Congrats.  Breaking 80 is a huge milestone.  One many of us might not reach in a lifetime.  Not to highjack your thread, but here's two quick ones about coming close:

Played and 18 hole round that included 16 pars and two QUAD bogies for an even 80!

Playing with some friends a couple seasons ago.  Upon reaching the 12th tee, a really difficult par-3, my buddy says, "Damn, Dave, do you know you're 1 under right now?"  That was all she wrote.  Nothing but ugly followed and finished with an 83.

Who knows.  Maybe I'll catch lightening in a bottle for an entire round and shoot 77-79.  Would be nice to break 80 ONCE!!!

Cheers on your good round, mate.

Well, 11 months into this great ride, I finally broke into the 80's!!!! However it is a little bitter sweet, due to a significant melt down on the last three holes. I had a 65 with three left!!!! Great drive off tee at 16, left my approach a little short into a deeeeep greenside bunker. I am usually pretty decent in the sand, but it took me 4 to get out. Two putt for an 8. 17, I hook left out of bounds, bounce all around this hole for another 8...aaarrrgh!!! Par 5 18 into the water off the tee, couple of crappy iron shots and two putt for a 7. Total score 88.

Here are the highlights.

3 over 39 on the front 9

125 out PW hole out for Eagle on 9. Couldn't see it go in because of a two level green. buddies played it off like I went past into the water. after milling around a little, I found it...in the cup!!!!

14 Fairways or GIR

34 putts (last week 43)

So, there you are...big choke down the stretch, but I am still super excited to finally reach this goal!!!

Joe

Congrats Joe! You will forget the last three holes but you will remember the hole out from 125 forever.

Sorry for the confusion on the GIR. I was referring to fairways off the tee for a par 4/5 and hitting the green on par 3's. Hope that clears it up.

Right haha, that's very different to 14 GIR but still a very good accomplishment. You must have been on fire with your driver!

    • I think I like this hole.  It is a clear "Risk-Reward" choice.  Since most of the shots in your cone cleared the bunkers I would say they are a minor risk and not a big issue.  Playing the aggressive line may give you 70ish yards in from what looks to be playable rough while conservative play is 120ish from fairway.  I know you said 70 vs 120 is minor for you but how does the approach angle in impact your results?  I figure both strategies are playing for Birdie since holing out from either is mostly luck. Looking at your proximity hole I think it says @ 50 feet when hitting from the fairway from 100-150 and 40 feet if hitting 50-100 from the rough.  Neither of those is an easy birdie putt.   I like the approach angle from the rough between the bunkers & the adjacent tees over the angle from @ 120 in the fairway but I really do not like the idea of hitting onto the adjacent tee boxes and that may impact my confidence with making the shot.  Also, too far left may be a worse approach angle then from the fairway short of the bunkers. For me this may come down to how confident do I feel when I reach that tee box.  If I am stroking it well off the tee leading up to the hole I would try for over the bunkers and the better angle in but if I am struggling that day I would likely opt for the fairway to take more bad stuff out of play.
