 10 on par 5's.(those hurt). They also putt out, no gimmes. We can move it a lil in the fairway, but don't touch it in the rough. The guys I play with on the weekend play triple, and gimmes inside the leather. They play the same as far as roll it in the fairway and play it down in the rough. Most of the other guys at my home course play double bogie golf and gimmes at various distances depending on what the putts for. For example, if its a 4 ftr for bogie, they may say, ''whats that for bogie? Pick it up. The 1st time I played with these guys, I thought no wonder they always shoot low scores. Im not even going to talk about a threesome I once played with that moved it a club length from anywhere, woods, water out of bounds, and a mulligan per 9. Im a go with  the flow kind of guy, and I will play however the group wants to play, but I do hate it when I make the turn with my double par buddies, and a double bogie guy in the clubhouse ask me what I shot on the front, and I have to tell him a 45 or worse.

I play by whatever rules are set if it's a money game. I ain't stupid (hahaha!) If they ask my opinion, which doesn't happen often since it's their game, I tell them let's just play by the rules. If they are playing moving the ball a club length, inside the leather, double bogie max, or OB same as a lateral hazard I simply don't consider that I had a "score" if I used any of those things during the round. If somebody asked me what I shot I would say I don't know because we weren't playing by the rules.

In my normal group, since we only play skins - we pick up at our ESC for the hole (which is 8 for all of us)

The only exception is if all 4 of us are blowing up a hole, then everyone continues until a skin is won or cut.

Of course in tourneys, all strokes are counted.

Always by the rules, at least the ones I am aware. There is no other way to learn. Count them all.

I see no difference whatsoever between "We can move it a lil in the fairway, but don't touch it in the rough" and " I'm not even going to talk about a threesome I once played with that moved it a club length from anywhere, woods, water out of bounds, and a mulligan per 9."

It reminds me of this story about Winston Churchill.

Quote:
“Churchill: "Madam, would you sleep with me for five million pounds?" Socialite: "My goodness, Mr. Churchill... Well, I suppose... we would have to discuss terms, of course... "
Churchill: "Would you sleep with me for five pounds?"
Socialite: "Mr. Churchill, what kind of woman do you think I am?!" Churchill: "Madam, we've already established that. Now we are haggling about the price”

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Most rounds are played by the rules.  I do play some rounds that have a "pick it up" rule or allows lift/clean/place.

In a Stableford competition, we pick-up after the bogey stroke to speed up play.  Those rounds are not posted for handicap purposes.

Certain competitions have a double-par max score.

When I'm playing casual rounds with friends, we will give each other short putts (usually about 12" or less), and I am not above picking up on a hole if I've pumped a couple OB or something.  Lastly, on the rare occasion where I find a "surprise" OB ball or lose one in the open, I'll just drop one in the vicinity and hit 4.

Other than those few exceptions, I play by the rules.

That sounds fun. May try to employ that method.

Ive heard that same exact story, joke, reference, whatever you want to call it, from 3 other guys, used in different, but similar circumstances, and they were all know it all, as$holes, but Im sure your a very nice guy.

We used to play double par, but have moved to net triple bogey. Watching someone make a 10 on a par 5 is very painful. We would rather not.

By the rules. Strange as it sounds since 2013 I have only put up one quad and triples are somewhat rare. I can't remember my exact stats but my double or worse percentage is about the same as birdie. But I can toss out bogeys with ease.

When I first started playing golf, I followed my brother's rule (don't play beyond "double par" score).  Now, I play until I made the putt except when the course is busy.   When it is busy, I use ESC rule and will pick up the ball after I reached my maximum stroke for the hole.

I play them all until it rattles in the cup, why not? I enjoy golf regardless of my final score so there is no harm to me if I have a few triples on the card. Don't get me wrong, I sure prefer a lower score but it doesn't ruin my round by any means. I have lots of buddies that use various versions of, "I maxed out on that hole" but none of them seem to understand that the ESC concept is only for managing handicaps and isn't supposed to be used for bragging rights! I hate losing by a handful of strokes to someone who picks up when they have a bad hole but it's isn't worth the argument so…whatever.
