Right now I am only concerned about push draws or pull fades. Just the two playable standard shot shapes. Unless I really am forced to flight it, then I might consider it, but I rarely deviate from my normal ball flight.

Yea you could go the defined.

Push Draw {High, Normal, Low}

Pull Fade {High, Normal, Low}

I might not keep track of weird shots, like a 40 yard hook around a tree to get the ball back into play, though I might. You need a very large inside out path, so to pull it off would be a confidence boost.

For me its usually something like x or a check mark, or maybe a circle and an x, or a 1 or a zero (go binary). Basically first mark would be path, second would be curve, third would be if it fits what you envisioned. You can hit the path, but over hook it if the face closed down to much. Depends on how detailed you want.

Of course.  If I started something like this I'd choose my own level of detail.  Was just wondering what level of detail you've found that works for you to give you a solid idea of how well you're doing and which parts/types of shots you're succeeding on without having to record excessive detail.

+1.

I've used the app and I like it a lot.  Can keep track of all your shots and can tell you distance to the center of the green which is enough for my needs at the moment.

Have been reading up on just this topic as I want to really start to diagnose my game this year in an effort to play smarter and identify areas to work on. One aspect I definitely want to include (whether as part of an app or on my own) is # of shots within 100 yards since that was a primary nemesis last year.

Will,

I just downloaded the app ... Looks good - I'll give you some feedback once I use it ...

For those of you working with Excel - Do you have a template you can share with me? - I'm too lazy right not to mock one up lol

If you want to go real high tech you could check out this site; http://www.gamegolf.com/products/en-us/gamegolf

I've never tried it, but heard the owner of the company on PGA Tour Radio and the concept sounds pretty cool.  They have a number of pro golfers associated with the product including Jim Furyk, Graeme McDowell and Lee Westwood.  The product launched as an Indiegogo project and they have delivered product to all of the initial supporters and are now selling it to the public.

The product requires placing a small very lightweight sensor in the base of the handle of each club.  Before you take a shot (after practice swings) you tag the sensor against a sensor on your belt and that will register the club as well as the distance your ball traveled from your last ball position.  It will track distance and every club you used for each shot through an app on your smartphone.  You can also share the data so it's possible to compare your round against a friends who tees off hours or days later if they played the same course.

I really like oobgolf.  It can track a crazy amount of stats if you want it to.  I keep it to the basics so that it doesn't take too long to enter.

I think the most important thing is to pick one and stick with it.  I have just about every round of golf I've played over the last 5 or 6 years in their database which lets me see how I've progressed over the years.
