I have played a 3 iron my whole life, i play Titleist 712 MB irons, but i been using my  NIKE SASQUATCH 19* 5 WOOD kinda like a Hybrid by choking down an open the face in rough when i need a distance. So when should i know its time to get rid of 3 iron an move on to a Hybrid.

I don't see the point in carrying a 3 iron anymore with all these great new hybrids out. They fly as long as a 3 iron and land softly. The tour shaped versions are easy to control and lower spinning. The only thing a hybrid can't do that a 3 iron can is a stinger. If you like hitting a stinger, keep the 3 iron. Otherwise, switching to a hybrid is an ideal choice.

I had an RBZ 19 degree hybrid that I just couldn't hit.  I have made some swing changes since then so maybe Id be better with it now but I had a problem with hitting huge pulls or big push slices.  I ended up buying a 18 degree callaway prototype hybrid iron that I like a lot(even though with my swing changes I can't really get it up in the air I think that I have the wrong shaft in it though).  I would go hit a few or maybe see if you can find a cheap used one on ebay and give it a try.  I hit my hybrid decent at the store but on the course I really struggled.

I personally think hybrids are the way to go. Or buy an AP1 iron near the same loft. It's more game improvement and easier to hit. Just another option going towards a high launch game improvement long iron.

I like my 3 iron but a hybrid of comparable distance would work well too. I advise against that titleist driving iron though, I hit it at a demo and the driving iron really didn't do much for me in terms of forgiveness or feel. I had no trouble with the 714MBs or the Mizuno MP4s so I hit the ball okay today, but my 3 iron I play now is more forgiving and better off the deck than the driving iron, and my hybrid at 17˚ does just about everything in terms of trajectory that I need.

If I were playing blades I probably wouldn't carry a matching 3 or 4 iron, I'd either get a CB or go with a hybrid. If the 3 iron is where you start to struggle, replace it. I don't have trouble generating height and distance with those clubs so I just replace my woods rather than irons for more consistency from long range.

I have a mental block for hybrid clubs, I just cant seem to hit them...I love my 3-4 irons and hit them quite a bit off the tee. I recently decided to see if I could find a driving iron to get a bit more distance and control off the tee when the driver isnt in use. I tried just about everything but simply could not find that feel I was looking for. Several days ago I stumbled onto an Adams DHY driving iron in a 21 degree. The club is a mix of driving iron and a hybrid but really sets up and swings like a long iron. I instantly loved the club and have ordered both the 21 and 24 degree clubs....Might be worth checking out

If you have high clubhead speed and can get the 3i up OK, it might work for you. Especially if you like it as a driving iron. And, 3i works better if you set has flighted shafts (a little extra launch boost on longer irons).

Several stronger players I know use 3W, 5W, 3i.

As far as hybrids go, not all are created equal. You just have to find the right model for you.

Some brands of hybrids I'm all over the place, which soured me on Hs in the early going. But eventually I found models I hit quite well, such as Callaway Diablo Edge and XHot, Tour Edge XRail, Wilson D5 and Adams V4 (which I carry).

Being you're a 4 HDCP, you might have some hybrid days and some 3i days - swap as needed for tactics of the course and weather.

I carry a 15* 3 wood, a 19* hybrid, and a 21* 3i. I love my hybrid and it is a "go-to" club for me but it is hard for me to flight down, which is not an issue with my 3i. If the conditions are windy or I need to really work a shot (not very often) I find myself reaching for the 3i, otherwise, I will hit my hybrid. Honestly, I may end up taking my 3i out of the bag in favor of another wedge.

Don't normally plug specific brands/models, but for that slot in the bag I really like the original Nike VRS 21 degree.  Seems to have a following and it still shows up in a lot of pros bags, even those who use the Covert in the rest of the woods.  After that, the Adams A3 19 degree is another favorite.  Tried dozens of others, and aside from those two I would agree on sticking with the 5 wood (I also found the RBZ hybrid with the stock shaft a little tough to handle).  The good thing is the VRS and the A3 are both dirt cheap and perform as well as anything.

I still wish they made a hybrid down in the strong 3 wood loft. With how easy they get in the air, I would like a 42" 14 degree hybrid. That would be awesome!!!

I have a Nickent 4DX 15 degree hybrid - not sure I've ever seen one stronger than that ...

I had the A3 16-degree for awhile.  In that series the lower lofts had progressively thinner faces so the 2hy sounded like a gun at impact and with the stock Prolaunch red it was as long as any normal 3-wood.  I just couldn't hit it as consistently as a proper 3-wood for some reason.  Maybe I should have stuck with it.  Darn it, now you're going to make me go out and try to find another one like it!

TM has 2H at 16.5* in original RBZ Tour, and both RBZ.Stage2 Tour and Stage 2 Tour TP.

Also, 2H at 17* in both SLDR Rescue and SLDR Rescue TP, and JetSpeed Rescue.

Most companies only offer a 2H in their Tour or Pro models.

    • On my car I got the extended power train warranty. I do read the fine print most of the time. Though at now 37, my eyes aren’t what they were 10 years ago.    The problem with most of these extended warranties on electronics and appliances is you don’t register the warranty with the place you buy the warranty from, which I’ve always found strange. Unless it’s GameStop then you know Alina drops her Switch in the next two years and the screen cracks they’ll replace it. No questions asked.    You buy a slow cooker at Walmart for $50 and the extended warranty is say $6, you have to go through a third party to register your product for the warranty, and it’s pretty damn annoying. Target is the same way. Anything you buy the extended protection on you have to go through a third party.    Why do retailers go through a “broker” for warranties? Because they don’t wanna deal with it? They make me talk to someone from another country, that I can barely understand, when I need my warranty fulfilled.   Sorry for the rant.
    • You may be able to find a regular flex Blueboard on the second hand market. I’m little more than half your age so I swing a shaft that launches pretty low so I don’t have a lot of experience with Regular flex (other than when I try to hit it I miss way to the left).    There are other shafts, such as the newer Ping Alta that I’ve heard good things about. And one that no one talks about. The Jupiter shaft. You can get this shaft for a $100 with a grip and your Ping adapter installed. I was talking to the golf manager at Dick’s Sporting Goods here and he has one in his driver and has nothing but good things to say about it. I thought about getting one for my Paradym Triple Diamond to play it a little shorter, but haven’t pulled the trigger yet.

    • Meanwhile, another old Tour Edge guy switches to Callaway for this season. I have a different problem, course dependent set-ups. What I’m wondering is if @dragonsmhas the 8 iron set 5-PW, AW, GW or just 5-PW, GW. Because the PW is 42°, AW 47°, and GW 52°. Because that could potentially be a gap there. The 5-iron to 6-iron length jump is 5/8” instead of 1/2” so you should be careful of that.    @WUTiger the problem most people have with 3-woods is they don’t play them far enough back into their stance. And they usually don’t have enough loft and the shaft is too long. So 3HL, 4 or 5-wood is probably better for most golfers. I do the “Frankenwood” approach. I have both the 3+ and 5 woods. I typically will either add two degrees to the 3+ on 6600 yards or longer courses, or take a degree off the 5-wood on shorter courses than 6300 or so, and use the 5-wood shaft for both. I don’t usually find a situation where I need both the 3 and 5 wood on a course. I don’t play from 7000 yards it’s no fun. Edit: I mostly agree with @WUTiger on the gapping, although a lot of the newer even fixed hosel fairway woods are made better than what we had when we were playing the old Exotics XRails.
