I was just curious as to how many of you have to endure arctic like winters? I mean below freezing, lots of snow. I live in Niagara Falls, Canada and this winter is the absolute worst winter we've had in the last decade. For the last 10 years we've had very mild winters with little to no snow. This year, it's been an average of -10* to -15* and the snow keeps coming. I never really minded the cold until I became a golfer, now I despise it. I find myself wandering into my garage just to stare at my clubs and day dream of a beautiful day on the course :~( . Thank god for indoor ranges!!!

How many of you guys/girls have to deal with cold weather like this?

I live in Ohio, the State that gets every weather imaginable.

Hurricanes

Blizzards

Wind Storms

Tornadoes
Sub Zero

100+

Floods

Maybe the only thing I haven't seen has been wild fires.

On a side note, looking forward (BIG TIME SARCASM) to the 6-8" of snow in the next 24 hours.

We don't have extreme winters here in Ky, but this winter has been a rough one. Got about 8" of snow yesterday, followed up with a full day of freezing rain/sleet today. Temps are in the 20's this week but we had a couple weeks with temps really close to 0. The thing is, when it starts to warm up it will be 95+ in no time. Seems like we always go from winter to the hottest part of summer with no spring in between. Same with fall... I'll always take the heat over the cold though.

Minneapolis has been unreal this winter. The coldest winter I've ever experienced... as far as I can remember.

That is what I have heard, like it was many winters when I was growing up there.  It has been a bit warmer here in Milwaukee but not by much.

Well here in NC we have some crazy weather. It snowed recently, the day before it snowed it was 60! The week after it snowed it was 60 all week! The most random weather you can imagine..I've lived here my entire 18 years and I still can't get used to the weather here

Yep. We're getting that 6" of snow too. This winter has been a long one so far. Cold and snow since early November and we normally don't get that kind of weather until late December, early January. Argh!!!!!

Quebec City here like Golden.

We are quite lucky this year, only a couple of days under -30 celsius (that's -22 farenheit for those in the US) and about 6 feet of snowfall according the the weather service.

If it continues like that, we should be able to golf in early April, temperatures are quite "hot" for February (-10C / 14F) and there is not much snowfall announced in the next 2 weeks, so with some luck, most snow will melt in late March. I hope so!

OK, I am going to call you on hurricanes @saevel25 !  Maybe the left over parts of a tropical storm, but not a full blow hurricane.  But Ohio weather can have way more temperature swings than Boston.  Winter here can be very variable.  50F then 15F the next day.  This has been a long cold winter.

A couple hours north of OP in Guelph and it's been a pretty nasty winter for sure.  I'm resigned to not getting back on the course again until April.  I'd be incredibly surprised if it was earlier.

A couple of falls ago, we had a hurricane left over come out of the gulf and run into a front coming out of Canada. The result was 70 mph straight line winds that knocked a lot of us (at least in Dayton, OH) off the grid for a couple of weeks. Fortunately it was early September, so the temps weren't bad at all. Gave the backyard grill a good workout.

Needs to be +74 continuous winds and a cyclone to be an called a hurricane.  I'm not saying that the high wind remnants aren't bad.  They may be worse because they produce tornadoes.  Hurricanes usually break down when they make landfall and degrade to tropical depressions very quickly.  The wind remnants can go on for 1000+ miles.

    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
